i genuinely believe if there's one thing that might detriment Arteta's Project it's the team system in relation to his personnel.

He needs to get it right and be flexible, can't be stubborn like Pep. First of all needs to get the players in he wants, and throw away that back 3 idea, our midfield was non-existent last night

It is obvious that he's adapted the system to what he has at hand. It worked fine for a cup run, but would have serious concerns over a PL season - eg. against teams that don't press and sit back to block in midfield.

Our second half improved markedly. I said it at the start - Xhaka-Elneny against Liverpool with the system we played was inexplicable for me, and the first half showed that.

I also think the players on the left were a bit confused in the first half. Tierney was skinned by Mo Salah (/TAA) and AMN was playing some hybrid LWB/LCM role doing neither well enough.

We also try to pass out of the back - quite risky against a high press, but we seem to do it ok. But it was obvious that it would come from our left, with Tierney hugging the line, because Holding is more limited in that skillset. But we risk becoming a one-trick pony doing that much longer - matter of time before it is tactically addressed by the opposition. And we have no plan B then.

That said, there were so many defensive errors leading up to their goals, it wasn't even funny. Arteta's resilient Arsenal should be ironing out these over time.

agree with all you said Sri
the defensive errors were as a result because of our nerves and lapses of concentration, not so much the conservative system. Conceding right after we score, how many times have we seen that in the last year? so infuriating and soft, why don't we ever learn from our mistakes.

And yes, we will indeed become a one trick pony the longer Arteta insists with the current gameplan.

Team selection may not have been perfect but we lost away to the reigning champions (who treat most sides like a play thing on their grounds) after a run of good results against the top sides over the past few months.

Surprised at the overreaction online. We had a few chances to take the lead and looked good for at least a draw in the second half.

Progress, perspective, patience, Partey.

It's disheartening to watch us play like that even if you understand the reasons. Two touches in Liverpool's box in the first half, hardly any shots throughout the game, etc. Did you know we have as few shots in the league so far as West Brom, a newly promoted side playing 5-4-1?

You compare last night's performance to Leeds' and it's hard not be concerned. A newly promoted side showed far more courage and invention than us on the ball. My biggest complaint of Arteta's management so far is that when it comes to attacking, committing players forward, etc. we're too meek. Too scared of conceding space and getting caught, even against so-called weaker teams.

Away to Pool you understand it but it happened at home to West Ham, too, and we could have easily lost that game.

As much as we're limited by our players there are times we have to go for it for more. If we continue being so shot shy you can forget about top six, nevermind top four.

Also it's not a problem with the formation. Atalanta and Inter played 3ATB systems last season and both scored 90+ goals in all comps.

Difference is those teams play with their wing-backs super high while Arsenal don't.

I know the Leeds performance is an obvious reference to compare last night's performance to but we're running into the same problems with the same exact personnel. Bielsa has had more than two years to shape Leeds and get them tactically familiar enough to play that way. Not saying Leeds are at a level we should aspire to play like - that will show with time - but we all knew how much work this team would need.

Ceballos coming on and instantly looking 10x more agile than Xhaka and Elneny to maneuver through what was an insanely effective Liverpool press made his absence even more confusing. I also agree about how shot-shy and uninspired we tend to look.

BUT, by all accounts, our we're going into the last week of the window with most of the players we wanted cleared still on the books and our top two targets still being haggled over.

I'd like to see where this team is with the likes of Aouar/Partey onboard, Gabriel/Saliba more involved. I think with time they'll allow the players ahead of them to move the ball with more confidence and be a bit more flexible.

re your last point: I would be incredibly uncomfortable watching AMN that high up the pitch given how loose he is with the ball in the final third. I like the runs we're seeing from Bellerin lately, I don't think we're at a level where we can afford to press high up the pitch without paying dearly in midfield and with the 3 CBs we fielded yesterday against the best pressing unit in Europe.

The 20/21 Season - Page 7 Empty Re: The 20/21 Season

Biggest issue I see with Arsenal has been the same one that's plagued Tottenham since Dembele left and the center of the park became Winks-Sissoko. It got exacerbated when Eriksen left as well because the guy is a brilliant midfielder. The Tottenham midfield lacked any sort of dynamism. That's what I see with Arsenal's midfield.

Xhaka isn't a bad player, but I've said for years that I don't think he's good enough for Arsenal. Elneny is just OK. He shouldn't be starting (and he isn't). He's a shit Khedira. Torreira is a hound in the midfield, but when the press is on, Torreira isn't who I want to see bringing the ball up.

Beyond Ceballos, who else is there? Ozil is class but is more interested in fortnite. Saka, Willian, and AMN are not CM's and don't play like them either.

The team lacks a midfield beyond Ceballos and that's why his presence is immediately felt whenever he plays. I think Arsenal need multiple midfield signings. Guys who can pass quickly, who can use their body to feint past a player, who can dribble a player and pass it off, or who can pass between the lines. The more of those qualities, the better. Arsenal's midfield is just disgustingly one dimensional, and it really limits the way that they can play. I watch both North London teams and it's really the same issue.

Outside backs are also not good enough imo

I guess Arteta has a lot more to learn. Specially about in-game management

Anyways, we really really do need Aouar and Partey. Both not just one.

After reading through, I guess I'm not saying anything new. Y'all know the problem. Hopefully you're able to fix it

City at home on the week of Dec 21st. So that's Everton (A), City (H) and Chelsea (H) in a row. Laughing

Liverpool should have won tonight in 90 minutes on the balance of chances. We played with more ambition but still struggled to convert our possession into meaningful shots.

AMN is the best casual pen taker I've ever seen tbh.
