He was never elite nor have the potential to be.

A centerpiece for Real Madrid, Germany and now Arsenal, consistently among or leading the world's most creative players and always the reference point when someone starts creating chances and needs to be compared to someone but, yeah, the guy is not 'elite'.

Özil has been just as creative as Firmino this season. His assist numbers are off because he's created 30 chances and had just one converted. That's not his fault. Assists aren't the thing to analyze when considering creativity. Sure, they're the end product but when a playmaker's teammate wastes a chance, that doesn't make the playmaker less creative.

Firmino is a great player who's only improving but Özil has pedigree, he's been doing this at a higher level for much longer. I don't get why anyone who plays a few months of great football is suddenly on or above Özil's level. People just love to hate.

Look at his numbers this season, his creativity dropped off a bit compared to last season but that is because his role changed. He's basically playing as a second striker. He occupies different spaces and makes runs where he used to be blocked by Giroud ahead of him. It shows in the numbers. 7 goals and 4 assists all comps.

But if you're all obsessed with numbers, Zidane won the Ballon d'Or in a year where he scored like 10 goals in the calendar year.

Don't think it's much of a stretch to say he's not been at his best this season so far. Most of his goals came against Ludogorets, while creatively his numbers have noticeably dropped (not just assists, but chances created as well).

The tweak in the system and his role, and the constantly changing midfield behind him contribute to this. His influence decreases when he has a crap midfield behind him who can't control a game since he doesn't get the ball in dangerous areas enough. His general play as well hasn't been as good as it was this time last season, although there were signs against Bournemouth he was getting better.

What Jay said, I completely forgot to mention the fact that he's been playing with a disjointed and constantly changing midfield all season, not to mention a front three that is prone to chopping and changing itself.

That's not an excuse, he has dropped off creatively slightly, but that can be explained by the role change anyway.

All beside the point, if you don't consider him elite, ignore these last three posts, you're too far gone.

I don't know why people are acting like Firmino is only now becoming a great player. He was one of the best players in the Bundesliga before Liverpool bought him, and he's well on his way to being the best player in the PL, and is already one of the top players.

Saying he's as good or better than Ozil isn't a slight against Ozil. Firmino's creativity is top notch, but he also brings a ton more off the ball than most players in the league (not just in pressing and defensive effort, but his movement is out of this world). He's also a pretty solid goal scorer and can play multiple positions very well.

Yes. A playing well implies B is shit. The two can't possibly have different roles/context/systems/managers/etc.

Also, apples are the same as oranges. If you don't believe that, then either you are dumb or you are a hater.

Özil has created almost the exact same amount of chances per game, averages better passing %, has most passes in final third in the PL (Firmino is nowhere near him there), averages more key passes per game.

And in case you want to bring up Firmino's amazing past achievements of a good two seasons at Hoffenheim and 13 caps for Brazil, look at Firmino's numbers last season. This isn't a new phenomenon. He's improved, Özil's role has changed.

Like I said, he's a good player and he's improved and will continue to do so but I can't take people seriously when a player hits a purple patch and it's >>> Özil

Using Firmino's season last year as some kind of comparison to Ozil's best season in the PL is misleading at best. Again, Firmino isn't hitting some purple patch. He was adjusting to a new team, playing in two different systems (or more really) without a defined role, and battled through injury last season. Not to mention he's only 25 so of course he's going to keep improving.

That said, like I said before, comparing Ozil to Firmino is not a slight against Ozil. Firmino is a genuinely top class player just like Ozil is. People downplay Ozil a lot (I don't think I ever have) but he's a very good offensive player. That said Firmino's off the ball work just brings more to the table IMO while also being just as effective offensively which pushes him over Ozil for me but everyone has their preferences and as Sri said there are many roles and different systems to play in that can have an effect on how a player performs or is perceived.
