Varane sucks. I really don't understand why anybody would think otherwise at this point.

I completely get that. Players are expensive now, and Varane with all his flaws, is still an experienced CB who can be quite useful at times, provided Ramos is also there to cover for his mistakes. But yeah, overall, he's a defender who has regressed quite dramatically and still living off the GOAT status he once embodied and no longer possess.

We should start looking for a replacement though because once Ramos retires, he'll leave behind a gaping hole that not even 1000 Varane's can fill.

How many times have we made those comments about Ramos, Kroos, CR etc... in the past? You also have to accept that the form of a player can dip and then go back to what it used to be. Varane is pretty damn great when on form.

Also last I checked, a center back needs a partner that balances his strength and weaknesses. Militao doesn’t hence why they don’t look good. I recall a time when Pepe Ramos was disastrous as a paring at the back lol

I like to whine about Madrid as much as anyone and god damn did they get lucky once again in their group to somehow top it (although credit to them they won when they needed to)

But they topped their group. If you do that, you get teams like Atalanta.

Varane sucks. He is absolutely terrible. Every header is straight to an opposition player in dangerous area, every pass is to Tibo or Ramos. Can't even outmuscle Gabriel Jesus, and lets players run at him 1v1 by backing off. Cant take advantage of his height on corners. Everytime he comes for a ball i wish he ducks and leaves it to Ramos or Casemiro who actually know how to place a header where they want it

Spare me the bullshit. Ramos has elevated this guy to heights he can't even imagine. Ramos would make Nacho look world class nevermind Varane

There aren't any cheap CBs available but I'd try my luck with Militao.

atalanta are no pushover - only concern with atalanta is if they played like against PSG for 70 mins..
atalanta should just play their own game attacking rigorously regardless of risks ... they didnt last time and stayed ultra conservative until the very last minute

I really feel a lot of Madrid fans have forgotten about this. Ramos is awesome now, the defender I wanted since, I don't know, 2007. But for years Varane has been legit covering up Ramos' crazy fking ways.

Nowadays, Varane is playing at a Calamity Jones level. The talent is very much still there buuuut yeah, rotten ass form. Also, not a few bad months, it's been 2 seasons now of rotten ass form.

Atalanta are a better away team anyway. If they miraculously hold out to a draw or even a narrow loss, I'd still give them a chance to qualify. Anything beyond that and it's gonna be way out of their reach.

Believe me, I'm not complaining, but it sure does look pretty harsh to me. I watched the clip again, and he wasn't the last man, the other Atalanta defender was clearly ahead of the ball as well.

Denying a goalscoring opportunity? Maybe. But is it really a straight red? I can't really say I agree.

The other defender was no where near mendy, casually jogging and the direction the ball is going he was definitely not going to close mendy down.

I'm not trying to troll you guys I definitely believe it is a red. A yellow would've been very soft in my opinion. It was a tough quick decision to make and I believe the ref got it right

You may be right. It was a very tough decision to make, but hopefully now with a man down, Madrid will take advantage of it and score some away goals.
