Wonder if Ronaldo's allegations will affect his chances of winning?

This award has always been in the shadow of Fifa player of the year. When they merged Ballon Dor was something special. but now again it became a scrub award. FIFA award is harder to win and only GOATs can win it

I don't see him winning this either TBH. The Ballon d'or is strictly voted by journalists only. If you look at the history of the Fifa Ballon d'or and specifically look at who the journalists voted for, you'd realize that journalists are the ones who have been trying to end the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly. If they never made the combined award, Sneijder would have won in 2010 and Ribery in 2013 looking at their votes.

Messi and CR only won those Ballon d'ors because of the votes of the players and coaches. So if those people are the reason they've dominated the award scene for the last decade, and they finally decided to vote for someone different in Modric, I think it's unlikely that journalists will oppose that and go for Messi or Cristiano ahead.

Judging by their recent voting history, Modric seems like the type of player they'll be voting for this year.

My vote goes to Karim Benzema. Carried his club to the last of 4 Champions League titles in recent years, and would have won the world cup this year, if not for his highly controversial omission. His Kuyt-like persistence and worker bee mentality earned him a rightful place among the nominees, and he deserves a lifetime achievement trophy for his impeccable FIFA stats. There's truly no other, more worthy recipient of this award, and hopefully this marks the point in time when even the Ballon D'or began to recognize defensive midfielders. Legend.

His selflessness is what separates him from the rest. He does everything in his power not to touch the ball and if, god forbid, he touches it, he immediately passes it to someone else.

And what about gentleness? Have you ever seen him being aggressive or trying too hard to win the ball back? No, because he's gentle. He doesn't want to hurt the opposition and cause them any injury of any kind. Some people confuse this for laziness and indifference, but it's gentleness in its purest form.

Benzema is the very definition of a superhero: invisible, selfless and caring. These are small acts of heroism that rarely attract any notice. I'm just glad he got the recognition he deserves for once

no he is not, Ballon d'Or is THE trophy to win. Messi and CR dont count or post pictures of their player of the year award.

there is a reason why even when it merged with Fifa, it was still called the ballon d'or. this is what Messi or CR want.

One of the most interesting list in recent years for sure, being a WC year full of upsets, and its good to see lots of names not on there just because of the name but for performance. Otherwise players like Mandzukic and Firminho wouldnt be there. Seeing Lloris there thought, so undeserved.

Mbappe must be not long way from winning it... was thinking if he wins the big award would they still give him that young player award? One player to win both would be funny.

Benzema won UCL and was an integral cog for Real Madrid throughout the tournament whilist making 5 UCL-goals in 9 games. Eliminated Bayern Munchen from SF and scored the opening goal in the final.

After all, Bale got nominated for scoring in CL final while scoring 1 goal in rest of the campaign.

These are just random lists.

They're so random.  Popularity contest mixed in with some FIFA additions (for WC).

These awards are a complete sham.

Varane does deserve it for sure. He's been head and shoulders better than Ramos in everything except scoring goals. But scoring goals is apparently the key factor in rating a CB these days. ALTHOUGH Varane scored a massive goal in the WC against Uruguay... not his thing though.

What's wrong with Varane's inclusion? I can't think of a more reliable defender, who performed to a high standard, both for his national team and club. If anything, he's an underappreciated rock of a defender. Sergio Ramos should count his lucky stars that he doesn't have to partner someone else.

Ronaldo the great. Surely he will win. Scrubs like modric dont deserve the reward.
