I have lived my entire life not having known this. I am having a headache right now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthright_citizenship_in_the_United_States
You can get a passport through your birth certificate, as long as it has the following:
Issued by the city, county, or state of birth
Lists your full name, date of birth, and place of birth
Lists your parent(s)' full names
Has the date filed with registrar's office (must be within one year of birth)
Has the registrar's signature
Has the seal of the issuing authority
https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport/outside-us.html
This sounds troublesome but I don't really know what it means. Did your parents go to this registrar dany?
I'm invested in this story now

Re: Who will be the Democrats' presidential candidate against Trump?
Off a phone call with my mom, yes my birth was registered. On the certificate of birth it says 5 days after I was born. My parents were a little shocked too, but BC's wiki page seems clear.
I always knew I could get a US citizenship because of my place of birth and vote etc but I am in quite a shocked state to know I'm automatically a citizen without having applied for it. I don't feel American at all.

Don’t get your hopes up! As long as Trump is in power he will do whatever to shut latinos out.

I'm probably just as white as Unique tbh although on my birth certificate it says Spanish origin. Things you learn about yourself every day.futbol_bill wrote:Don’t get your hopes up! As long as Trump is in power he will do whatever to shut latinos out.
Thanks, I believe it when I see it.elitedam wrote:This is amazing! Congrats, dany!

Were you born in the US?
Then you are an American citizen
This is fantastic lmao
you need to assert this right now. Go talk to a lawyer on how to go about obtaining a passport

Thing is I also don't have an address in the US. I was born in Florida, does that mean I can vote for Florida?
Where do you live? Buenos Aires right? In the primaries, there's the category "Americans abroad" (Bernie won it ) and I'm pretty certain that's also possible for the general election
Ususally, you would be able to vote in a American embassy/consulate

Re: Who will be the Democrats' presidential candidate against Trump?
The thing is, I'm not American in my ideologies and upbringing at all. Part of the reason I didn't really care about this whole citizenship is cause my family had stayed away from it.
If anything my parents are very anti-US policy. They were both members of the socialist party at university in Argentina and stopped going to US 15 years ago altogether, with their green cards expired because of that. It was a costly endeavour anyway as they had to fly to US every year to renew it.

Re: Who will be the Democrats' presidential candidate against Trump?
I've actually never lived in Argentina, although we go there pretty much every Christmas and some summers but I tend to avoid summers as it gets cold and that's the last place you want to go to if you live in Europe.Hapless_Hans wrote:Where do you live? Yeah Sports lives in NYC, I think.
Congrats, Danyjr. The last couple of pages have been a hell of a read. Enthralling stuff. Can't imagine connecting the citizenship dots on a football forum like that.
Oh and you're not alone in being born here, but being culturally more worldly. That's the experience of pretty much all people who come here from somewhere else. It's what makes us a melting pot. I love it personally.

Re: Who will be the Democrats' presidential candidate against Trump?
I think "more wordly" is an overestimate Although I have studied the history of Americas extensively, I don't understand spring break, don't follow basketball, no idea how American football and baseball work. Never celebrated 4th of July, nor thanksgiving. Every time I've been to the States I've been a total foreigner. You know that guy that stands out like a sore thumb? That's me.
I don't feel American at all, even though I am, apparently.

What does feeling American even mean?
You're talking about an identity that spans from the beaches of Hawaii, to the glaciers of Alaska.
If you've ever stood up to a bully; thats America.
If you've ever excelled at a thing; thats America.
If you've ever showed up to a party just as it was ending; thats America.
Congrats, you won the lottery at birth.
I sure hope you are a friend of liberty.
