What is happening in the US is gonna happen in Europe.

Up to them to decide if they want to follow us or not. Kinda funny now that we're in the position to show THEM what is going to happen next instead of the other way around... but in some ways the virus is predictable and we opened up first

Nope, it won't, maybe just in the UK, for they seem to be as incompetent as the USA in that matter. You might have some of the most skilled specialists in the field but their work goes in vain due to the overall uncoordinated response and lack of political effort to direct people for their own good. There're local hotspots with local lockdowns sometimes but it's managable. The point is the first wave in the USA was still going when everything opened up. Smaller local outbreaks are managable, only a vaccine will get rid of it for good.
The rising number of the infected in the USA is mostly the young folks (spring break, festivities, demos) so I except lower mortality rates but a hell lot more busy ICUs.

We'll see. I don't doubt that mask compliance and government will be stronger in Europe, and they're starting from a better place.

Not sure if that is enough though. We'll find out

Despite the decrease in infections, overall, the infection rate here has recently increased in 2 districts. Both sources were traced back to primary/elementary schools. I, for one, am glad we shut down the schools up until recently.

seriously the highest bidder gets the first should stop it will one way or another affect everyone anyway - i am ok with how it is set up so far that companies plan to release distributions if approved equally - and going first amongst the first responders and medical workers

dunno how much there is truth in it but was curious.

Leicester locked down due to a surge in infections. 3,216 cases in the City since the start of the pandemic; 944 of those were in the last two weeks.

Gov were alerted about the situation 11 days ago. Did nothing, as per usual. Neutral

No one knows yet what caused the spike.

The West has become too dependent and close to China. Are cheap products made with cheap labour really worth all the negative things about China? Even without exporting global pandemics, China is terrible on human rights, aggressive border policies, respecting intellectual property rights, democracy... The West is being taken for a ride by China.

See how multiple big companies bended over backward after the Hong Kong debacle and did their hardest not to offend the Chinese government...

Its not just China, despite all the outrage over Khasshogi's death, how many governments cut their ties with Saudi? The weapons deal is too valuable .

To be clear for people who didn't read the article: the flu strain has been found in pigs but hasn't made any sort of jump to human transmission as of yet. They're monitoring it.

This is complete speculation on my part now: I'm willing to bet they probably find a flu like this every year and "monitor" it, and it never makes the jump (for a variety of reasons). This grabs headlines because it could "be another coronavirus!", but I'm guessing this isn't out of the norm. Like I said though, I'm speculating and I could be completely wrong. Let's not forget that the 2009 swine flue pandemic (which began in America) was...11 years ago.

And while antibody tests found swine workers in China have had it in the past, there’s no evidence yet that it’s particularly deadly.

It has now become a common trend for viruses to emerge from China, and the world must do something to stop it because China is clearly failing to do it.

As you've pointed it out, there are many things seriously wrong going on in that country, and if the rest of the world continues to turn a blind eye to it, infectious diseases and other problems will continue to come out of it. Something must be done and quickly.

Your article makes it clear that it seems pretty well under control. Gotta say there is no other country right now I'd rather have a potential flu occur.

Fauci assumes the virus has mutated to be more infectious. Whether it's good (less lethality) or bad (same lethality but more infectious) ist left open.

So reading around, this doesn't seem to be a new strain per se, but one that's existed since April and is now becoming more dominant globally.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/07/200702144054.htm

Also, it doesn't seem to be more or less deadly at this stage:

Fortunately, "the clinical data in this paper from Sheffield showed that even though patients with the new G virus carried more copies of the virus than patients infected with D, there wasn't a corresponding increase in the severity of illness," said Saphire, who leads the Gates Foundation-supported Coronavirus Immunotherapy Consortium (CoVIC).

I think the lower mortality rates (at least in the US) can be mostly attributed from the virus moving on from nursing homes to younger active people

Haven't been here a while.

Don't know what the situation is around the world, but our department is maxed out, every bed we have is full and we're taking over other departments so we can cope with the new arrivals.

It is at least twice as bad compared to the worst point of the first wave.

My wife tested positive unfortunately. I am still negative. We work ridiculous shifts, so no surprise. Especially her, who at one point worked 22 hours, went to sleep for 2, then worked another 22, slept for 2, then another 7 hours of work. Then she got fever and tested positive.

At least we get some rest now at home, as we are quarantined.
