Of course they're trying to make money lol.
If a writer releases extensive articles on a subject which took actual work they should be paid for it.
I really don't understand this attitude, it's not how the world works.
Right.....
Just like how Musicians should have their music downloaded for free etc etc.
People have got free stuff illegally for so long they've lost all concept of reality. If any professional works hard on something that people use they should be paid for it.
You'll likely realize this one day if you ever make something which people use and exploit it without compensating you.

There's doing things for money, and then there's doing things out of interest and passion. That was the difference I was pointing out.

Interest and passion doesn't pay the bills or put a roof over your head, I'm sure the people that do it are passionate about it but they need to be paid too.

^^If you are so adamant on that being your only source of income, then yea of course. All I'm saying, it doesn't really need to be that way for some.
Also artistic property rights are in a totally different ball park from intellectual property rights. "Intellectual property" is basically just information that gets zapped up by the internet in this day and age, and we can all find access to it somehow, somewhere down the line, because as I said there will be paraphrasers who do not place a money tag on the content.

Imagine comparing football journalists to musicians
But tbh if you need some clowns to explain football to you go ahead and pay even though you could pay us instead, quality is probably a lot better

Well yea there's different ways of applying a business model.
This is just one form, but for the reasons Jay mentioned it means the quality is much higher.
It's up to the person to decide whether they're ok with that, i just disagree with the notion they shouldn't be paid for it.
Anyway I'm not trying to convince anyway, just explaining why i disagree with your take.

Don't take anything i say at face value, it was just an example of why i believe if somebody works hard on something at a professional level which people use they should be paid for it in any work field.

Jay29 wrote:Great Leader Sprucenuce wrote:Did you read the Sam Lee and Michael Cox article on City's defence Jay?
I found that really interesting.
Yeah, just read it. Shows that Pep is a far more adaptable coach than he's usually given credit for.
Also shows that it's not something that can be replicated throughout the league, because finding players who are creative yet also super hard-working is tough. Even Liverpool's midfield is more industrious than creative.
It's funny, when you think about it. Pep's teams sparked this movement towards more attacking set-ups, more emphasis on possession and creativity etc, but at the moment the successful teams are the ones with the hardest workers and best defences.
Always said that Pep was the best defensive coach in football.
His teams regularly conceded less goals than Mourinho's.

Re: 2019/2020 Premier League Discussion: Prologue
Writing is art, too, so I don't see what's wrong with the comparison.
An online sports publication's potential revenue streams are limited, with pros and cons to each:
1) Ad revenue, gained by attracting x amount of visitors to a page loaded with ads. Pros: No limit on potential earnings, rewarding for high numbers of traffic, free on the consumer end. Cons: Fluctuates heavily depending on demand and subject, cash-to-visitor rate varies. I worked with a publication that used this model. One month we'd bring in £10,000, the next barely a £1,000.
2) Sponsorship/associate links. Making articles with specific links to websites, and being paid a flat rate to essentially direct traffic to other sites. Pros: Consistent revenue, decently reliable. Cons: Content has to be shaped around sponsor (typically gambling), low rates, still traffic dependent (associate site ain't paying up if their site isn't getting the numbers).
3) Subscriptions. Flat payment over time for limited or exclusive content. Pros: Consistent rate of income, rewards quality, can control price. Cons: Consumers have to pay, need to be convinced it's value for money.
4) Donations. People give whatever money they feel like, to Patreon or Kickstarter and so on. Pros: Consumer has control over how much they spend, can receive perks. Cons: Inconsistent, might be tough to hit sustainable numbers.
And the content they create varies on the model, too. You wouldn't write that tactics article if your revenue comes from ads. Equally, you wouldn't throw out trashy news stories if you're sub/donation based.
In all cases, people taking content from sites is damaging to the business. Ad-based sites need the visit otherwise they don't get revenue, and it defeats the purpose of a paywall to have content being shared about for nothing. Hence, I'm not going to be copying anything from The Athletic or any other paid-for service.

Re: 2019/2020 Premier League Discussion: Prologue
I get what you are saying Jay, but there's structured report writing such as writing for sports, about the entertainment industry, etc etc. Basically content writing. And I'm not saying this doesn't require skill, it does of course. But with the internet it can never pay that well anymore. The system for it is fucked basically, based on all the ways in which it makes money which you just listed and what I brought up about the ways of the internet being far bigger than paywalls, and trying to keep work exclusive.
And then there's artistic writing. Writing of pure inner creation, that comes from the human soul based on how the writer makes sense of philosophy and all the different aspects of human life and being human.

So did anyone actually pay for the Athletic? Should we set up a GL account?

Insanely hyped we're almost back. Gotta say, GL makes up a big part of my enjoyment for football nowadays. Hope the thread is active for the upcoming season.

My hype will probably last all of 2 gameweeks though when we're on 1 point and Pogba's out injured. Never been so sure of City winning the league as I am this season. Fight for 4th should be gud though.

In other news, the Premier League finally have an official Youtube channel and will be uploading post-match highlights after games this season.
They've just uploaded best goal comps for every season so far, too.
