Re: OFFICIAL : Unai Emery signs for Arsenal
Any coach who can get Arsenal defending as a cohesive unit will instantly improve them. In fact, I'd say the biggest difference between them and Spurs/Liverpool right now is off the ball.
Of all the things that declined under Wenger, the team's defending was the biggest. For years, he set the team up in a way that left so much space behind them and gave little consideration to how to protect that space. There was no high press (it only appeared in certain games, but not every game), nor was there a commitment to getting numbers behind the ball. So on every transition Arsenal were high, open and there for the taking.
That meant that most midfielders who played for the club looked awful in defence. Xhaka's not a great defender to begin with, but leaving him back with only two defenders as cover while teams break 4v3 on them makes it so much worse. Sometimes there wouldn't even be a DM. Both full backs would go up, and both CMs would go up leaving just two CBs back there. Balls over the top and down the sides to runners were easy for the opposition. As a result, the defenders also look like garbage because they have to cover more space than they should be and can be easily dragged all over the place. That Koscielny managed to look remotely decent most of the time is one the reasons we rated him so much.
Then factor in Arsenal's declining ability to retain possession, especially under pressure (because everyone but the two centre backs has been instructed to push up the pitch and mark themselves out of the build-up phase), and you see how these issues appear so often. Can't keep the ball > Lose ball > Ball gets played in vast amounts of space.
Emery needs to focus on this the most. The attack is mostly fine with the quality that's there. Back it up with better defending and we'll be up there again.

That’s the other thing- Arsenal’s biggest problem is defense and keeper. Is Emery the man to fix that? Surely, no.

Their midfield is a much bigger issue than their defence.

Re: OFFICIAL : Unai Emery signs for Arsenal
I'm not sure about that. Who of that backline + GK would you keep?
Cech- old, steep decline, error prone.
Kos- old, injured, steep decline
Monreal- solid, but old
Bellerin- inconsistent
Mustafi- incredibly inconsistent
Chambers- not good enough
Kolasinac- decent
Mavropanos- don't know enough about him yet
Bare minimum you have to replace Kos and Cech. I would replace Mustafi too, as I don't think he is nearly the quality you would need. They can hold out on Bellerin if they want, but he has been a liability.
The midfield at least has some players to hold on to. They just need the right manager find the right formula in the midfield. Possibly sign a DM type player in the mold of Kante

What are you basing that on, out of curiosity?
In terms of signings it's going to be a joint effort between Mislintat (head of recruitment, identifies the talent), Sanllehi (DoF, closes the deals), Fahmy (contract negotiator) and the head coach, Emery, who will have the right to veto signings he's not keen on.
All being well, Emery will get the players he needs to make his set-up work... which includes strengthening the defence.

I have watched Emery quite a lot at Valencia, Sevilla and PSG. He is good at organizing the offensive side of things while neglecting the defense. Since defense is the area with the greatest need of improvement (IMO), one would hope you have a manager who 1) has a plan defensively, and 2) good track record of defensive signings.
Can you name any defensive signings that have come under his tenure that have actually worked out? Furthermore, is he a good defensive coach and I am in opposite land?

Arsenal are guaranteed to become Europa league contenders and 5-6th place finishers in EPL. Congrats.

Nico Pareja and Daniel Carrico were both excellent under him at Sevilla. Pareja came back to Spain from Russia, while Carrico had just been relegated with Reading in the Premier League. Even now after all their injuries they're probably Sevilla's best defensive pairing. While he didn't sign him, Federico Fazio found his best form under Emery (which earned him a move to Spurs and then Roma later on).
In midfield, Krychowiak had such an amazing season under him PSG were convinced to buy him. Now he plays for West Brom. Stephane Mbia, a castaway from a relegated Queens Park Rangers, was also decent.
He's not a defensive coach (he can be, especially in away games) but he gives plenty of consideration to the defence. His teams are attacking, but they were never reckless like Arsenal under Wenger.

I want to agree with you, but I am sorry, if you believe that level of defensive awareness is going to cut it for a team that needs a defensive overhaul, I just cannot agree.
Over a career of 10 years between Valencia, Sevilla, and PSG- looking at 2 somewhat okay defensive signings doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence that he can fix the defense. I hope I'm wrong, and maybe he will surprise us, I just think Arsenal could have done better.

Who thought honestly?
Remember Allegri is adamant on staying at Juve. And if transfer budget was the issue, then obviously our higher ups have a plan they want to work with, and won't get a manager that doesn't wanna work within a certain budget, that just makes sense. So he is off the list.
Ancelotti or Pellegrini? Pffffft pls. We don't want just stability like a few people here have been mentioning, and these are stability managers. They're old and they're there for two or three years until things get stagnant. The board wants someone who is young, who can build a team and enforce some identity hopefully for as long as possible.
Jardim? Is he really better than Emery? I would say they're at the same level at this stage of their careers.

Emery is not bad per say , he is just not cut for a big club with a lot of money / media attention .
Arsenal might be a good fit. There is no huge pressure to win given that they don't invest crazy money like the others. What is asked from him is give a fair fight / gets top 4 / play exciting football and win Europa league if possible.

I really don't understand this logic. We're talking about Arsenal here, a club who has already 13 PL titles under its belt. You have no debts whatsoever and have an annual revenue that exceeds £400m. Really, you have the infrastructure to be gunning for all titles and be ambitious beyond measure.
Chelsea whose annual revenue hovers around £360m and don't come close to matching the spending power of United and City happen to be more ambitious than you even though trophy-wise you're more successful.
Sometimes I get the feeling that Arsenal fans don't realize that their club is one of the biggest in the world and have everything in place to be as ambitious as the rest and not be content with a miserable four-place finish.
If I'm coming across a little harsh, I apologize, it's not my intention. But if I was an Arsenal fan, I would be seething right now because really there's no excuse to have such low expectations from a financially healthy big club with a powerful brand.
Emery is not good enough for Arsenal. Not this Arsenal. The Arsenal that not too long ago won the PL without a defeat that is, and went neck and neck with Barcelona in the CL final.
Of course, it would be unrealistic to expect immediate success in a transition phase. But your long term target (two - three years from now) should be the PL and a proper CL fight. Nothing less.

Re: OFFICIAL : Unai Emery signs for Arsenal
Well, it so happens that Emery is likely to sign for only two-three years. As I mentioned early, the club should and will reassess things after that time. But until then, we have to get on an upward trajectory again.
I think a couple of things need to be cleared up, though.
This was not the case until literally this season. Yes, we had healthy finances and state-of-the-art facilities, but the personnel was far behind almost every club. Wenger was the head coach, head of recruitment and director of football all rolled into one and was the key decision maker on all three fronts. It wasn't until last summer that specialist people were brought in to modernise the club structure and that process went on throughout this season. The final step was changing the head coach. So it's only now that we have a modern infrastructure in place like an elite club. Until that was in place, Wenger could not be sacked - hence him signing a new deal last summer.
Nobody is content with fourth place. However, there is an acceptance that it's a reasonable short-term target given the decline over the last two seasons. It is unrealistic to go from sixth to title challengers in a single summer. That would be the case even if we had Allegri, Simeone or Jardim or any other so-called elite coach in charge. The gap between us and Manchester City is laughably huge and not something that'll be closed in a short space of time.
The club doesn't have everything in place to compete - that's been the main issue recently. Beyond having a declining manager, investment in the squad is the highest its ever been but the return on that investment has been poor. Recruitment has been an incredibly mixed bag and you can see now that the squad is in need of a lot of work as a result.
The last title win was 14 years ago. That CL final was 12 years ago. That is a long, long time in football and so much has changed. "That" Arsenal was a legendary team, the best its ever had, full of world class players with a manager in his prime. "This" Arsenal team is one of the worst in recent club history, has maybe one or two world class players at a stretch, and had a manager well beyond his prime for many years.
You make it sound like someone can walk in and start winning right away but that's really not the case. We're in no position to be turning our noses up at Emery.

I should amend my earlier comment to say I don't think it's a BAD choice.
I think Emery is getting a lot of hate here, perhaps too much. I think Jay's analysis is spot on.
He's about Arsenals level though, and that's why I said they can do better. Arsenal's level right now isn't very high.
Still, Wenger had become BELOW arsenals level. He was holding Arsenal back. So I expect to see improvement.

idk, Pool's look way better to me on paper tbh even if it's still underwhelming, both should be bringing in more midfielders though
Oxalade is *bleep* class show some respect. He was pivotal everytime we beat City. He assisted so many goals as well in the short time he's been here.

Even if he does, it won't change my opinion of him.
I mean why would it? I have an opinion based on nearly a decade going back to his Valencia days.
I didn't really watch him for PSG but considering Sevilla was pretty much exactly the same as Valencia I see no reason why he'll change now.
I don't knee jerk, if I have nearly a decade of evidence to base off I'm not going to change that opinion of one or two seasons.
That's completely emotional and nonsensical.

Probably more, those were just off the top of my head.
Pelle I'm not convinced is any better
Ancelotti I agree, but would he be interested in Arsenal? Besides most of the fans in GL didn't want him IIRC
Conte is leaving England, would not really be interested in stepping down to Arsenal
Sarri is off to Chelsea
Arsenal probably want someone before the WC to coordinate transfers, so Lowe's out
Benitez again I'm not sure is clearly better
Allegri has no reason to step down from CL contender to Europa league club
Enrique agreed, not sure what Jardim's situation is
So that leaves only Ancelotti, Pelle, Benitez and Enrique, and other than Carlo I can't say that any of them are clearly better than Emery.

Well then that's just stupid.
The situation at Arsenal is different than scrubs such as Valencia and Sevilla. He will have more at his disposal, bigger budget, bigger infrastructure. Plus he won't have the egos of PSG to deal with.

Nope, stupid would be ignoring his entire career on the back of one season.
But that would be something an overly emotional sports fan does who ignores the facts.
Also why do I need to get behind him Lol? He's not my teams manager, I don't need to do anything.

What happened to Blanc? From what I've seen of him, he seems to be a very good manager, better than jobbers like Tuchel, Emery, etc. Has no one approached him these past two seasons? He would've fit in pretty nicely at Arsenal imo.sportsczy wrote:Lucien Favre, Laurent Blanc (PSG were better with him and less weapons overall), Leonardo Jardim, Eusebio Di Francesco, etc.
