Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Mayans MC isn't too bad. First 2 episodes have been what I've expected: A continuation of Sutter's SOA style story-telling centered on a new golden boy at a new club. Great to see some cameos from SOA characters too.
Also - Binged Barry and I loved it. Hader and Winkler deserved those Emmys. Also gonna shout out Anthony Carrigan as well for another super funny villain role. Great follow up from his Gotham role.

Haven't gotten into this yet: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7134908/
but it has a couple of actors from Casa de Papel in cast and the premise seems promising.

Binged Jack Ryan. Solid 8/10 show. Great production value, performances, structure and pacing. Episodes felt like actual episodes with distinct arcs, climaxes, etc, which rarely happens in streaming dramas anymore. They made the Big Bad Terrorist into a believable character, although I wish they could have made him a little less black and white in the present-day storyline.

Felt the same.
The series was much better than the movie from a couple of years ago, well made, but still concerning the plot it's basically a propaganda piece.
Even 'Homeland' managed to move away from this 'American intelligence heroes hunt terrorist before he can attack' nonsense.
Interestingly, I watched a series with a very similar premise lately, "Condor", which also has CIA analyst as protagonist, and it was much, much better than Jack Ryan.
Better story, better suspense, better characters.
Can recommend it very much.

I see my boy Denver in the poster.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
I have no idea how anyone could watch Jack Ryan and call it pro western society. If anything it was a critique of how western civilisation creates their own enemies. And that terrorists aren’t the no faced monsters they’d like us to believe. They’re humans who’s suffered unimaginable horrors which has lead them to blinding hate. Thought that was the best part of the show.
After the French milf.
Also Abbie Cornish is absolutely horrible in everything.

Rio is also on the poster! Bottom right.
And next to Denver, there's Alison Parker, the 'most valuable hostage'.
Not sure if it's on there, I don't use Netflix.

Yeah agreed, also I think the show rewarded Jack for being "boy scout good" whereas in the real world that would hurt his effectiveness and career@Hapless_Hans wrote:@BarrileteCosmico wrote:Binged Jack Ryan. @BC
I'm not sure if he was entirely rewarded for being a boy-scout. I think he was critiqued for being a 100% boy scout and had to evolve.

- Spoiler:
- He got his entire platoon killed because of he was a boy scout. He let the brother terrorist slip away in Paris despite having a clear shot in a crowd, which might have cost some lives. He also almost cost them finding Hanin (the wife) because he wouldn't work with that Turkish criminal and would've beat him up and arrested him if not for Wendell Pierce's character stopping him.
In the end he evolved to not be an entirely good boy scout, but to compromise and do the right thing while still letting his morals guide him.
He finally took the shot in a crowded place in the end, which he couldn't have done earlier.

"He got his entire platoon killed because of he was a boy scout."
Yes, and he clearly struggles with that. That's true. But it's not clear to me that his career suffered for that, and his whole attempt at saving the Hanin's son this time tells me he learned very little from it (or chose to remain true to his principles in spite of it, if you prefer).
"He let the brother terrorist slip away in Paris despite having a clear shot in a crowd, which might have cost some lives."
His decision to not shoot directly contributed to the death of the French agent and he seemingly suffered no consequences or showed guilt about that
" He also almost cost them finding Hanin (the wife) because he wouldn't work with that Turkish criminal and would've beat him up and arrested him if not for Wendell Pierce's character stopping him."
But in the end he did get it. There was some tension but the turk put up with it.
"In the end he evolved to not be an entirely good boy scout, but to compromise and do the right thing while still letting his morals guide him. "
Where is this evidence of compromise? The closest he got to compromise was letting his boss do what his boss was going to do anyways while being very visibly disgruntled to the detriment of the mission
"He finally took the shot in a crowded place in the end, which he couldn't have done earlier. "
That's a fair point and clear character growth, although he shot up first to get a clear shot, so he kind of smarted his way around it

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
I know everyone has their own sense of humour and comedy that does it for them... but I am looking for something that I can bust my guts laughing to. Nothing cringy pls. I tried getting into The Office UK a year ago or so and it just didn't do it for me. I have been watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine periodically, and while it is nothing special because it really is so simple, I do enjoy the running gags and tight relationships which tend to make comedies good. But try to stay away from recommendations that kind of has that show's humour.
Might help to say that Archer is my favourite gut-busting laughter comedy of all-time.

This is probably a controversial opinion, but I prefer The Office US over the Office UK. I don't think it's close either.

If you‘ve not seen „It‘s Always Sunny in Philadelphia“ then I beg you and anyone else to start it. One of the funniest shows I‘ve ever seen. It‘s mostly made for the male 18-35 demographic so I wouldn‘t exactly recommend to everyone but god damn is it a funny show if you get into it.
Also The Office (US) is a classic. Parks and Rec after that.

Yesterday I binged "Sharp Objects". I am a bit sick, spending the days mostly in bed...and I was reading this thread and it got me curious and interested about this mini-series. Absolutely brilliant! Top performance by Amy as usual. Loved everything about it and I literally don't know what show should I watch next after this one. 10/10 for me, too underrated by the users on IMDb.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
For whatever reason, I keep comparing it to Dexter in some ways. Dark, comedic tone and the main characters basically have to lie to the people they care the most about about their true natures. Biggest difference is what drives them.
Barry surprised me though ,especially the later episodes of that season.
