What do you think about specialist coaching?
I never came up with this idea, funny enough I have only thought about it because of Redknapp's suggestion.
"Arsene is entitled to his own opinion but I think it won't be long before we go down the American football route and have specialised coaches for every position in the team," Redknapp told The Sun.
"I played out in America and got hooked on the NFL while there. They are years ahead of us in terms of coaching. They have quarterback coaches, wide receiver coaches, a coach for almost every conceivable aspect of the game.
"I see nothing wrong with it. It will only improve the players and, as a result, improve the end product which is designed to entertain the fans."
Redknapp admits that at West Ham his team trained without an official goalkeeper coach, but he would embrace any opportunities to bring in specialists.
"Sometimes you have a group of about 20 players and you end up trying to do something that caters for them all and you come away afterwards and wonder what you have actually achieved," he noted.
"What we must do is reassess what we mean by 'coaching'.
"I'm all for drilling the lads for what they will be required to do every Saturday. If my chairman rings me today and says 'Harry, we want to bring in some more specialised coaches for you' I'd be delighted.
"After all, we have expert dieticians, expert medics and expert fitness guys. Why not expert trainers to get the best out of your players?"
Do you think it is better for the game or just stick with what we have now?

Re: What do you think about specialist coaching?
AFAIK all German teams have specialist goalkeeper coaches, and obviously it isn't for the worst, if you look at all the upcoming young German goalies.
Dunno about separate specialists for the outfield players, but IMO outfield players should actually get a rather broad training in other than their favourite positions, so that they understand better what their colleagues do, so outfield players would probably profit more from proper all-round training.

Re: What do you think about specialist coaching?
Yeh keepers have their own coaches, but wouldn't every player excel at what they do best if they specifically focused on their job?
everyone doing their part better = whole team better

Re: What do you think about specialist coaching?
The question is - is it sensible to specialize outfield players too much? Or would it be better to teach them to be more versatile?

Re: What do you think about specialist coaching?
Maybe you could have coaches that can specialize attacking players to be great in a number of areas?
So you could have someone focusing on Wingers, inside forwards and SS.
Coaches for the CM, DM, ACM.

Yeah. Or rotate the players between the coaches so that they learn what tactical necessities and technical specialties other positions require and thus they can better interact with their teammates on these other positions.

American football relies a lot on team work so they must be doing something right.

Re: What do you think about specialist coaching?
a team is more than the sum of its part.
On American Football. The game starts and stops so often that the game is more like a single maneuver. And creating the maneuver is the job of the main coach.

Just because Egghand does it doesn't mean we have to do it.
One main coach please.

egghand - not football
But we do need goalkeepers' coaches. Goalies are different from the rest after all!
