Hello, I was lurking around on this thread, and couldn't stop myself from registering to post on this subject.
Watching that video, made me think about a lot of things, such as:
- whole point of our existence and all the universe around us
- is there A CREATOR (i mean somebody must be behind all this, something this enourmous and so detailed can't be just a coincidence, can it?
- basically religions could be true, because we can't proof that they are wrong 100 procently. Jesus walking on water, Mohammad hearing the angel Gabriel giving the words of God to him. You know all these ''MAGICAL'' things that seems silly to most atheists (and probably scientists too).
- What is the meaning of life, why do we exist, and for so short? (I mean our lifetimes are so short in the grand scheme of things, why do we live and die, and in the meantime reproduce (making babies) they will die eventually too. what is the meaning of all this? What are we here for? and why do we live so short?
- Where we before we were born and what happens after we die? What if when we die, we are born some other place in the universe in completely different civilizations as completely different life forms. More inteligent life forms?
I want to end my post with saying that after watching this video it reminded me about how small and unimportant we actually are. While we live such a tiny little bit of time, why are we so mean to each other? If we humans can't live in peace and harmony, how would we treat possible alieans whom we might share nothing with?

the more we learn the more it gets scary, life is a beautiful thing. If only more people watched the video, they would have more understanding of the world and universe.

Hello and welcome!
Watch the Carl Sagan series (the first link is posted above, this one is the next, and there are at least 8 about it) and you'll come away thinking that the belief in God or gods is reassuring but not likely, only a means for us to cope with the grandiosity of the universe which our simple minds, made for survival and migration cannot even begin to imagine.
This is the 2nd video in the series, very highly recommended!
ETA: and here's the first!

Well one theory that makes the most sense to me is the multiverse theory, which is that there is an infinite number of dimensions and universes. It's very interesting you guys should read up on it.
I'm a pretty logical person and my thought process is based on logic pretty much so I think that may be a reason why I believe that theory.

welcome to the forum buddy, interesting questions you have there, ill try to share my thoughts here just or the sake of the discussion
if we're talking religion, well, every religion explains our existance in its own way so no need to go there, but according to science, shit just happened. My beef with athiests in general is that they ignore the big question and hang on the details...yea the theory of evolution might suggest an explaination of how live evolved on earth, but it simply cant answer why the whole thing started. According to science there was nothing before the big bang, and according to science, something cant come from nothing, see the clear contradiction here ?
Another question for my fellow evolutionists...why did non living matter become living ? okay shit happened, but the base of the evolution theory is that beings evolve so they survive, but wouldnt the first living matter have to die before it could realize that it needs to survive ? how did reproduction start if the need for it (death) was not achieved (if the need was achieved then the living matter wouldnt have a chance to reproduce anyway)
so here comes the idea of a creator, and like i mentioned before (putting my faith on the side for the sake of the phylosophical discussion) we could've come from anywhere, but there's always a creator, and that creator communicates with us, the creations, through religion. But that doesnt mean if religion is wrong then the creator doesnt exist, they are two different things ! the possibility that a religion got corrupted is possible as much as the possibility that the creator didnt communicate with us in the first place.....so basically what im trying to say is, u can prove that religion is wrong if you prove that there is no god, but you cant prove that there is no god if you prove religion to be wrong
so why do we exist ? i guess that depends on your faith (or non faith), but the duration of our existance is meaningless. Tell me, can you feel time ? if you erase your memory and compare two of your thoughts that are independant of each other, would you know which one came first ? no you wouldnt.
so yea, we're tiny, unimportant, and worthless, and if you think about the meaning of life for long enough, you would know that it has no meaning, coz happyness doesnt last, and sadness doesnt last, they were moments that are not now, and only now matters, and now is....meaningless, we're always thinking of the past or the future, but never about now ! this moment ! i dont even think its possible, coz when i try to think about now its already in the past

Fifty New Planets Found—Largest Haul Yet
Discoveries include 16 Earthlike planets, astronomers say.
Fifty new alien worlds, including 16 "super Earths," have been found—the largest extrasolar planet haul announced at one time, astronomers say.
The discoveries bring the total number of known extrasolar planets, or exoplanets, to 645.
"The harvest of discoveries ... has exceeded all expectations, and includes an exceptionally rich population of super-Earths and Neptune-type planets hosted by stars very similar to our sun," study leader Michel Mayor, an astronomer at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, said in a statement.
One of the newly discovered worlds, dubbed HD 85512b, lies at the edge of its star's habitable zone—the region around a star where liquid water, and thus life as we know it, can exist. (See "New Planet May Be Among Most Earthlike—Weather Permitting.")
In Search of Smaller Planets
The planetary treasure trove was found using an instrument called HARPS—short for High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher—at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla facility in Chile.
Radial velocity, also known as the Doppler wobble technique, involves searching for wobbles in a star's light that indicate the gravitational pull of an orbiting planet.
The method most easily finds very massive planets that orbit close to their host stars. But in recent years astronomers have used radial velocity to find or confirm a number of planets down to a few times Earth's mass.
In fact, HARPS alone has detected about two-thirds of all known exoplanets with masses less than that of Neptune. In 2007, for instance, HARPS discovered another super-Earth, called Gliese 581d, that may lie within the habitable zone of its star.
For the new study, astronomers used HARPS to observe 376 sunlike stars in our home galaxy, the Milky Way.
Based on the number and variety of planets found around these stars, the team estimates that about 40 percent of all sunlike stars in the galaxy host at least one planet that is less massive than the gas giant Saturn.
Life-Supporting Planets Within Reach?
Scientists next plan to upgrade HARPS hardware and software and use the instrument to conduct a more refined search of nearby sunlike stars for rocky Earthlike planets that could support life.
"In the coming 10 to 20 years we should have the first list of potentially habitable planets in the sun's neighborhood," Mayor said.
(Related: "First Truly Habitable Planet Discovered, Experts Say.")
Future planets discovered by HARPS could also be among the best candidates for space telescopes to look for chemical signs of life—such as oxygen—in the planets' atmospheres, the team said.
MIT astronomer Sara Seager said that the new batch of planets orbits relatively bright stars, which could allow for followup observations using other planet-seeking methods that might glean more information than the radial velocity technique.
"It's great to have entered the era that discovering super-Earths is routine," added Seager, who was not involved in the HARPS research.
"Golden Age" of Exoplanet Discovery
Alan Gould, an astronomy educator at the University of California, Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science, called the discoveries "pretty exciting."
"This big batch of planets contributes to our overall knowledge of what extrasolar planet systems are like—how common Jupiter-type giant planets are relative to Neptune-types and super Earths, and whether they're close in or far out from their host stars," said Gould, also a member of NASA's Kepler exoplanet-finding mission.
"These kinds of statistics can help us figure out what star-planet systems are like in general, and that has implications for whether there are Earthlike planets or not.
"This is looking more and more like a golden age of exoplanet discovery."
