Re: The Oscars 2018 | 90th Academy Awards
As long as you guys realise, it's not just entertainment, it's art as well.
Anyway. Saw The Shape of Water today. Much like Pan's Labyrinth it didn't move me. There were some lovely scenes, admittedly and with the very good execution of the film I think it is his best work to date (saying that without having seen The Devil's Backbone). But something about del Toro's fantastical style fused with sociopolitical issues just isn't my cup of tea I guess.
Sally Hawkins was excellent though.

Margot Robbie is absolutely incredible.
Not huge on Allison Janney. Didn’t see how this performance was different to what she’s been doing her entire career.

Like most of you on here, I also don't get the Three Billboards hype.
The whole mood was just off for either a satire or black comedy. Like for instance, why did there have to be such a lot of swearing? Really?
Will see if I can somehow get I, Tonya from somewhere, and also this other lowkey film called Columbus before I make my list.

Re: The Oscars 2018 | 90th Academy Awards
The swearing was a little excessive even for small town midwestern America, but it wasn't ultimately that far off when you look at the kind of life the characters lived and the occupations they were in
The swearing was one of the last things to bother me lol, it's that the black characters in the film are treated like an afterthought.
For a film that is focused so clearly on female rage, I don't understand why they completely ignored the obvious racial tension and oppression that was occurring in the town. It kind of unravels the whole thing for me. If you weren't going to address it, leave it out of the film completely. Don't illustrate that it was there and existed and then focus the entire film on McDormand, female rage, and the power structures that keep women "in line"

Best thing about it for me was Sam Rockwell's arc, and that's saying a lot.

Re: The Oscars 2018 | 90th Academy Awards
I realize that Three Billboards couldn't have predicted #MeToo happening, but it, I think, makes the film look a bit tacky in the awards season considering the subject matter. Feels like a power grab.
You know they're going to give it best picture too, so that the Oscars can feel good about themselves. Haven't seen it but hoping Shape of Water gets best pic anyway

If it was me, I would give Lady Bird or CMBYN best pic.
If I want to be political about my choice, I would give it to Get Out.
Definitely would give Greta Gerwig best director.

Rockwell finally got his long deserved Oscar for Green Mile. Weak year overall for male performances I thought. The women’s field has been much stronger for once.

Imagine awarding Blade Runner with the visual award over Apes.

Shape of water is a painfully ordinary film. Sigh. Direction was good and may be he deserved it but if it win best film, well. What a weak year this is. Seriously. The film I liked most from what I have seen so far is actually Coco lol. and yea Get out was awesome too.

Coco was the most predictable movie I’d ever seen tbh.
Lego Batman was the better film.

And Coco wasnt spectacular or anything. It was a decent-ish 7.5-8 range film.

Wanted Get Out to win. Happy Three Billboards only win acting. Only good thing about it tbh.
Phantom Thread best movie of the nominated ones I’ve seen.
Florida Project is the one that will stand the test of time.

Re: The Oscars 2018 | 90th Academy Awards
Neither the 2 front runners this year were good enough especially when we compare them to last year's strong list.
Get out was never going to win it. It was a brilliant movie (very Kubrick and Haneke like visionary) albeit the fact it didnt strike the chord with me as much it should have.
And Florida Project, I am extremely eager to watch that movie.

Re: The Oscars 2018 | 90th Academy Awards
Anyway. on a positive note, delighted for Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell. I have become a big fan of both over the years. Former, after seeing her in all those films of the Coen brothers and Rockwell, well after those roles in Green Mile and Moon.
And in a small way, I am also happy a film which has Michael Shannon playing a major role won the best picture. The guy is probably my fav actor right now.

Bruh, for real. I haven't watched any others but from what I heard LA 92 sounded a lot better.

Even critics didn’t like Icarus that much. 68 metacritic opposes to 95 for Faces Places. I only saw Icarus and it was so disjointed and boring. And none of it was any revelation. Didn’t make me smarter or emotional. The first concept of the doc was fine and more interesting.
Blade Runner is a much better film than Apes. But visual effects vise there’s no contest. Uncanny valley copy for one scene opposed to Apes so detailed and real that they’ll stand the test of time.
So used to people voting for the movie as a whole for the technical categories.
Deakins winning was the highlight after Kobe

Oh shit yea didn't even know Kobe was up for anything. Where can I find his short film?
My highlight was Deakins and Jordan Peele winning. Probably the only two awards I totally agree with
