Some explanations :-
Germany have knocked out Argentina several times. This has got to reverse soon. I would have liked to predict the same here but then I would have Argentina (and Messi) losing in the final to Brazil (and Neymar) which would mean Messi can never return to Argentina again.
The other alternative was to make Argentina champions but they just don't look good enough. I cannot see Messi this time be more of a demi god than he was in 2014 and lion heart Mascherano no longer has the legs he had then.
I want to see Messi meet Cristiano one on one which is what I have predicted and then knock him out of course.
On squad strength and individuals France are stronger than Spain but the latter are more of a team and I predict that this quarter final will be Iniesta's last ever great performance at the highest level of competition.
Portugal vs. Spain in the group stage will be a draw, say 1-1, but the former will score more goals and thus take top spot in the group.
I do not think that highly of France's defense and goal keeper but they perhaps have the opponents most incapable of scoring goals in the group stage.
This has Brazil 2002 written all over it. Struggling in qualification until a coaching appointment changes everything. Read Tite for Scolari. Huge doubts over star player's fitness but he returns just in time and is ready. Read Neymar for Ronaldo. Seeing the friendlies almost every big team is struggling except for Brazil. Last three world cups won by Europe. So South America this time. Brazil have the added motivation of thirsting for revenge for the 7-1 of last time which is more talked and unfairly seen as a greater humiliation than any team's group stage exit. If they meet Germany they just cannot lose again. One difference is that in 2002 Brazil became favorites only after their first match while this time they already are. At least they are not overwhelming favorites as in 1998 or 2006. So we'll let that be.
Iniesta's last match at top level is a 3rd place playoff against Messi's Argentina. I said I would prefer not to have to see these two compete against each other. In the eyes of Fifa this is a competitive match but in reality its just a glorified friendly. So these best of team mates say one final good bye to each other, both in tears at having come so far but not made the world cup final.
