"Cruijff" football hugely overrated
Can't defend a 3 goals lead even if their life depends on it. 2 days in a row
Can't win UCL without prime Mess-Xavi-Iniesta-Alves or prime MSN.
While everyone mocks the likes of Simeone and Allegri for their defensive football, at least they got to 4 finals with much lower resources.
This style looks great on the surface, but has huge pitfalls that people tend to ignore.
Makes Llorente and Wijnaldum look like prime Ibrahimovic

Re: "Cruijff" football hugely overrated
with a lot of respect, neither team plays "Cruyff football", even with my limited understanding of what it is, both teams are a poor iteration of the original model

Look at City too, 3 years in a row being eliminated because of huge defensive mistakes.

Re: "Cruijff" football hugely overrated
Can't go far in UCL with softies in defense, it's very obvious. Look at the teams that did well recently in CL, and their defenses:
Ramos, Varane, Godin, Jimenez, Chiellini, Van Dijk etc
Look at the Fergie team and how important was their defensive duo. Or Pools improvement since Kloppo bought Van Dijk.

No one is getting mad lol, it's not our fault you actually think Barca are anything like Cruyff football.
They play 442 ffs, if you don't like the responses maybe you should educate yourself.

Having a soft defense is one thing but Barca definitely doesn't practice Cruijffism under Valverde. They just suck when pressed. Ajax, probably they practice it but refer to the "having a soft defense" which has nothing to do with Cruijffism.

Ajax don't have more resources than Allegri and Simeone ever had and, in the end, that and dropping deep is why they lost.

Ok, on a serious note: they're obviously not that good as few years ago at this posession-attacking style, but they're still one of the best in the world at it. Liverpool is a different beast obviously, can't pass them like they do with lol-liga teams.
And their club identity, from academy to the main team is posession football

fair point, but having defenders primarily focused on build-up may come with a cost. Look at Blind for example. Destroyed by Llorente in 2019

Re: "Cruijff" football hugely overrated
i have learned more about football in the last few weeks than i have in years. it dont matter how you play or how good you are if you are under enough pressure you will fold. in the first legs liverpool and spurs folded under pressure. in the 2nd leg barca folded under pressure. when spurs had nothing to lose and went at ajax in the 2nd half they folded under the pressure.

They were 3-0 up, and conceded counter-attack, being completely exposed at the back. How does this make sense?
For your other point, agree. Hats of for what they did rest of the tournament but they were obviously punished from bringing foolishly this style to extreme when it wasn't needed in an UCL semi-final.

Yes, in champions league that's fundamental. And being all-around team as well is fundamental. Liverpool with Klopp are good at every phase of the game plus very physical. Zidane's Madrid was the balanced and pragmatical as well.
If you can't defend very well on crosses and long-balls, your whole football philosophy is useless in this competition

Re: "Cruijff" football hugely overrated
@unique i don't know if that's true. and if it is true then it means said players aren't that great to begin with. if you can only boss when odds are always in your favor, but you fold anytime pressure comes about , then it says a lot about your abilities as an athlete
there are teams that get faced with enormous pressure and don't fold. ajax are a relatively young side, they can be given a pass. but if you're only the boss when odds are always in your favor, and fold at any provocation/pressure there's nothing boss about that

That was the first goal, the other two happened while they were parking their bus.
It was the only style that worked for them and they were punished for missing too many of their chances.

Re: "Cruijff" football hugely overrated
tell me one team that dont fold under pressure. this season we played leicester at home and went 1-0 up and they went at us and put us under pressure and got a 1-1 draw. and last night we were 3-0 down v barca and went at them with high pressure and beat them 4-0. who are the better team leicester or barca.titosantill wrote:@unique i don't know if that's true. and if it is true then it means said players aren't that great to begin with. if you can only boss when odds are always in your favor, but you fold anytime pressure comes about , then it says a lot about your abilities as an athlete

@Adun
Well, first Spurs goal was vital, and completely unnecessary conceded.
And they didn't cocede the others because they "parked the bus". It was because they defended very badly at those plays. Moura looking like prime Messi in their box

Re: "Cruijff" football hugely overrated
ajax bossed spurs in the first leg and bossed them in the first half tonight. but as soon as spurs got the first goal they let the pressure get to them. not being hard on ajax because they are a young team but teams like PSG liverpool juve and barca have also folded under pressure this season. people say klopp is one of the best managers in the world and klopps way of playing is to put other teams under as much pressure as possible.
