The PS3 released for $499(€460) for the cheap kind when it came out back when I was in high school 14 years ago. I remember balking at the price. I never got one either. It made no sense when the cheapest xbox 360 could be had for like 200 dollars less....and that was expensive as hell for us. Looking back it was god's grace I got to game at all as a kid. It was/is a really expensive hobby. Especially before CD's became the norm. EB games/Funcoland(who turned into Gamespot) would literally rape the shit out of you for cartridges. Super Nintendo in particular had expensive games. I remember my dad loving batman and He paid like 70 bucks(which was A LOT in early 90's America) for Batman Returns on it. He had it in his dorm room, and he brought it to us when he graduated. That was probably the best Super Nintendo game ever.
They actually tried selling the PS3 for about $800 for a short period of time after the console was released here. If I remember correctly, Sony had only shipped a limited number of consoles to Europe, and some people were so desperate to get it that they actually paid 800 bucks for it.
Did that kill good will over there with Sony?
Like I know seeing 499 was enough for me to be happy with a 360 instead. Even when they dropped it down to 399 by the time i got to university in 2007/8.
Some people weren’t very happy with it, and I know a lot of people simply bought an Xbox, like you did. Many of those people «switched allegiance» and never bought a Playstation again, so yeah, I’d say it killed the good will for some. I was very busy with school and other things at the time. Even if I had bought it, I likely wouldn’t have had much time to actually play on it - so it didn’t bother me, personally. I waited until the summer after it’s initial release, and it was much cheaper then.

Re: PlayStation 5
GAME in UK are also registering people for PS5 but without any prices.
It makes no sense to do something like that now because there are way too many suppliers to meet the demand. If it is available to pre-order 99% of sites will guarantee release date delivery
Not a chance it will be anything over £500. I do think it will be pricey though. £429 maybe

Re: PlayStation 5
You cannot make a console with those specs cheap. I've a feeling Sony might lose money on the sales of PS5 but make it from games and stuff.

I don't know how many teraflops (lol) the PS5 has, but this is the sentiment I've heard from several technical-minded folks. One told me it was "the most exciting hardware in 20 years." Will be fascinating to see how it stacks up to the impressive Xbox Series X specs https://t.co/q7i0ET95Yq

Irrational hype?
Also the person he's quote tweeting is a Doom Eternal dev.

both of them will have mostly the same specs and be around the same price then everyone will buy a ps5 because the playstation exclusives line up will blow microsoft clean out of the water.

Re: PlayStation 5
Ah yes a PC where games like Bloodborne, Uncharted, Last of Us can't actually be played.
The get a PC crowd make me laugh, like the no 1 reason we buy a PS4/5 is because it has games we can't get anywhere else not the shiny box it comes in.

Re: PlayStation 5
You can actually play those 3 games on PS Now if hundreds of other titles that run better on PC don't fancy your schmancy.

Looks like Sony is changing its exclusivity policy though, Horizon Zero Down and Death Stranding are being released for PC and there are rumors that TLOU2 will come to PC at some point.

so i could pay £500 for a ps5 and get games on day one or pay £1500 for a gaming PC and wait 8 months for the game.Pedram wrote:Great Leader Sprucenuce wrote:Ah yes a PC where games like Bloodborne, Uncharted, Last of Us can't actually be played.

Re: PlayStation 5
I can guarantee you the next generation of consoles will cost above £500.
Also a gaming PC with a similar spec to Xbox Series X will cost you £750. You can upgrade it. You can use it for things other than gaming, like watching streams. And 99% of games are released on PC on the same day as consoles. PC is no longer a second grade platform, in fact a lot of big companies like Take-2 and Ubisoft make most of their dough on PC these days.
For me a PC is the no-brainer first choice, followed by a Nintendo console and then PlayStation (only for exclusives).

And I guarantee you that none of the consoles will be above 500 USD. Sony sold PS4 at a loss at first, they profited through software sales.

Re: PlayStation 5
was actually talking to someone earlier about cost of next gen, those XBOX specs are bonkers and seem like they'll force it to be above $500, which, historically, we know is a disaster. I'm genuinely curious what the prices of the next consoles will be, I know they've also taken losses on them in the past but these specs are whew. Pure speculation on my part but I'm not expecting PS5 to match XBOX.

Re: PlayStation 5
Guys it isn't 2000 anymore you know, ever heard of inflation? It is guarantee to cost more than the previous consoles. Games have gone up in price too.
Re: PlayStation 5
consoles will always out sell gaming pc because they appeal to a bigger market and the more of something you buy the cheaper it is so sony and microsoft will get components cheaper so thay can keep cost down. plus they wont build a console that prices most people out of buying one.danyjr wrote:Guys it isn't 2000 anymore you know, ever heard of inflation? Re: PlayStation 5
I know it has to do with how late I am with some PS4 games, yet it does feel like a console that is very much alive.
I'll surely get a ps5 but after the first drop, unless some GOAT game really blows me away that much.

Not really.
Horizon isn't selling anymore so that makes sense as they want to use it to sell a sequel.
Death Stranding was never an exclusive, Sony themselves have said they have no plans to change how they treat exclusive games.
