DFB-Pokal - German Cup 2021/22
The Pokal starts this weekend - the first couple of games already were yesterday, with Dynamo Dresden beating 2nd BuLi "MEGA" competitors Paderborn.
Dynamo Dresden - SC Paderborn 2:1 (0:0)
1860 München - Darmstadt 98 5:4 i.E. (1:1, 0:0)
The FC Bayern was supposed to start things off too, yesterday night, against the fearsome 5th division Bremer SV, but due to a few Covid cases in the Bremen squad, the game got postponed to August 25th.
With Bayern not playing this weekend, the only other game of note will be that of the
SpVgg Bayreuth vs Arminia Bielefeld
- today at 15:30 (3.30pm CEST), which deserves some further elaboration:
The SpVgg (short for Spielvereinigung "Playing Union") is a lovable and historic football club from the placid, if not exactly picturesque, Upper Franconian town Bayreuth - a town of some 70000 inhabitants and of insignificant history, were it not for a certain dozen of years in the earlyish mid-20th century, in which it proudly served as a proclaimed Cultural and Spiritual Capital of the, albeit not yet quite conquered, world.
An administrative center of of Upper Franconia, whose main assets are sausage and beer production (assets that regrettably have curbed both the mental and physical agility of its native population) it is often regarded as the twin sister of idyllic nearby Bamberg - or rather, Bamberg's ugly, uncultured, protestant twin brother from a separate egg.
The SpVgg itself has its home in the part of Bayreuth called "old town" - 'Altstadt' - a name that has been transfered to the club itself - the SpVgg Bayreuth is the 'Altstadt'. So if you don't want to say "Spielvereinigung", you can just say "dee Olldshdodd".
Paradoxically, the Altstadt is not so much a historic part of town as an underfunded and run down area of mostly low-income housing blocks.
Here's a couple of pictures of the SpVgg's native training ground at the Jakobshöhe (Jacob's height even if there's no height there) in the Altstadt part of Bayreuth:
Long since however, the club is playing its home games in the Municpal Stadium of Bayreuth, named "Hans-Walter-Wild-Stadion" after a long-serving Social Democratic mayor of the town.
Located along the banks of therivercreek Roter Main (Red Main), one of the two headstreams of the Main River, it also sits next to a local high school, students of which incidentally used to work through the track and fields parts of their physical education in the stadium and its secondary field.
As such, the Hans-Walter-Wild-Stadium, on top of witnessing the Altstadt's checkered performances and Michael Jackson performing as part of his "Dangerous" World Tour 1992, in the 1990s saw what surely must be considered some of the greatest and most impressive 2nd-4th place finishes ever achieved in middle and long distance running school and district competitions, displayed by the incomparably elegant, red-faced and fleet-footed local student H.(*)
Anway--- the Altstadt had its greatest sporting era in the late 70s, when it played 2nd Bundesliga and came within a hair's width to promotion into Bundesliga in 1979. The greatest triumph of Altstädter history, however, was beating the FC Bayern München in the DFB Pokal in 1980, with the SpVgg reaching the quarter finals of that season's competition.
After decades of mediocrity and then financial struggle (just in the last decade, the team was twice being denied the achieved promotion, into 3rd division, by league administrators due to financial problems and suffered forced regulation into 6th division), the SpVgg is now back on its feet!
It's doing well in 4th division, it's playing good football, and it's back in the cup for the first time in 15 years, facing a Bundesliga team at home right away.
5000 fans will be in the stadium, kick off is in little more than half an hour! LET'S GOOOOOOO

Based on the posting time, I will assume you were upset about Werder going out, dont be.
But yeah Haaland is a force of nature, be interesting to see how he and BVB do this year.

Very surprised how much Upamecano is struggling at Bayern. Wonder if this is just a dip adjusting to new club, or sign of things to come where Leipzig plays more defensive n makes him look better than he is? Hernandez also a bad game.
But Monchen played great and Bayern seemed shell shocked for most of the game.
Commentator said Bayern knocked out this early last time was 20 yrs ago... well played Monchen A wake up call for Bayern as well. This stuff happens to them repeatily for some reason, reminds of the loss vs Real in CL.

Bayern was knocked out this early (2nd round) last season.. maybe the commentator got confused because last season the game had been postponed until January
Upamecano had two absolute stinker games this season, Frankfurt and Gladbach (both of which we lost), apart form that he was pretty great.
But those two games were mindbogglingly bad.
But if you think that it is because Leipzig played such different football than Bayern, you're kind of missing an important thing...
Hernandez has been fantastic all season, didn't have a good game yesterday just as everyone else apart from Neuer

Somebody probably leaked doping check up for Bayern, and they were out of their usual drugs. Doesn't make sense otherwise. Hopefully Fifa is finally looking into this.

Thanks Hans. Well I dont follow Leipzig closely but they definitely look like playing defensively more in numbers in comparison to Bayern I mean? I know they also press n attack crazy but not always overall?
Interesting also am keeping an eye out on how Konate is doing at Liverpool the other formal Leipzig defender, who seemed to boss CR. If hes anything good, him n Van Dijk should form a top CB pairing as well.

I meant because Leipzig was also managed by Nagelsmann for the last seasons so Upamecano wouldn't have had to play a different kind of football there
