If my club paid 30+M for an unneeded defender, I would expect miracles from him, not wait and hope for improvement, but if he was that type of players I guess RM would have paid 50+M for him especially that he is a portugese.

I'm not sure if he's a flop yet, but I don't see how he's going to perform by constantly switching positions and I can see him being benched once Kheds and Sahin are fit.

I think he's a good back up for Marcelo, he's a better defender but a poorer going forward. He offers a lot of options to the team, he did quite well in the Super Cup against Barcelona in midfield and bar the last two games he's been very impressive for Madrid.

Again Marcelo was the only natural left full back in the whole Madrid team, it doesn't hurt to have another top quality full back as back up, Coentrao was the most in demand full back in the last transfer window after a very impressive season with Benfica. Chelsea, Bayern and a host of other clubs were chasing him, he hasn't suddenly turned bad.

Marca and their knee jerking again, I remember how they treated Benzema and Higuain some seasons back, I wouldn't read too much into what they write.

I dont think that was unnecessary transfer.

We had no back up LB for marcelo,an injury to marcelo and our season screwed.Now we have one of the best LBs in the world if not the best young LB.

Problem is due to injuries he played out of position all his matches,not a fair way to judge any players.is it? may be for madrid players lol.

As a supporter this signing embarrasses me. Unfortunately I don't think backup can be used as a valid excuse.

Anyway he is injured now and will miss next game with Pepe.

Barca paid 30 mil for Alves.I think the fee rose to 40 mil with trophies and appearances.
But every single Barca fan will tell you that he has been worth every single penny.Infact even if the club had to pay 50 mil it would still have been worth it.
He is that damn good.
So who knows.Maybe in time Coentrao will be worth it.
But then again he is no Alves.Not even close.
The only defenders I would pay 30 mil for are Vidic and Marcelo.The latter is a gem of a player and I dont see why Madrid had to pay so much for a backup.

He plays off position. To ask him being successful at midfield is like asking CR to turn into uber-defender. Real better sell Coentrao before fin. fair play, while they can still get 3/4 or 2/3 of his original price. I believe in Coentrao and wish him success.

It was a stupid deal and the only reason was becouse someone convinced Mou putting a LB at CM is a good idea

Elaborate rather than just using so much effort for clicking on a simile.

I would have been happy to keep Sarabia for back up in the wings, I would have been happy to promote Alex and cover for CM (imo better than using Coentrao) and I would have been happy to promote Nacho to back up Marcelo.

let him play LB and experiment with marcelo as a RB or he will flop. he is no CM.

How can it be a stupid move by Madrid? Coentrao is more defensively solid than Marcelo, and in matches when he's needed to fill in, he can easily slot in. Coentrao is a quality player and was worth every cent Madrid paid for him, but he needs time, I'd rather have a quality player to replace Marcelo when he gets injured/suspended/ or plays badly in a match.

Quality players like Coentrao should start,not be a sub/play in a few games.And he is definitely not worth 30M.
