Your top 5 players in the world
This used to be so easy, but not so anymore, so there's an idea for a thread.
Here's mine:
Rodri
Mbappe
Curtois
Kane
Vini Jr
I would have De Bruyne rather high on this list but I don't think he'll be the same after these injuries.

Re: Your top 5 players in the world
I think the top 3 is still pretty clear:
Messi
Haaland
Mbappe
The rest... Is tough.
And I'm not sure if I'm officially old, but as I think to myself who the best player in a position is right now (hakimi for FB? Ruben for CB?) I can't help but think these guys wouldn't be fit to tie the shoe laces of the greats from the previous generation.

Mbappe

Top 2 without a single doubt.
I'll give Messi 3rd because of his world cup. But that ends come 2024. I saw what he was at club level in France and I see how MLS is basically playing off of him (I'm positive they've been told not to touch him and I get it). It's age... nothing else. Not skill or his "magic".
He has it still. But he can bring it on occasion only against real competition (not MLS). A good comp is Zidane in 2006. He was basically done other than on occasions and then put together a great world cup.
After that, it's wide open as BC said. Nobody really stands out. De Bruyne is injured too often. Vini... more hype than reality (although he is good). Kane... yes once I see what he does at Bayern. Pedri could get there. Bellingham could get there this season.
I feel like there is such a massive chasm after Mbappe and Haaland... and then again after Messi.
Players need to step up.

whoever is objectively the best defender, so i'm gonna say Bremer
Same feelings here
I can think of 3 explanations, some are mutually exclusive, not sure which one is accurate, maybe none is accurate
- The average level of a pro footballer is much better than before and it's increasingly harder to stand out
- The quality is more or less the same but we are not sensitive to new players charisma, we got older and there is no need to look up at sportsmen anymore. Like yeah Vinicius is very good, but whatever really...
- Football is so cancered by money that players see football strictly as a job, only care for millions and likes on TikTok, despite all the best training and nutrition techniques, it turns out passion and values such as loyalty and eager to win are the main drivers to reach your maximum potential as player. As a result the level of football in general has gone down.
Edit i just thought of a 4th one, as i remember a post i've read on GL (from Casciavit i think)
- Football is too tactical these days, players cannot display the entirety of their talent

Re: Your top 5 players in the world
Everyone has Haaland in their top 2
I think he has a few more steps to make tbh. Man is a Viking, no doubt, impressive in every way. But I feel his instincs need to develop a bit more and his technique leaves a bit to be desired.
If he can tune in a long range shot in there as well he'll be the best in the world. I find it strange that a man of such shot power and an eye for goal can't score from outside the box.
He did also go missing in the crucial stage of Man City's season. If he can work all this out he will be one of the best ever.

Haaland is a better club player/performer than Mbappe. Mbappe lives off France performances, which is relevant, i respect him for that, but he needs to get out of Ligue Un before i can take him more serious.

Re: Your top 5 players in the world
True.
But they are very different. The reason I would put Mbappe over Haaland at this moment is the fact that I have never, since I've watched football, seen such service to a striker as Haaland recieved last year. I think it's safe to say that 3/4 of Haalands goals never required more than a single touch and a lot of those were into an empty net.
But not to take anything away from Haaland, props to him anticipating those passes and being in the right place.
Also those France games proved that Mbappe is a big game player, while Haaland is yet to prove that.

Re: Your top 5 players in the world
Haaland is also a more efficient finisher, crisper/stronger striking technique. Mbappe has more pace and his play-style looks more suave because he plays on the wing and beats more players with his speed and fast touch, that's why those that rate him higher than Haaland rate him higher imo

After that it's tough. Bellingham could get there. Kane, perhaps we'll see. Saka too is one who could get there. KDB, not sure, strikes me as a cross spammer. Rodri could be but if Casemiro wasn't when he was at his peak then Rodri sure as hell shouldn't. Messi has gone to a third division league. GOATnaldo has gone to a second division league. MATS, well he could if he didn't flop in the CL.
The rest are several levels below imo.

when last did you see Lewandowski play to warrant putting him over Kane?
De Bruyne definitely has top 5 raw quality but he is injured too much, and lives off of being a cross spammer in Pep's system. Virtually called it quits with Belgium this past WC.

I don't think you'll see that from him at Man City. His role has been reduced to being a fox in the box. I've come to terms with it, it is what it is.

True. I don't think he and Bernardo Silva gets much credit, if at all, for literally dragging the rest of the team (including KDB) through a real slump in form during the first half of last season, though. The likes of Mahrez and Gundogan got a lot of recognition for their late season heroics, which is fair, but they ghosted through a lot of the early games despite getting regular rest.

A couple of months ago as he won the league with Barca
Lewandowski has been performing as one the best players in the world for years. Kane is also a shout, lets see him now win things at Bayern and play deeper into the CL.

I wouldn’t include Messi or Neymar because they don’t play in Europe anymore, they’re irrelevant in the grand scheme of things at this point.

he is bound to rightfully win the upcoming Ballon Dor, so i think he still warrants his number one spot...
he is still relatively fresh off winning the WC in outstanding fashion, and all his timely long-range goals for Inter Miami are still impressive regardless of the state of the league... he could've easily gone there and decided to pack it up, but you can see winning still means a lot to him, and he is actually enjoying his football unlike in Paris
i agree with what someone said above, once he scoops up his final Ballon Dor and 2024 comes around the impact of his WC win expires in our minds, and then anything he does in MLS increasingly becomes more irrelevant

Re: Your top 5 players in the world
Completely agree and I fully believe that Messi should win the Bdor. Moreover, if both him and Neymar were to still play in Europe, they would be by far the best players, but they are not competitive anymore.
On another note, I’m a bit baffled by how overlooked Vinicius is, considering that he was the best performing player in the CL last season and one of the top3/5 the season before. We let him down as a team unfortunately in the last campaign.
