Portugal: Last Chance? Empty Portugal: Last Chance?

Post by Kaladin Sun Sep 03, 2017 6:01 am

Portugal has a semi-golden generation at the moment, with many talents sprouting, unfortunately the only thing standing in Nani/Quaresma's way to the first XI is CR, i reckon its his last tournament. However, they have a decent core of veterans (Pepe, CR, Moutinho) and youngsters (B. Silva, Mario, Semedo, A. Silva). Do you think they have a legitimate chance at the WC, provided no one is injured?

CR--A.Silva--B.Silva
Moutinho--Carvalho--Mario
Guerreiro--Pepe--Fonte--Semedo
Patricio

Bench: Semedo, Coentrao. Danilo Pereira, Sanches, Adrien Silva, Cedric, Eder, Rafa, Gelson Martins

Thoughts?

Yeah, similar to their chances to win Euro, they can jammy their way to a WC win.

Let's wait and see what the group stage looks like and the potential match up for the knockout phase. They have a good team enough to reach 1/8 . From there anything can happen but Spain, Brazil, France, Germany are favorites imo.

Euro with 24 teams are shit and Portugal winning it in 2016 is the ultimate proof of that.

For most of the competition the Portuguese were mediocre, after their easy group stage they got lucky enough to be dropped in the second pot, the one with Northern Ireland, Hungary & Wales while every big team was facing each other in the pot 1.

- Spain in transition
- Germany no CF and injuries
- France playing with Giroud and chocking the final

So Portugal 2016 CHAMPIONS was the result for a lot of favorable circumstances for them, on paper and on the field i never felt like that team was intimidating like European champions should.

Portugal always lacked a proper CF since PM Pauleta... André Silva is not that much of a special player. From what i saw of him, not the type of player that transcends his team to achieve more than it should. B+ player at best. Better than Éder ? Sure, but what is that worth ?

The rest of the team is of high standing but i can't see them reaching further than the quarters (which is already a cool achievement).

Andre Silva has scored in virtually every one of his Portugal appearances bar 2, not sure what you on about here. CR labels him the best striker in Portugal and called him, showers him with praise, approved his move to Milan before anyone git a say in it. He practically see him as his successor in the NT.

I don't see why not. If I were to rank it I'd put Germany, Brazil, and Spain in the top groups as favorites, then I'd have teams like Portugal, Argentina, Italy, France, and probably Belgium just below them.

I respectfully disagree, Warrior. Portugal are worthy champions of Europe.

It's true, they had a relatively "easy" road to the final compared to the other pot where most of the favorites were murdering each other for glory. But let's not forget that, ultimately, they had to beat one beast to lift the trophy. They had to beat France, the favorite who brushed aside Germany, in their own backyard, in front of their howling fans, and without their star player.

They may have not been the brightest star in the tournament. But when it mattered most, they laid waste to the biggest favorite of the competition.

Which brings me to my second point. If somebody asked me right now who do I think will win the WC in Russia, I would honestly answer the question by a firm "I have no bleeding idea".

Never in a million years would I have guessed that Chelsea would be European Champion in 2012, or Madrid in 2016 or Inter in 2010 or even Greece in 2004.

Those teams didn't look "intimidating" as you say. They barely had their heads above water, but when it truly mattered, they delivered.

Now, make no mistake. Being worthy Champion doesn't equate to you being the best. The best team doesn't always win. Real Madrid sure as hell weren't the best team in Europe in 2016. But what makes you worthy champion is the concept of delivering when it matters most, and I think Portugal did that to perfection through a rock solid defense, a tiny bit of luck and ground-splitting grit.

So to circle back to the main question; I honestly have no idea who's going to lift the world cup in Russia. I do have a couple favorites in my mind, but given the fact that football is unpredictable and truly anything can happen, I'm going to stick with "I have no bleeding idea".

CR is on a great period of his career/life, that he finds enthusiasm in players like André Silva is not surprising. He "approved" his move to AC Milan woooow what a cool guy he is. Just because CR says so doesn't mean he is the real deal.

Watched him a couple times already and he is not world class and probably will never become. Nothing extraordinary in his game. I'm not saying this to indirectly bash on Milan, it's my honest review of what i saw.

Also 8 goals in 13 appearances with Portugal, all against world class opponents

DEMON OF CARTHAGE

Clutch mentality sure matters, but the squad you have matters even more. You say Real was not the best team in Europe, but on paper they were. And they destroyed the best european team "based on results" in the CL final. So maybe Portugal can have a Cinderella story but i wouldn't bet on it. However, yes, a good journey to the quarters is somewhat expected.

Greece 2004 was even worse in terms of surprising lol, but they actually beat more than one legit team and stick to their defensive scheme by all cost. The Juve fan in me approves their strategy What a Face

I just don't see Portugal translating the exploit in a World Cup where most teams will be stronger than they were 2 years ago + Brazil + Argentina. They are far from favourites. If i had to make a prediction, right now, i would call France next world champions.

It's really early to say. 1 season can change everything. Aside from Brazil, Spain and Germany, in which I'm pretty confident that they will do well, I can't say.

No chance, World Cup is a different kind of beast, i don't think an underdog ever won the World Cup. It's between Germany, Brazil, France, Spain and Argentina imo. Maybe Belgium if they click.

The Euros was a farce. I called out the system when it started. 24 slots for 50 teams? You have a 50% chance of making it. Absolute nonsense.

Portugal took their chance and I don't see them getting one anytime soon.

A farce, yes it describes exactly Euro 2016 and why Portugal ended up with the trophy. Only the final was an exploit thanks to Lloris, they never "delivered when it mattered the most". At best they had a collection of snatch victories in easy/boring games. Sorry to offend but i say Portugal is not an elite NT even if they have some exceptional players in the squad.

Excellent post, i wish i was able to be concise like that.
