Maradona made his entire rep on WC 1986 (which they beat England by cheating, i.e. "hand of god". Worse than Henry vs Ireland). He couldn't sniff Platini's boots while they were rivals... Platini retired in 1987.
And this whole "he carried Argentina NT and Napoli"argument is ridiculous. Argentina was supremely talented and had already won the WC in 1978 without him.
Very good and the best dribbler i ever saw. But as far as a footballer, i rate 6-7 players easily ahead of him.
I spent a lot of my school break watching World Cups and Pele's Santos matches and the guy was literally a monster on the field at everything:creating, dribbling, scoring, strength,he was like combining Messi and CR...Definitely #1 for me even if i didnt get to watch Zico,Platini,Cruyff etc
you can say that about don stefano too, he played almost all positions and pele himself said he was the greatest footballer he has seen.
just becouse he never had success in the WC he doesn't get the same recognisition

Kaka is not a top 100 material at all..even if you argue with villa and etoo there are other players who will easily replace them like batistuta and bergkamp etccc
haha i was just mocking huntsmans "kaka will bring success to madrid, greatest playa!!!1"

thats the thing, you also have to look at the legacy these players left. Most of them were gods on the fieldomarish wrote:Ganso wrote:i have been saying this for a while...sportsczy wrote:Ganso wrote:I honestly never understood why people always rate pele as #2 and handy/druggy as #1....

Re: All Time Best Player list
Messi-believe it or not he is by far better than maldini, dhinho etc etc
Xavi: 2008 onwards is how we make legends is it?..well his achievements says so and his influence on those teams
There's so much more:
Should be higher:
DInho-3 year peaked, internationaly hasnt done much still in top 40
Ronaldo-still in top20
Henry-internationald flop ,placed correctly
Maldini-on a defensive point of view he is rated fine.
Baggio -I agree he should have rated more but again will be out of top 40
well no list is fair but look at the bright side lol

If you have personal issues with kaka then that's something else but no one in his own mind would label kaka a flop; he's up there with the best.

Anything below top 10 for baggio is a crime. He's a top 5 and if it werent for his injury he would be 1.

Re: All Time Best Player list
You have to rate players relative to their time period. Pele was like Michael Jordan... he was just a freak athlete that was light years ahead of the rest. The moves, athleticism, etc. he exhibited then would still make him a WC player today. All the other players could be stopped one way or another... but there was no answer for Pele. He was that kind of difference maker. I never saw him play at his prime; but that's how my father described him and he was lucky enough to have seen him at Santos 3 times.
I can't think of any other field player that was so dominant in relation to his peers. Only Yashin as a goaltender.

Name me ten players who can do half of what baggio did in both of those vids.
And show their vids as evidence. 65? What a joke.

How on earth is Platini ahead of Zidane?
I saw both play and Platini was much better than Zidane, although i love Zidane too. If you look at the all-time rankings of the top football magazines, they'll have Platini in the top 5 mostly and definitely top 10.
You do realize that, as a CAM, he led Serie A in scoring for 3 straight years and had 3 straight ballon d'or awards. In 13 full seasons as a pro, he scored 30+ goals 8 times (6 in a row with 3 of them at Juve)... and he had 29 twice. And he was more known for playmaking and assists than goals lol. Just to put that in perspective, his rival was Maradona and Maradona only scored over 20 goals twice in Europe with a high of 23.
You guys just don't know how good he was.
Sports, I agree but it's a waste of time trying to explain to all these youngsters how good our heros from the past were. Most of these guys have only been watching futbol for 5 or so years and watch it on TV or Internet. The only things they know about the past is what they read. As we can see from the various posts most are very opinionated and set in their opinions. There are some very knowledgeable exceptions however unforunately that is not the norm.
I know Bill. There are so many great players omitted... i just don't know what to say. For example, nobody mentions Rummenigge... but he was just a beast. Best player in Europe in the early 80s.
These lists are all about the short term. None of these journalists can truly compare because they never saw the old timers play. If I was making such a list, i'd get a panel of people together that span several generations and then combine the results to see how things fall.

2008 spain was no where near close to barca style and it was a direct attacking team with mixture of players from alot of clubs
Casillas was easily top 4 performers for spain in WC and best GK in WC and Euro hands down
Not to say you have never watched him prior to your jump from inter milan to madrid
Every one placing casillas in top 4 while poor khan

Well, what a dickish thing to say. I've been watching football from the mid 90's. Missed out on the 80's(bummer!) but for the umpteenth time, everything from the 70's on is very well documented. Watched enough of Maradona, enough of Platini and pretty much all of Zidane. 98 world cup was one of the most enthralling experiences of my life, the definitive highlight for French football. Zidane's historic performance in there alone places him higher than Platini (and the list concurs).
And yes it is opinionated. That's the nature of football.

Re: All Time Best Player list
Seppuku... Platini led France into its first major international competition (Euro or WC) in 16 years in 1978. That's right; France NT was dismal. On par with the worse European NTs of the period. Then, he led them to 2 straight semi finals (82 and 86). It was a feat that i can't even explain.
The success of those 80s teams inspired kids and the whole generation of great footballers that came in the mid 90s was due to the influence of Platini in the late 70s and 80s. To the FFF's credit, they were able to create the youth academies and the programs to take advantage of the unprecedented surge in football popularity in France. He was the first international french football star since Kopa.
But let's be clear... the only reason French football took such a leap up in the international arena was the France NT of Platini. His influence was absolutely enormous. First podium ever at a WC (3rd place) and trophy (84 euro).

Re: All Time Best Player list
List is very subjective IMO. However there is no way to make an objective list that would be accurate either.
Football is not baseball or basket ball where stats show you who is good and who isn't. There is no real way to quantify a player's first touch or vision.
Everyone's list will be different but that's what makes this game special.
Pele is number 1 for sure though

Maradona was the most talented footballer to ever live. His short peak was the highest any footballer has ever reached.
That being said he should be 3rd/4th if you truly take into account every factor possible like they were suppodsed to.......

1) Platini was a monster, some saying that at least for France he was better than Zidane isn't a ridiculous statement.
2) If Messi was Mexican he would have done f*ck all at National team level, hell that goes for almost anyone on that list. Hugol should be on there and he should be super high.
3) Zico and Revillino should be higher IMO.
4) Pele is number 1 no contest. Di Stefano, Maradona and Cruyff are undisputed top 4 (God tier).
