Most Top 40 artists just don't have the singing or writing talent that artists of previous decades have had. Almost every rapper that becomes popular is terrible. Producers like David Guetta, etc. who've made the EDM scene big are not completely talentless, but they've geared all their new stuff towards trying to please main stream crowds as opposed to just creating good tracks.
At the end of the day though, I try not to complain about it. Music is subjective and what I find terrible is probably loved by someone else. And who am I to judge anybody.
