Re: The 20/21 Season
Yea Jay is right. Arteta wouldn't go straight to a 4-4-2. Interesting anyways, let's see how Eddie does in the Auba role.
We need to put 4 past them in either case

Re: The 20/21 Season
Shite once again going forward.
Pepe gets the ball and coughs it up a second later. Lacazette cannot hold the ball up surrounded by defenders. Nketiah is a ghost on the flank.
Nobody moves. Nobody links-up. It's so damn boring to watch.

Do u still think this is a 3-4-3??? Given the position of Kolasinac?

Re: The 20/21 Season
Yes. Always check the defensive shape for whatever formation a team is actually playing. Arsenal are defending in a 5-4-1, attacking in a 4-3-3 with Saka going inside and Kolasinac going wide. The usual stuff, just with different players.
Also note how in the final third, it's Saka going wide left like a conventional wing-back and Nketiah going inside. Kolasinac doesn't go too far forward to guard against counters.

This ref is 100% sending one of our players off btw.
Some of the yellows he handed were lol worthy. Guy clearly wants to be the star.

Re: The 20/21 Season
When our only option of taking a ball up the center of the pitch is a long ball from our defense over the top hoping that someone can run under it. Not really sure what you expect our CF to do. Then when they attack they run right up the center with it being open with us packing the sides.

Agree, I will be amazed if we do not finish a man down.

Set-piece get us level.
The team's woken up and is actually playing with some balls now.

The last point is not talked as often, the players just refuse to fucking move at times. No one pulls away, no one runs behind, no one comes for the ball, they are only worried about the damn shape.
Add to the fact that everytime they get the ball, they look to pass it back. No one takes on opposition players. Get ball to feet, pass wide, get blocked, pass back.
Pepe for some reason has forgotten how to dribble.

Re: The 20/21 Season
Since Rapid's goal, the team has shown more attacking ambition. Don't know why it's taken so long but now players are running with the ball, making runs behind, playing the ball in behind, etc.
This sort of direct attacking play suits this squad better than attempting to open teams up with clever passing and movement.

Well Nketiah on the wing wasn't a good idea to start with I guess. Is AMN on the bench? How many subs are allowed in EL?

Re: The 20/21 Season
See? When they finally start to fucking run and move, it becomes unstoppable.
Its surprising how poor Arteta's Arsenal has been poor going forward, especially considering how smooth they were at the start of his reign (that first half last season at Palace comes to mind)
I know they have gotten more defensive, but its like they forgot to link up and run

Clever passing still requires the others to move around and pull defenders from their deep block

Re: The 20/21 Season
Partey, Gabriel, Elneny and Luiz had strong games. Bar Leno cocking up a few passes, the core of the team did a good job.
The attacking problems are a huge concern, though, because even against so called weaker teams, we don't create enough chances.
I maintain the issue is with the wing-backs. A 3ATB system needs those wing-backs to either play high and wide for structure, or penetrate. But Arteta likes his wing-backs going inside and moving into the half-spaces, while moving the wingers out wide for width. Problem is there's nobody in the centre space for the wing-backs to connect with when they go inside. In addition, a player like Cedric is not going to offer much quality in those spaces in comparison to Pepe or Willian.
Bellerin made a difference when he came on because he attacked space. Cedric is like a classic full back who wants to cross from deep. He doesn't provide enough attacking threat to be a RWB.
On the other side, Saka plays narrow so Tierney or Kolasinac can attack the left flank, but teams have gotten wise to this recently.
In general, there's not enough risk taking on the ball. If a deep block isn't coming out, you can disrupt the shape with dribbling because it commits defenders. There's too much "oh no, there's no space in behind, better pass backwards or else we'll lose possession" going on. Don't know if it's the players or Arteta discouraging that because our defence is weak.

Its got to be Arteta, no way he would let them be like this.
He also needs to stop telling the right wing back to come in and winger to go wide. Why not interchange? They have patterns and stick to it, even when its not working out. Its like they sacrifice being footballers to make sure the defense doesn't mess up.

THIS! This has to be THE MOST frustrating thing about watching Arsenal the last few weeks.
AnJl wrote:Its like they sacrifice being footballers to make sure the defense doesn't mess up.
I too think there is a deeply ingrained fear of conceding, because our defense has been shite for years. That's why a 1-0 loss feels like a decent compromise, rather than having to watch another 8-2 or 6-1
