Re: World Cup 2018 General Discussion
There are a number of channels (10 or so) that are available for free on the airwaves. Anything else is for money. Those free ones happen to carry the WC.El Gunner wrote:But don't you guys pay for tv licenses to have tv?

So you still pay, don't come out here saying it's free
Over here we have DStv (a satellite broadcasting company) that show our football matches. It's not automatic tv though that comes with just having your tv and antenna, you have to get it installed, but most people here that make at least a decent income do have it. We pay 60 USD / 45 pounds sterling for it per month, and it includes entertainment, movie, music, documentary, history, wildlife and religious channels
Now you can also stream online with your account details, which is what I do since I moved away from home

Our TV license costs 150 a year, it's absolutely *bleep* all to anyone with any sort of income.

In the US, DirectTV direct cost $10 per month, has everything... and is part of my ATT wireless plan. ATT bought DirecTV so it's packages.
Everything unlimited mobile phone cost $65 or thereabout total. Not the cheapest. But it's all one bill and I don't need anything else other than internet.

That's unreal.
Canada, or more specifically, Ontario is pricey. No unlimited wireless plans for data. 5GB on a shareable plan with unlimited talk/text is $105 per month and cable is $50-100 per month depending on your package, whew

Regularly hear about how Canada is terrible for that stuff. I think there are only a couple companies that basically monopolize everything? in the UK unlimited internet and phone plans are pretty great and cheap.

Yes only 4 companies share the market. I am getting robbed myself with 1GB+text/talk at 65$. They gave me the iPhone once i've subscribed tho...
There exists lesser known companies who offer text service without contract but no internet data, it's mostly used by drug dealers.

Re: World Cup 2018 General Discussion
In Finland the World Cup has always been on the national broadcaster (that's obviously available to everyone). The license fee is a tax and you pay proportionally to your income. Thinking about it, I think the lowest earners don't have to pay anything. I don't care if the national broadcaster gives up every other sports event but keeps the Euros and the WC.
Games at mostly great times for us this year. 1pm, 4pm, 7pm and 10pm kick-offs today

Everyone looks mediocre so far. The World Cup is dangerously prepared for Southgate's boys IMO.

GL take a long hard look at this....
Because it will be the man who brings England the World Cup and you get to suffer me and Firenze shoving it in your face for the next 4 years tbh.

Game 1 people... long club season in Europe and most of the top players on the top teams played deep into European comps too.
Game 2 and 3 will tell a lot.

Despite having a distinct approach and clear plan, England still plays mediocre football so I won't be surprised if they match everyone else's performance.
Football still coming home though. Cannot be helped.

Didn't think Mex would pull it off like that. Glad they did tho. Fearing Mex might get overconfident with Sweden but it's starting to look like a top group finish.

Re: World Cup 2018 General Discussion
i dont know if this was talked about but, do you think there has been some levels of course correction from FIFA with regard to VAR use on penalty situations?
From yesterday when we had PK situation on almost every game, legitimate or not, to today when Refs made strong calls on the pitch not to go for the review...
I heard that the refs in the video are actually also advising the ref whether he should go review a call on the sideline to change his decision, but this is still very much work in progress.

Re: World Cup 2018 General Discussion
VAR is a tool, if the ref on the field doesn't utilize is then there's an educational gap. Given it's the first major tournament for it to be used, and the amount of scrutiny each decision or non-decision brings, it's normal to have such reactions.
A better system would be the VAR letting the *bleep* on the field know that he should look again, and look again right away but maybe I am simplifying the technology and how seamless the communication is between the on field and video referees

Re: World Cup 2018 General Discussion
I just don't think the tool changes anything at all if it's not used on every single big call.
As I see it at this point VAR mainly helps taking away offside goals.
Penalty-wise it's still sketchy. Hopefully it'll improve a lot.
