Re: Versatilities in Barca Team
I would say that list is a bit inflated and that Keita isn't a LB at all, but nice list anyway.
And lol at Pinto joke

Re: Versatilities in Barca Team
I think it could be made a little simpler too, and only Adriano and Pedro are actually ambidextrous, no?? It's just Villa and Afellay have excellent wrong foots.
1. Valdes (Sweeper keeper)
2. Dani Alves (RB, RW)
3. Pique (CB, DM)
4. Fabregas (DM, CM, F9)
5. Puyol (CB, RB, LB)
6. Xavi (CM, DM)
7. David Villa (CF, LF, RF)
8. Iniesta (CM, LW, F9)
9. Alexis (RF, LF, F9)
10. Messi (F9, RF)
11. Thiago (CM, F9, RW, LW)
13. Pinto (GK, Bodyguard, Ref)
14. Mascherano (CB, DM)
15. Keita (CM, DM)
16. Busquets (DM, CB, CM)
17. Pedro (RF, LF)
19. Maxwell (LB, RB, CM, LW)
20. Afellay (RW, LW, CM, F9)
21. Adriano (LB, RB, LW)
22. Abidal (LB, CB)
24. Fontas (CB, DM)
35. Montoya (RB, LB)
1. Valdes (Sweeper keeper)
2. Dani Alves (RB, RW)
3. Pique (CB, DM)

Re: Versatilities in Barca Team
I wouldn't put Busquets as CB too. He has played there, but he sucks. I hope Pep never plays him again at CB in an official match, ever.

He's done alright I thought. Not sure whether I'd want a Puyol, Masch combo for instance... it would be a nightmare bringing the ball out and they're both short. In theory, Fontas and Abidal should be Pique's backups as they're good on the ball. However, I guess Sergi drops so deep anyway it wouldn't matter. I also think Busi is so damn important in the mids... only want to see someone else good on the ball there (ie. Mascherano or Fab... not Keita).

Re: Versatilities in Barca Team
Today I was thinking... what would you do if Messi couldn't play in a big match?? Who would be the starting XI?
I guess it still depends on how the new players go (particularly Alexis, if he can play there), otherwise I'd go with this:

He's done alright? Then Fontàs has done as world class CB! Fontàs for starter!!!
I agree with you on the Busi part, Machete is not really good enough on the ball either when the opposition presses. We need Cesc there or adopt a different style.

Re: Versatilities in Barca Team
This article has a fantasy feel to it but I have to admit it aroused my interest. A few points mentioned have in some way or other been mentioned on our forum as well in the past. This author has written with a lot of confidence which I don't quite share but there are some interesting trends. After all every season we seem to be decreasing the number of pure CBs. The main idea here is that Pep does not play midfielders as CBs because he has to but rather than he likes to. From there on it builds to the concept of complete interchangeability and total football. I say it's worth a read at least even if you may not largely agree with it.

Re: Versatilities in Barca Team
Actually, Barça youth team's ahve been developing CB's that were previously midfielders since some time now(Fontas, Bartra, Valiente...).
On the specific setup proposed by the article, I don't think it can work for the reasons Nick stated. And I don't think Pep is planing this also.
