Referee blacklist Empty Referee blacklist

Post by Forza Fri Apr 06, 2012 11:22 am

How many referees can we name that are notoriously awful?

Criteria:
- They have to have done more than one crap performance
OR
... one really, really shocking high-profile craptacular performance.

- Note: 1 bad decision in 1 game does not make a bad referee.

- You have to name the game(s) that they officiated, their nationality and their other profession (if they have one).

- Rank the referees if you like, 1 being the worst.

-------------------------

E.g.

1. Tom Henning Øvrebø (Norway, Psychologist)
- Euro 2008: Italy v Romania (Toni goal incorrectly ruled offside (the assistant flagged it, but Øvrebø ignored him), penalty unfairly awarded to Romania, yellow card awarded to De Rossi)
- UCL 08-09: Chelsea v Barcelona (Chelsea had 4 penalty claims turned down, Abidal red carded for a tackle on Anelka even though there was no contact)
- UCL 09-10: Bayern v Fiorentina (Gobbi sent off, Klose not getting sent off and the most blatant offside anyone will ever see in their lives not called)
- 2010 WC Qualification: Greece v Latvia: Contentious penalty awarded to Greece early in 2nd half.

I nominate Alfonso Pérez Burrull, Fernando Teixeira Vitienes, Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez and last but not least Jose Luis Paradas Romero.

Thousands of fouls, hundreds of yellow cards, tons of red cards and lets not forget all the penalties given

I think it would be easier to make a list of the good referees. Since notoriously awful referees are rather common nowadays.

4 penalties? Laughing

I sincerely hope you are not including the dives by drogba and malouda, or the unintentional handball by eto'o?

Is it only me or actually several of these controversial referees have favored barcelona in UEFA competitions?

They are already a really good team, why UEFA continues giving them a hand anytime they need it?

Byron Moreno (Ecuador, criminal) wins this by a landslide

Moreno was arrested on September 21, 2010 at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, while trying to smuggle in six kilograms (over ten pounds) of heroin, which was hidden in his underwear.[9] In January 2011, he pled guilty to the charges in a New York courthouse, facing a possible ten years in prison.[10] On September 23, 2011 Moreno was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison on the heroin smuggling charges.[11]

Busacca is actually a really good referee. If the guy wasn't good he wouldn't be head of referees at FIFA.The only mistakes I've ever seen him make were the RVP incident and a mistake in the 2006 world cup but the match was already 2-0.

Moreno and Tagliavento deserve to be up there.

I'd also like to nominate Graham Poll for an absolute disaster of a game in the 2006 World Cup between Australia and Croatia.

Among other things in that game, a player was yellow carded 3 times and stayed on the field and a goal was scored only for it to be disallowed on the grounds that the ref had apparently blown for full time in the seconds before it was scored. I don't know of any other bad games this ref has done, but this one is dreadful enough to earn him a place here on its own.

Read more about the game here...

IIRC Poll was actually one of the best ref in EPL back then, and is probably one of the better ones overall if you overlook that 1 horrible match (and a couple of controversies) =/.

EDIT:

After a couple of google, it would seem that he's really not that good of a ref... Razz

Not in order yet and not completed, but this is what we have come up with so far...

1. Tom Henning Øvrebø (Norway, Psychologist) Status: RETIRED from internationals, still AT LARGE in Norway

2. Byron Moreno (Ecuador, Drug Smuggler) Status: RETIRED & IMPRISONED
- 2002 WC: Italy v Sth Korea (penalty to Sth Korea, golden goal ruled offside, 2nd yellow to Totti for an alleged dive)
- Ecuadorian Serie A: Liga de Quito v Barcelona Sporting Club [from Guayaquil] (Quito trailing 3-2 at end of game, Moreno signalled 6mins of stoppage time, he subsequently allowed play to run for 13 mins, Quito scored on the 99th and again on the 101st to win the game, Moreno then falsified the minutes in which they scored in the match report.
- Ecuadorian Serie A: Deportivo Cuenca v Deportivo Quito (sent off three players from the visiting team)

3. Alfonso Pérez Burrull (Spain, Sales Representative) Status: AT LARGE internationally and in Spain
- 09-10 Copa Del Rey: Barcelona v Sevilla (Diego Capel goal erroneously ruled out, Bojan Krkic goal erroneously ruled out, Doubtful penalty on Diego Capel)
FILE INCOMPLETE

4. Fernando Teixeira Vitienes (Spain, ???) Status: ???
FILE INCOMPLETE

5. Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez (Spain, Prosthodontist) Status: RETIRED
- Euro 2012 Qualification: R. of Ireland v Armenia (sent of Armenian GK for a handball (he was outside the box), replays showed that it clearly hit his chest)
FILE INCOMPLETE

6. Jose Luis Paradas Romero (Spain, ???) Status: ???
FILE INCOMPLETE

7. Paolo Tagliavento (Italy, Hairdresser) Status: AT LARGE internationally and in Italy
- 11-12 Serie A: Milan v Juventus (Muntari header ruled out when it clearly crossed the line, Mexes punch to Borriello in the ribs goes unnoticed, Vidal brings down Robinho on the edge of the box without FK or penalty, Matri's goal ruled out offside)
FILE INCOMPLETE

8. Graham Poll (England, Television pundit and newspaper columnist) Status: RETIRED
- 2000 EPL: Everton v Liverpool: Liverpool GK kicked the ball into the back of an Everton player's back and the ball bounced off it and into the goals > goal ruled out on the grounds that Poll had blown for full time > video replays showed that this was incorrect.
- 02 WC: Italy v Croatia (waved play on when a Croatian player went down injured and told him to stand up > eventually stopped play because the player had a bloodied nose, Vieri goal called offside, Italy goal disallowed for shirt-pulling after a long-range FK was scored, called 42 fouls during that game)
- 03 FA Cup SF: Arsenal v Sheffield United: (Sheffield player collided with Poll which prevented him from tracking back to cover Ljungberg who scored off that play)
- 2004 EPL: Arsenal v Chelsea (allowed a goal taken from a quick Henry FF despite the fact that he hadn't blown his whistle and that he was still standing near the ball)
- 06 WC: Australia v Croatia (a player was yellow carded 3 times and stayed on the field, a goal was scored only for it to be disallowed on the grounds that the ref had apparently blown for full time in the seconds before it was scored)

9. Howard Webb (England, Former police sergeant) Status: AT LARGE internationally and in England

10. Riley

11. Wiley

12. Clattenburg

13. Dean

14. Dowd

15. Atkinson

17. Friend

18. Mason

19. Halsey

20. Probert
