Keeping an eye on it for sure
Firenze wrote:Robespierre wrote:Involved from GL hype ( especially by El Gunner) on Succession .... I've begun it yesterday
After just the first 2 episodes I can say hype is deserved.
I need to get into this next
things I'm watching currently:
The Righteous Gemstones (B)
1883 (B+)
Peacemaker (A)
things I've dropped recently;
Yellowjackets
The Mayor of Kingstown
things I plan to watch;
Dopesick
Succession
some Korean apocalyptic zombie show based on a webtoon...drops in a couple days, forget the name
I like this format
Things I've watched recently:
Dopesick (B+): A damning yet engaging look into Big Pharma, even if only half of it is true. Dragged at pieces and some arcs were a bit too on the nose for me, but overall still very enjoyable.
The Tinder Swindler (C+): Makes for an entertaining 2 hours and is part of the zeitgeist right now but you get the sense that things are not exactly as they portray them, everyone's trying to show their best face and I'm not really sure the movie challenges its stars at all. It also could've been easily done in half the time.
Dropped:
Yellowstone: Made it through the first season after abandoning it a first time but too many characters made too many dumb decisions for my taste. A bit too soapy. Finished S1 more out of a sense of completionism than anything else. Does it get better?
Succession: Maybe it was a mistake to pick this up after Yellowstone but felt like Yellowstone in NYC. I maybe had the wrong expectation as I thought it would be more like a family drama but felt more like a dark comedy. Dropped after 2 episodes.
Things I plan to watch
Raised by Wolves S2
Vikings: Valhalla (Feb 25)

I enjoyed Dopesick, solid performances, intriguing and infuriating insight into Big Pharma, though I was already aware of Purdue and the Oxycontin crisis since I'd seen a documentary on it a few years ago.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Dopesick was very good, my biggest issue was too many storylines and not enough depth into each story.
Solution would have been to cut some storylines or expend the series from a 8 episodes mini series.

Watched Reacher (B-)
It's a good solid action-detective show. Some good characters, others not so good. Firenze's first breakthrough was good as Jack Reacher. Nice action here n there. It's entertaining without being anything extraordinary. It's getting great reception from the book fans. Never seen the Tom cruise films so no idea how they compare.

good to see you again man, hope life is going well, was wondering where you were.
funnily enough I actually read 10 or so of the Reacher books back in like 2009/10, friend recommended them. Fast food literature. I was shocked when Cruise got cast as Reacher, who was a force of nature, a 6'5 terminator. I watched some of the first couple eps of this show, seemed alright as a time passer, saw people comparing it to generic action shows in the 2000s, did seem that way. It was really distracting how the actor walked though, like he was trying not to take a shit.

Yea all good man. Just life. But back for good now.
The actor walks like the big show lol. But you can tell he is trying his best. He has potential to be a good action hero.

I frankly enjoy Yellowstone a lot. It's not my aesthetic culturally, but it is very entertaining. BC's criticism of S1 are valid. It does fix most of them in the subsequent seasons. Season 4 is probably the show's best though that's debatable along with Season 3.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Glad to hear it gets better, don't understand the hype based off S1 alone. Also, every other episode features a bear. Just how many bears could there be in this ranch??
Myesyats I'm like the only person I know that didn't love this show so prob still worth a watch.
Guardedly optimistic on rings of power. If nothing else it should be a visual treat.

Yeah there's been a lot of derision around Rings of Power for some of the more obvious updates made to world of Middle-Earth. At this point, I'm going in with pretty low expectations. I wish more did.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
It feels more like Hobbit than LOTR no? I was excited for this but the trailer doesnt give me much hope. Another one I was looking forward to is TLOU on hbo but casting Bella Ramsey as Ellie is a questionable decision imo. She's a great actress but I'm not sure it's a fit

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
LOTR lore??????? I am all in ffs #GandalfIn but I'd rather my fellow boomers watch and rate before I disappoint myself with another "hey lets carry on nostalgia" but they top of the sandwich is focused on things (for current gen kids) other than the original story.
Does this relate to the books? What is the timeline? This is between Silmarillion and the Hobbit?

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
I' ve listened that 1883 is better than Yellowstone ( the first one is the prequel) and I liked Yellowstone
Anyway I've just ended Succession.
Fantastic series, what I've loved particulary is the characterization of the characters.
I mean I loved every single character in the show, even the minor characters, everyone wass different but so good represented.
And I've loved that good sarcasm in this series.

- Spoiler:
- I found relevant the Jess' loyality, the Kendall assistent. Essentially the only person to be till the end towards him in the series

God i love this show... the entire sequences in the apartment with the kids was glorious. The constant state of double crossing, one-upmanship and pure comedy gold!!! Just banderas.gif
The Trojan Horse and then Shiv entering the scene is just meta levels of hilarious by Jesse Armstrong. It could mean a lot or it could mean nothing at all. I think Shiv is trying to hold out longer to save face with Logan and the rest of the family in case Logan makes a masterstroke move or Kendall self-destructs... but ultimately i think she wants to do the "right thing" with Kendall and make a late move his side by gaining more intel in camp Logan
as for Roman, i can't really tell since he is just Gerri's psychosexual puppy... i found importance in him calling Gerri after the kids apartment meeting, i don't know why it just felt like an important twist moment for me that... Didn't Logan request a private chat with Gerri in the previous episode that we never got to see. Is he trying to use Gerri as his body armour to make his way through this war? What does Gerri gain out of all of it? A CEO post? come on, she's just a loyal hardworker, not a power hungry leader. But how loyal is she?
it's obvious Logan is trying to play the kids against one another because he knew Kendall would try to invite them in on his side
- Succession S03E07:
Wow this was a hard episode to watch. Felt like Kendall was suicidal with the "I wish i was..." line.
Man I always had a dislike for Roman since the first episode when he ripped off a 1m check in front of that kid, but in the last two episodes he has really solidified himself as just a general awful human being.
- Spoiler:
- Honestly I rate Roman as the best character of series
Yes, he is sometimes crude , immature, but he's fucking amusing, he's hilarious even just with his tone of voice

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Top 5 in terms of performance:
1. Kendall
2. Logan
3. Tom
4. Roman
5. Connor
Matthew Macfayden absolutely killed it last season though and he should be getting all the nominations and awards but the voters of course suck as usual. Still i put Kendall and Logan over him for everything they have done the first two seasons.
Favourite characters after season 3:
1. Connor
2. Tom
3. Willa
4. Josh Aaronson (Adrien Brody, hope he comes back more on a full-time basis for next season)
5. Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgaard)
1. Kendall
2. Logan
3. Tom
4. Roman
5. Connor
