Re: 2020 US presidential election
With the election 3 months away, corona showing every sign of a real 2nd wave come september, and states re-closing it's tough to see how Trump takes this.
The real challenge has now become the lower seats and, particularly, the Senate.
Rumors of Warren moving to Treasury, which would ruffle so many jimmies it would be worth it just for that.

"The Democrats are purposely keeping their schools closed, keeping their states closed. I called Michigan. I want to have a big rally in Michigan. Do you know we're not allowed to have a rally in Michigan?"
"We won two world wars. Two beautiful world wars, that were vicious and horrible"
Was it said by the president or a 5-year-old? A new game.

Leftists are mad that Biden has such a broad appeal that he has brought in moderate democrats to the party. Umm... ok?
Prioritizing purity tests over winning is exactly how you do not win elections
Also find it funny that leftists spent the primary arguing that there were no more "moderate" voters and now that seems to have been proven false as people switch parties.

Re: 2020 US presidential election
Rep. Karen Bass, a leading contender to be Joe Biden’s running mate, heaped praise on the Church of Scientology at a 2010 ribbon-cutting ceremony for a Los Angeles facility https://t.co/IaNucRpzrh
— The Daily Beast (@thedailybeast) July 31, 2020
She had emerged as a strong contender for the VP spot in the last week or so. I think that's over now. The Church of Scientology is one the largest cults around and are responsible for ruining many lives. Can't praise them and be the VP.
I think it's between Susan Rice and Kamala Harris, with Harris the clear front runner.
For me, I really like Rice as the pick given her background though it would be a weird one given she's not a politician.
Honestly, I just want Harris to be the VP so we can dunk on Trump again for donating to her campaign back in 2014.

Re: 2020 US presidential election
Lots of news recently about how Harris is too ambitious to be his running VP. She must be close to getting it if people are going public with it.
Would be cool with Rice but not sure how smart it would be for Biden to put Benghazi on the table

BREAKING: Joe Biden picks California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate, making her the first Black woman on a major party presidential ticket. Harris, a 55-year-old first-term senator, is one of the party's most prominent figures. https://t.co/HAelD4v2ZH

Re: 2020 US presidential election
Ultimately unsurprising. Solid pick though she will have detractors on the left from a criminal justice perspective and by virtue of being a woman of color, Democrat and representing California, she will be a target for the right. She's tough though. Very tough. I love her chances against Pence in the debates.

Yup, they're usually snoozefests, but this year's will be extra spicy. Harris is as sharp as they come and Pence is an empty suit masquerading as a VP.

Kamala Harris made a career in keeping the corrupt and criminals out of jail, and keeping the innocence in.
But that doesn’t matter.

Cool. I'll watch it
I don't know why they describe her as black though, she's jamaican/indian.
On her wiki she is described as an "African-american" but she's not african???

Her record as a prosecutor is her biggest weakness, for sure. Tulsi Gabbard exposed it effectively during the primary, which sent her campaign into a tailspin. Pence is an empty suit, but the man knows his way around oppo research. I expect him to pick up where Gabbard left off.
For me, I personally would've preferred Biden pick Rice, but meh.

I mean Black Jamaicans, such as Harris' dad, are descendents of African slaves brought to Jamaica by the British as part of the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade. Many trace their ancestry back to Southeast Africa and West Africa. So in that direct sense, Harris' father is not only black, he's likely of African descent, like virtually all black Jamaicans. This is where she can claim African heritage. It's not as direct as Obama (who had a Kenyan father), but the link is arguably there.

Re: 2020 US presidential election
I'm happy with the choice.
You can say what you want about Biden, but Biden/Harris is a pretty strong ticket, all things considered. You have the enormously well liked former VP who has been around DC for his entire life, and a woman who has been one of the up and coming Democratic politicians for year who made a run at being President this year.
Now, her candidacy was ultimately a failure, but I personally don't think it was for reasons that would make her a bad choice of VP. I think she had difficulty with messaging and carving out what she stood for. As VP, she has an easy message: parrot what Biden is all about and (if we're being honest), what the DNC wants. When it comes to her personality, competence, and overall record, she's generally well liked and seen as extremely competent. Her record on criminal justice is an open question mark and always will be, but if there was ever a time to put two Dems like Biden/Harris on the ticket, it's right now. Trump and Republicans have failed so badly with black Americans and racial justice that two individuals who have...ermm, very checkered pasts with racial justice will always appear on the right side of the issue. They don't have to worry about attacks from the left at this point either. Or not many
Anyway, with a coherent message behind her, I can see Kamala being an impressive VP candidate. McLewis is right. She's a tough individual.

Re: 2020 US presidential election
Her campaign was a failure because she's not a great campaigner, or hasn't been in the primaries. She's wooden and underwhelming when she makes speeeches or gives out her talking points IMO, and also doesn't seem to stand for political principle very much.
I like her as a person, she's nice and endearing when she speaks naturally, and that's a big plus for a woman candidate, as a politician I consider her to be a pure establishmentalist.
I do think of all the possible candidates, she might in the mind of the voters tick the box of 'can take over as president' the most, which I think with Biden having one foot in the retirement home and the other one in the grave, is a very important aspect for voters this time around.
Was the obvious pick, broken to you on GL via the Intercept many weeks ago.

Right, makes sense. Didnt know that the largest group in Jamaica is of sub-saharan descent, pardon my ignorance.

Re: 2020 US presidential election
It's obvious that Biden had to pick a black woman for VP, can you imagine the outrage if he went with an old white lady instead?
Still he had plenty of good choices to choose from that he should not be accused of tokenism. Harris and Rice are both very good options, with the CV required to step in if necessary (which is a concern for most Biden voters).
Kamala is 'safer' in the sense that she brings in less baggage than Rice and has campaign and legislation experience. Pretty much the only thing that people complain about Harris is that she was "tough on crime" and against weed earlier in her career, which describes nearly 90% of AGs in the US even today.
Appeasing progressives is pointless, they showed in the primaries that the progressive movement is much smaller than it was even in 2016. I bet progressives would even crucify Warren for sharing a ticket with Biden, and the old sexist remarks by Bernie Bros would come back.
Overall I think Harris is a predictable, boring, competent choice, which kinda describes Biden as well. And I think after 4 years of crazy the American people want politics to go back to being predictable, boring and competent, so that's a virtue in Biden's book.

I expect Biden to make Rice, the Barr replacement plus most if not all of the candidates to have cabinet roles. I think this will be a transformation government.

Rice would probably get the National Security Advisor role, just as she was under Obama.
I see someone like Sally Yates or Tish James getting the nod for Attorney General to replace Barr.
