Vierchowod: Juventus' Giorgio Chiellini Is Better As A Left-Back

Pietro Vierchowod believes Juventus coach Antonio Conte made the right choice by moving Giorgio Chiellini from centre-back to left-back in the Turin giants' 2-0 Serie A win over AC Milan last Sunday.


The former Juventus centre-back, who played into his 40s, has concerns about Chiellini's concentration levels and believes it hinders his ability to play at the heart of the defence.

"Chiellini has some difficulties when playing centrally," Vierchowod told TuttoMercatoWeb. "When playing centrally he sometimes 'falls asleep'."

Vierchowod then went on to say that Juventus are in need of defensive reinforcements, although he admitted that the current partnership between Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci has potential.

"Although the partnership of Barzagli and Bonucci is a defence which has personality, Juventus now need an extra centre-back."

The former Italy international also warned that the current Serie A leaders need to learn lessons from last season if they are to challenge for honours.

"Juventus must also demonstrate continuity and consistency in their results, and must not repeat the mistakes of last year, in which the team collapsed from January onwards."

The Turin side currently sit top of the Serie A table with 11 points from five encounters.

I don't know if I can agree with this but as a whole, our back 4 looks a good bit better with Chiellini at LB. Hopefully we buy a LB come January.

I agree somewhat. I especially agree with Vierchowod that if we do in fact move Chiello there permanantly, we definitly need a top drawer CB. Well, maybe not op class, but a veteran with experience at the top.

Alex comes to mind but only bc we have been linked with him consistently. If Napoli fail to do well this season I would make a push next season for Campagnaro... the guy is a beast... can play either side of CB, plays as a right back, DM, and sometimes RMF

Chiellini is defo a better player at LB...he has so much energy and surges forward with so much power!

Chiellini is a natural LB, that is his position. He may be better as a LB than as a CB. He prefers to play as a CB, but at the end of the day Conte may convince him to be a LB again. If that's the case, then our LB position is solved and all we need is more cover at CB. With us being linked to Rholdolfo and Alex, hopefully one of those players comes to us in January and then our back line would basically be covered.

Then all that is needed is a big time, game changing player up front and we are set for the scudetto...

its better if we make him LB , he is great at both but LB is a priority , in jan we get Rholdolfo , then our defense is complete
