Which two team will progress ?
Re: Champions League 2020/21 | Group B
One thing I’ve noticed in Varane ever since joined us, is that his form doesn’t really fluctuate much. At his best, he’s very solid. Composed, deals with incoming trouble without looking too flashy, save for his rare, speedy runs.
At his worst, his timing and positioning are often poor, and he tends to struggle with dealing with even simple threats. His trademark composure seems to just vanish for no apparent reason. But he’s not inconsistent in the traditional sense of the word. When he’s been poor, he’s typically been poor for weeks at a time, and our RM section has been quick to question his general ability.
When he’s good, I think he rarely showcases exceptional ability at anything, but he looks sustainably solid and no one complains. I personally think he’s been mostly very reliable throughout his time with us, if hardly ever an amazing performer.
I can appreciate players who do their job without being flashy about it. However, I feel like he’s got two gears, and when he shifts into the lower one, he stays there for a while. I expect it to be the same this time around. Once he starts performing up to standard again, we probably won’t see this lesser version of him for the remainder of the season.
That’s how I’ve observed him, ever since he had his first patch of poor performances for us. I hope I’m right about this, and he’s not actually started declining at 27 years of age, which I doubt is the case. I don’t honestly agree with the notion that Ramos has always made him look good. I still remember matches under Mourinho where Varane expertly provided cover for Ramos, who was constantly caught out of position.

Agree for a tie mate
My table reports that we need of 1 point against Real and 6 against Shaktar and Borussia Monchengladbach for going on

The thing with Varane is that he fell victim of his own vanity. Instead of trying to displace Pepe through hard work and humility, he chose to bully the club into giving him a starting role even though he didn't do anything to justify it.

The worst thing is, Ramos is nearly 35 and we all know Perez is an ageist. He'll get max 1 perhaps 2 year extension after constant backlash from the fans. After that we'll be looking for Varane to steer the backline. FML, kill me now!!

I agree with the notion that Varane has fallen off and for quite some time now and I love Ramos, as always. But to say Ramos is who supports him in defence is utter nonsense Ramos is not, and never will be a good defender, nor has been (bar his early RB days).

Ramos is actually a very good defender. What he lacks in defending, he makes up for it with insane leadership and powerful presence.
Without him, Varane is like a lost kitten. He sucks already even with Ramos around, but I have seen him play without Ramos and it was a sad sight to behold.
So yes, Hala is completely spot on there.

Re: Champions League 2020/21 | Group B
Ramos will forever be a legend in my eyes and a favourite but I cannot classify him as a good defender, if we are speaking of the bare fundamentals. The system he is in and the midfield in front of him too, protects him well. He is not malleable in adapting to any other system.
If we are speaking as a whole then of course he is very good in defending per say because his leadership in the backline influences the whole backline not to much your mentioned presence of him, provides confidence.
Varane lacks any of the two attributes you mentioned and in my eyes just failed to evolve into what we all expected him to be.

I'm not sure he's wrong. They fit each other really well. Varane has been a horror show in CL since the City game though. And those games were without Ramos.

Ramos can play with any CB and they'll look WC. Case in point Nacho. Varane without Ramos is Sevilla level

Shame we were also playing good before that incredible mistake by Hakimi that causes 1-0. As always we bottle it
Forced to play with Perisic as SS because Lukaku is broken and Sanchez isn't fit ( he was injured too ).. We should to try to keep this result for half of 2nd time and then trusting in Sanchez when he enters pitch ... Not optimistic anyway, we' re going to lose it
