Ad Astra
2.5/5
What do you want to be? A space exploration film, or very clearly a profound allegory of a man's psyche trying to overcome his father's abandonment as a youngster?
In the end, it does not make an impact as either. An extra half a star for trying to be inventive on that front.

Phoenix is fantastic, should be in the running for best actor for sure. What a performance! The movie lives and dies by him.
you guys think judges/academies might shy away from giving the movie any big awards because of the big backlash it has received from some spheres of the media?
Considering Green Book won last year I think it only greatly enhances its chances.
The difference is that Joker is really good and Green Book is absolute trash
Yea mate, but most of the backlash came after it actually won because no one even thought that it would come close to winning
It was most probably the worst Academy decision made in the huge history of terrible Academy decisions

I actually liked the cinematographey in Ad Astra, El G
The movie felt like a book, long internal monologues and self introspections, i kinda actually enjoyed it personally, felt like a breath of fresh air.
Its unique is what im saying, and i appreciate that, even though the plot falls a little bit short
Sorry not reading any other posts as im going Joker tomorrow

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
It's the most frat bro drama in a long time. And some may see it in a bad way. But I don't.
I find it wild how hated it is by some people in US. For someone who often wanks about European and Asian cinema, American viewers seem awfully delicate in what they can handle lol.

rincon wrote:It's pretty amazing that Heath Ledger and Phoenix played the same character so well, and so differently, within a couple of years of each other.
To get to 2 totally different movies with the character played so successfully that both may get an oscar for it.
In a way, Phoenix's Joker works very well as a prequel to Heath's joker. You can see the transformation.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
Same
- Spoiler:
- As a big Batman freak i loved how they tied up some loose holes with the backstory, in the past we've basically been under the illusion Bruce's parents death was correlated to the Joker but it was never really mentioned directly.
While Joker wasn't directly responsible his actions did lead to the death of his parents here and i love that

- Spoiler:
- BTW as someone with mental health problems this film was more powerful than you could possibly imagine, there were several moments in this film were i felt how Joker felt in my live (obviously not as drastic and i never wanted to kill people lol)
But the whole journey was very powerful to see unfold

What's one really entertaining film for you which has a huge amount of plot holes?
The butterfly effect for me. I'll watch it every time it is on but man each scene feels like a plot hole lol.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
Joker 2.5/5
I'm not sure if I like this. Definitely not as much as some do. I admire Joaquin Phoenix's dedication to the role, but I don't even think it is anything outstanding overall performance wise.
Now don't get me entirely wrong, it is a well executed film and it definitely, DEFINITELY has its intentions in mind all the way through. I suppose you could say on one end it functions as a character study because every other character plays off as a side character to Arthur Fleck's psychological deterioration (or psychological breakthrough) towards Joker depending on what perspective you'd like to take. Social commentary wise it mostly hits the right spots as well as it wants to but obviously leans more to the end of extremities to get its point across.
However, from the overall film's point of view, perhaps you can even say the director's point of view - I do not sit content with the carelessly blanded-down mixture of the psychological struggles of Fleck, definitely a normal everyday man and not a marginalised clown, CNN, and that of the social commentary which decides to cloak itself in a origin story with linkage to Batman's origin story to eventually construct itself as a "nothingness" which eventually leads to that particular ending for the film (which didn't come as a surprise to me at all). But do not stress - I'm not in the "this will inspire the marginalised or incel culture towards violence" camp at all either, mainly because in my logical mind I see too many inconsistencies in the subject material, mainly the psychological issues, compared to how phenomena operate in the real world.
So where does Todd Phillips' Joker stand with me? Not anywhere much at all, to be honest, and I think going beyond the question of whether I like it or not, that exactly that is the biggest problem I have with the film - I believe I will not think much of it a week from now.

really? As a psychologist' in the making all i could see was careless one-dimensional exploitation of psychological issues. On the surface level, Phoenix's acting of psychological distress wasn't inaccurate, perhaps definitely extreme at some points, but like i said, how it was used for the film's actual point and ending was a mindless venture in my opinion.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
i need to reconsider how i give out my ratings actually, I'm way too lenient when it comes to a biggish movie to give it a respectable 3, sometimes even a 3.5, when it should actually be lower. Just because a film looks good (which a big studio film should) doesn't mean it should get extra points.
Thus i also edited my rating for Ad Astra above
