They shouldn't be ignored, because it's still better than goals only, goals + "narrow" assists only. Sure you could extend involvement even further, but I don't have data on it.

We might need league difficulty adjusted stats tbh. In Maradona's time Serie A was the best league in the word, not the current Serie Z. Playing against Maldini, Baresi, Costacurta and Tassotti is probably different than playing against the likes of Chiellini and Barzagli.

There's a big difference in how Maradona carries his teams compared to Higuain.

Maradona is a much safer player to pass. He's more technical and harder to steal the ball from. It's similair to how Messi somewhat carries Barcelona in possession, he is their safest player to pass. He can keep the ball on his feet anywhere on the pitch.

Higuain isn't even half the player. That's just the technical part of Maradona's game. Maradona does everything better than Higauin. Troll thread should be moved to the stats thread. If your point is that Messi is better than Maradona then you're right. He is. You don't need to prove it anywhere but on the pitch tho.

napoli won a scudetto when serie a was at its apex....platini matthaus brehme voeller klinsmann van basten rijkaard zico gullit and many more greats played in the league in the 80s at milan juve roma inter sampdoria etc... the league is almost the opposite of what it was back then, its at its worst phase technically, financially, and tactically. its unappealing to top athletes....that reason alone is enough to thwart this comparison. higuain's still an amazing player btw. with all due respect, either stick to the messi appreciation/ world cup "most assists to the guy that assisted the assist of the goal" thread, or look for more subtle/smarter ways to address your messi fetish...the agenda behind this, is painfully obvious. change your style

1. Napoli was the biggest spending team in Europe at the time.
2. Relative spending and league position was exactly the same as ManC of today.
3. Maradona wasn't then even ranked the best Napoli player 86-87 in Serie A.

changes nothing. even if they spent a gazillion pounds, there wasn't a gap between the teams financially and the talent was there at the top sides....i'd take someone battling the likes of matthaus costacurta than any of the scrub dms/ defenders that grace that league today...difference between "can't spend" and "won't spend"...and btw that city comparison is rubbish. don't bother posting your stats or cuts from magazines, i've heard that tune before on a bunch of your "player x isn't as great, so let's by default crown messi" threads....what's next? a "pele played against mechanics" thread? save it, stick to your giffs, and the assists to the guy who assisted the assist thread; that's actually very good for comic relief and humor on this forum
