This is the transcript for a live chat that took place yesterday with Jamie Sanderson, the owner of the reputable Young Guns blog. He's a pretty reliable source of information and in that transcript he answers a number of questions on first team transfers.
Here are the ones I picked out. I've bolded the oens of real interest:
Q: Is there any news regarding Arsenal and Keiskue Honda?
A: No. Arsene Wenger has often admitted he likes him, but there's no Arsenal interest at present, as far as I'm aware.
Q: Do you expect Wenger to sign both Cahill and Samba? Or two other CB's?
A: I expect one centre back, maximum. I don't believe we will go for Gary Cahill. Samba looks a realistic solution, but trying to agree a fee both clubs are happy with is difficult.
Q: Any news on outbound players from the senior squad?
A: Not yet. There has been enquries for Bendtner, Denilson and Rosicky, but no deals have been struck and it looks like they'll drag on for a bit.
Q: Is there anything behind the rumours about Eto'o and Arsenal?
A: Not as far as I know. He's on huge wages and unlikely to take a hit on them. Manchester City is a much more likely destination.
Q: What is the likelihood of Arsenal signing Scott Parker and/or Keisuke Honda this summer?
A: Almost 0% for both, in my view.
Q: Who're the most realistic transfer targets for the Gunners?
A: Gervinho, Samba and a couple of other less known players. I don't think Wenger knows who yet. There's been some interest in Willian and Costa, plus others.
Q: Are we in for Varane or not?
A: There's interest, but Real Madrid and Manchester United have made moves for him. Doubt we'll compete.
Q: Will Arshavin be staying?
A: Yes, unless there is a very, very good offer.
Q: Any truth in the Joey Barton rumours?
A: Ha. Nope. ()
Q: When do you expect the Gervinho signing to be announced?
A: No idea. It's up to the website staff to get the interviews, photos and videos done before they'll announce it.
Q: What do you think about Vela's future at Arsenal?
A: Wenger confirmed he'll be back in the first-team next season, so there's your answer.
Q: Our interest in Benzema; is it real?
A: Last January it was but Madrid have said he's not for sale. Mourinho counts on him for next season.
Q: Do you think there's a chance of Patrick Vieira returing to Arsenal in any capacity?
A: Not yet. I think he'll go to another club, possibly PSG, for a year or so, then do his coaching badges in France.
Q: Do you know anything about the speculation of Charles N'Zogbia moving to Arsenal?
A: Not true.
Q: Do you think Wenger will go for another midfielder as backup for Song?
A: Depends how much is left in the budget. I doubt there will be much left, so probably not. Maybe in January.
Q: Was Ashley Young an Arsenal target?
A: Don't believe so. We've got his brother anyway, 15-year-old Kyle Young!
Q: How many signings do you think Arsenal will make this summer?
A: That depends on how many we can clear out. I'd say at least three, and if we can move a few players out, possibly a couple more.
Q: Do you think we will take Seb Larsson back or is it case of linking every player with us?
A: His Dad confirmed today he will join Sunderland next week.
Q: Can you see Thomas Vermaelen moving to left back to shore up a venurable defence from set pieces? Hence why we could be after 2 center backs?
A: Only the papers say we're after two. They can't seem to get their story straight on it. I don't see Vermaelen being anything other than a centre back for the next few seasons.
Q: With RVP's injury record, Bendtner leaving and Gervinho and Chamakh likely to go to the African Cup of Nations, do you think Arsenal will sign another striker?
A: Maybe in January. Not right now.
Q: Is there any interest for Leighton Baines from Arsenal ?
A: Not as far as I'm aware.
Q: What about the rumours concerning Ricky Alvarez, Defoe and Parker? Any chance getting one of those?
A: Alvarez is set to go to either Roma or Malaga, most likely Roma. Nothing in the other two players.
some pretty disappointing stuff if you ask me....

Good post with that interview.. So our marquee signings are Gervinho and Samba almost certainly and end of summer transfers.. Maybe another kid or two like Jenkinsson.. Why do I have a feeling that this is a sucky saturday morning? :/ The Benzema part really made it worse.

Rick Alvarez is not joining Roma any more, the negotiations with them broke down, he is joining an English club now
Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
None of us have really seen Alvarez in action on his own; however, I really like what I saw of him in the youtube videos. He brings something different than all of our team, or maybe thats just because of how bad the defending is in Argentina.

Samba tweeted:
'good morning, busy day ahead for me today, will let you know how it goes.'
maybe hinting on a deal?

I've honestly just stopped following the rumors, its pretty pointless. I will wait until we officially sign someone or until someone leaves before thinking about what we should do.
Currently there are just too many possible scenarios.

Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
I really think Tottenham will get Alvarez if Modric goes. Arry loves to declare his interest in nearly every player we scout.
If he do come then i see rosicky leaving for sure.
Gervinho's announcement was going to be made earlier but he extended his holidays in Ivory coast longer then expected. Plus Lille are hoping for a bit more money.

I doubt Spuds will get Alvarez, our interest in him was concrete even before Modric declared he wanted out.. Plus, we> Spuds so the sensible decision would be to come to us.

Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Lille have confirmed negotiations to sell Gervinho to Arsenal are making progress and expect a resolution to be found next week.
Gervinho is keen to move to the Premier League and has been linked with several clubs, including Manchester City and Newcastle United.
However, Arsenal appear to be favourites to capture the Ivory Coast international with reports claiming the attacker will cost in the region of £10million.
A move to Lille's Ligue 1 rivals Paris St Germain has been ruled out and the French champions' general manager Frederic Paquet revealed talks are continuing.
"It should be next week," Paquet told mercato365.com regarding the current state of the discussions.
"These are negotiations that start slowly. Is it on track? I do not know. Today I can not tell.
"Could the player still leave for PSG? Gervinho wants to go to England and, as a club, we prefer to sell Gervinho abroad."
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11670_6995011,00.html
It'll be done this week. No, wait, it'll be done next week. Maybe the week after that, or maybe the week after that...
Here's what the Daily Mail said on the 16th:
Arsenal are on the brink of signing £10.5million hitman Gervinho.
The Gunners are close to agreeing a four-year deal with the Lille striker in their first major swoop of the summer.
The Ivory Coast international played a key role as Lille won the French league and cup double last season, scoring 15 goals.
Earlier this month, Lille general manager Frederic Paquet has confirmed Gervinho wants to move to England and talks with Arsenal are planned.
'He wants to go and has developed contacts with Arsenal,' Paquet said. 'We will soon have talks with them and see what they offer. He has expressed a desire to go to England and we will see what happens.'
Manchester City, Tottenham and Newcastle were all also interested in bringing Gervinho to the Barclays Premier League.
But he has opted for the Gunners as they attempt to ensure they don't make it seven years without a trophy next season.
Boss Arsene Wenger is under pressure to spend big as fans grow impatient with the club's trophy drought.
Charlton youngster Carl Jenkinson is the only other summer arrival in a £1m deal from League One side Charlton.
Wenger is monitoring defenders Gary Cahill and Chris Samba to beef up his backline, while Gervinho's Eden Hazard is also a target.

So much contradictory stuff, as always.

And then wenger will say that they have asked too much for him so he won't sign him
Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Today it is yet again in the papers that Eto’o is willing to try playing in the Premier League if he is offered a good “project” rather than the astronomical wages he usually commands, and I thought ‘if he wants to prove he can score goals in the Premiership, he won’t get more chances than if he joins Arsenal’.
He said: “ I now have the idea of proving myself in England. The money is not key for me – I will decide by the sporting project.
what you guys think of this?

If he really means it, I say bring him in. He's a proven goal scorer and performs in the big games
BUT
if bringing him in means an extraordinary transfer fee, forget it. Rather have Benzema.

Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
The main issue is Eto'o and Song having a very poor relationship, to the extent where Eto'o got Song booted off the Cameroon team. If I had the choice between who to keep happy, it'd be Song, because Song is more important to our team than Eto'o would be.
Then you consider monetary issues. He's 30 years of age and will cost more than £20,000,000 at least, plus his wages are still going to be ridiculously high regardless of whether he was willing to take a cut or not.
A striker is not a necessity and I don't think we should break the bank for one at this moment in time.

Raptorgunner wrote:Eto would great, he will take Arsenal to the next level. Eto;o and Song will work things out for greater good.
That's an optimistic way to look at things.
Eto'o is a great player but his ego is massive. I'm not quite sure he and Song can work out their issues. Not many footballers who have problems with each other actually do work out their problems and it has a negative impact on the team.
I remember Gallas and Toure not having a great relationship and it got to the point where the two simply couldn't play with each other. One had to go and Toure, being the one out of form and declining, was the one. Gallas showed what a mercenary he was and left not long afterwards.
Adebayor, also, had bad relationships with a lot of players and it effected his performances. He, too, eventually left and we're better off for it.
Ultimately, you can't have poor relationships amongst your squad. The sense I get from the squad at the moment is that there're a very united group of people. Szczesny, Djourou and Wilshere are all close friends. Wilshere is well-liked by van Persie (calls him little brother sometimes), and van Persie has good relations with Fabregas (who Wilshere has great respect for) and Vermaelen. You get my point. It just doesn't seem wise to disrupt this.
