Xabi hasn't been "partnered with a DM" since Benitez.

He has been Madrid's deepest midfielder for a while now. Khedira is in charge of bringing the ball forward, being available for Xabi to pass to if he needs him or passing it to Xabi when he has the ball.

Watch A couple of Real Madrid games now and you'll be surprised if you think Alonso does the same things he did in Liverpool.

Spain were raped on the counter in those games, something that simply doesnt happen when Alonso and Busquets are there.....

Alonso has a such problem as far as defensive positional sense goes off the ball which allows for easy counter attacks......

He cannot play as a dm without a partner lol, what more proof do you need lol?

It's not a question of not rusting him. Of course they do otherwise he wouldn't be playing. Aside from maybe Benitez all those three adore Xabi. I'm 100% sure his name is one of the first on the team sheet for them.

Don Vicente and Jose seem to appreciate defensive stability over anything and another midfielder next to Xabi ensures that is the case. They know more than me and I won't even pretend they don't but maybe they think that it brings out the best in Xabi as opposed to not trusting him as you put it.

My suggestion was that Xabi could play as the deepest of a mid-field three. It's my opinion and I've seen enough to suggest that it can happen. I even explained why, what with Xabi being able to win tackles and control the game when Spain/Madrid have the ball.

All you did was say "lol no" and "Jose, VDB, Rafa agree with me", that doesn't prove me wrong it just proves that they think that's a better option.

Because Enrique is left footed and more mobile then Puyol at this point.

In a 3 man backline, the right and leftsided players need mobility. Also, Puyol has barely played this season.

Alonso can play as DM. He wont be completely isolated in the middle, the rest of the midfield and even the defence often helps him out. He always plays as DM for us, I hate how everyone just assumes without ever watching him.

I agree with Zeal's lineup, by and large.

Because lone DM is better then a double pivot if your trying to attack..and if your Spain, thats what you want.

if you dont watch Madrid play then please dont give an opinion on whether the man can play "a lone DM", Khedira likes to go wander off to wierd places on the field, which leaves Alonso exposed more often than not
Alonso plays an extremely deep role, where he drops to center of defense to play the ball
he defends alot and occupies that 3rd defender role alot of the time when Madrid are trying to start attacks
and this sort of plays into Spain's hands
considering you have most of possession is largely going to be defended against, you need a plan B high route or a long pass to open up the play which we know Alonso does on a regular basis

When will Del Bosque stop being sutbborn and realise that Spain sucks with double pivot? One of Busquets, Alonso should be on the bench, Iniesta in MF, Silva and Mata on the wings and Villa or Llorente as CF, Villa should stop playing as Wing Forward in NT.

Probably they will still play with Busquets - Alonso combo in the future games.

Yes it is, except Germany has a much more better goalkeeper.

Casillas; Arbeloa, Puyol, Ramos, Monreal; Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta; Navas, Villa, Torres or Cesc or Silva.

That's predicted starting XI for Costa Rica match. No double pivot? So much win, but that's probably not true, Alonso will start in place of Torres/Cesc/Silva. Llorente got a knock and is doubtful to play.
