Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill has been ruled out of England's World Cup qualifier against San Marino, with Newcastle defender Steven Taylor called up as cover.

Fantastic news. Shame he's only "a cover" for the other poorer defenders.

The Three Lions - Page 3 Empty Re: The Three Lions

Post by Jay29 Thu May 16, 2013 10:19 am

It looks like we're playing 4-4-2 in these upcoming games, judging from the number of the strikers he's called up and the fact he's only called up three central midfielders.

I'm happy that McCarthy has been called up, since he actually deserves it after some of his recent performances. It's a shame Gibbs hasn't been included but it was always going to be difficult for him to get in ahead of Cole and Baines. I'm not sure about Carroll getting a call-up when Lambert has deserved one for quite some time.

Otherwise, it's about what you expect, given what we have available right now. Purely on form, I'd play this:

McCarthy

Johnson - Cahill - Jagielka - Baines

Walcott - Carrick - Lampard - Milner

Rooney - Sturridge

We could also play:

McCarthy

Johnson - Cahill - Jagielka - Baines

Jones - Carrick

Walcott - Lampard - Sturridge

Rooney

I have no idea why Welbeck was called up. Strange selection.

With the form Sturridge is in, we should play him for sure. If Milner starts on the wing

The Three Lions - Page 3 Empty England's best midfielder

Post by Gemini Tue Aug 13, 2013 10:29 am

Why has Carrick only ever been a bit part player for England? For a nation that lacks midfield creativity, organisation and passing ability, Carrick surely was the cure...
With managers favouring the likes of scott parker & gareth barry over him in tournaments, one can only wonder why?

Consider England's average midfield and carricks quality, is it not ridiculous that a 21 year old in Neymar has 10 more national caps then a 32 year old carrick?

When I look at spain whom is the example to follow, they have Busquets and Xabi Alonso.
Both are quite comparable to Carrick which is unusual as they aren't comparable amongst themselves but I won't go into why Carrick is good and what he brings to the table just that he is a blend between Busquets & Alonso.

Don't get me wrong, Busquets is carrick's superior but in a role what carrick has perfected for united and England's omission of the midfielder leads me to think what if England had Busquets & Alonso would they be left out too?
