A Ball Playing Spanish CB
I'd like to know from Real Madrid posters whether there's a quality up and coming Spanish CB who could pass well. I refer specially to Adit and senor bill

Re: A Ball Playing Spanish CB
With Carvalho's decline, we need another ball playing CB in his stead. Mou plays him for this sole reason even if he is past it

Jordi Amat.
Or Derik in Castilla but he's still only potential IMO.

You really think that is Mou's only reason for playing Carvalho.

He's pretty decent on the ball I would say. He's not Mats Hummels but I think he can be very good in the future.

That is the only reason dude... Our system uses a ball playing CB so we can't just screw that and put a defense minded. That's why Varane never plays with Pepe, only with Carvalho so far etc.

Re: A Ball Playing Spanish CB
Pepe is a better ball player than Carvalho, in fact when they play together its Pepe's job to go forward and Carvalho's to stay back and cover Marcelo

Re: A Ball Playing Spanish CB
Well pepe is better on the ball than carvalho but he is too nervous to play with the ball while carvalho is calm and composed.Whats the point of being better on the ball if you are too nervous and lacks confident?
As for players,Botia is the best young CB spain have with out a doubt but he is not ball playing plus he is a Barca product.
Sandro of villarreal (a Tall and Physical DM with great technical skills) often appeared as CB and he was great there.
Also Javi Martinez, who is called as next XAbi alonso (a DM with great passing skills) started lot of matches for Bilbao as CB who under bielsa is trying to play possession football.

Re: A Ball Playing Spanish CB
Nick, I can think of 3; Botia (Sporting), Dominquez (Atlectico), and Barata (Barcelona B).
Amat (Espanyol) has previously been mentioned. These 4 are the starting CB's for the youth teams. The first 2 on the U21 euro champs (now the Olympic team) and the other 2 on the U20 team. I think Barata has the biggest upside, he was the captain and handled the ball a lot (and well). I'm actually hoping 2 of these guys get on NT team soon as there also is a need there (for next WC) for CBs. The issue for Madrid is 3 of these guys will not be available for Madrid (Botia is a Barca product). If I had to chose I would go after Botia, but it's unlikely. I haven't noticed Amat a lot to have aa strong opinion. As Adit said Javi Martinez has played a few games recently. Not only for Athlectic but also for NT. But that's in emergencies, his true position is MF. I don't think Athletic would sell him and even if they did his value is extremely high now. He is established on the NT team and the captain on the Olympic team.
However ,as much of a fan as I am for S.Ramos at RB, I think the time is coming for him to make the permanent move to CB. I suspect after the Euro, he will become Puyol's replacement so what better timing for his club play. So I think we are set at CB. Varane was the move you were looking for last summer and with Albiol finally showing some decent performances, we have 4 CB's. What we will need is another RB.

Re: A Ball Playing Spanish CB
You mean Bartra Bill?
If so i wouldnt expect too much from him, he's very poor defensively as it stands and has a huge issue position wise so much so he's best way of succeeding is being a RB or DM fulltime which means he really has no future at Barca......
He is young so it could change but atm i dont have high hopes for him......

Re: A Ball Playing Spanish CB
For RB im really confident that Dani Carvajal has great potential,he is already great on the ball as a seasoned veteran. He isnt ready to start big matches but he is more than enough for la liga lower division teams.Hoping to see him against Poneffedria.
Re: A Ball Playing Spanish CB
ball playing cb are super overrated.
You cb's need to be Cb's, not playmakers lol.

Re: A Ball Playing Spanish CB
I dont have enough time for an essay so i will make it simple.
If you want your team to play as a "Team" and not as a collection of Forwars, midfielders and defenders then you do need Ball playing CBs..

Yeh, sorry I misspelled. You have obviously have seen him more than I have. I saw him with the U20 team and he was great. I don't watch Barca B so I don't know how he does there but I was assuming they might want to promote him in a year or two to the senior club as Puyol winds down. They really only have Fontas as a true Cb back-up and thus far Pep hasn't shown any confidence in him (altho to be fair he has just been promoted and the Cb replacements Masc. Busquets and Albial have done well)

He's awfully young for a promotion to 1st team. I would think another year either at Castilla or somewhere in 2a if they don't amke it or perhaps a team like Getafe. But you are right, it will be nice to have a cantera promoted. It would be as back-up as Arbeloa will get starting position if Ramos moves.

Re: A Ball Playing Spanish CB
lol, i am not saying that its a bad thing to have a ball playing cb.
Its not, as long as he is Super CB, its incridible to have him.
But let me tell u a thing, let say i give 10000 points to defender quality.
There is a defender who has 90000 with ball playing skills and there is a defender with 91000 without that skills, but he is ok passer like pepe for example.
I would choose the latter one everytime.
Having good ball playing skills should never come in to consederation when choosing a CB.
Unless u play for barcelona.

Re: A Ball Playing Spanish CB
Yes it does, and ffs, barcelona did not invent ball playing CBs.
football is evolving, and more and more managers are grasping how important it is to have a good passer from the back.
Almost every top team has a ball playing CBs, and they show how efficient they are by moving forward, joining up the attack, being the extra man, providing long quality balls forward, and passing safely out of the back to guarantee good counter. They also guarantee better ball circulation and better possession as you are not afraid to pass back to your CB to relieve the pressure off the midfield.
