Re: Yakuza series
Thanks. Turn-based, huh? That's an interesting approach. Look forward to seeing more from that game.

Mahn this Yakuza 0 is deeper than it let's you on. Still on chapter three but already some legit turn of events. That cut scene at the start of ch 3 though

Yeah, it takes a while before the story gets going, but it gets good when it does. Yakuza 7 starts even more slowly. It felt like I was near the end of the game when the story of that game started getting interesting.

Re: Yakuza series
Currently playing the fifth chapter, already liking majhima more than kiryu. My only gripe so far is them long ass cut scenes. It's not like they're bad, but I've got attention span of 5 year old and it's hard to go through them. Can't skip them out of the fear of missing something important.

Re: Yakuza series
I've always thought Firenze had the attention span of a 5 year old, and he got bored early and stopped playing after chapter 2 or something, so I think you're underestimating yourself Most of the cut-scenes in Yakuza 0 are "skippable", unlike in Yakuza 6, where they fill you in on the deeper parts of the story and what things are like below the surface of what you're introduced to initially.

Re: Yakuza series
I think Majima is more likeable in Yakuza 0, before he becomes batshit crazy. It's a prequel, after all. Kiryu's the man in the earlier games.
I would start on Yakuza 5 right now, if I didn't get so burnt out on the 1-4 remakes. That game supposedly revolves around 3 characters other than Kiryu. I'm just not motivated to start playing it, yet. Think I'll start on the Prey DLC tomorrow. I've been told it's good, and pretty lengthy for what it is.

Re: Yakuza series
Yeah, the sudden and drastic bump in pacing is quite typical of the Yakuza series, I think. Yakuza 6 is even worse, in that regard. The first half of that game felt like a tourist/babysitter simulator that lulled me into sleep, and then *boom* out of nowhere - government conspiracies! Assassins! Betrayals! Nuclear weapons! Everyone wants to kill everyone! I was shocked

Re: Yakuza series
Completed the 11 the chapter today. This game, this fucking game I was not at all prepared for this gripping story and them badass revelations. All the loose threads are starting to tighten up. Kudos to good lads @thimmy and @mole for suggesting this gem of a game. The start was rather dull but my God has it sped up.

Re: Yakuza series
Beat Yakuza 0 two days ago and purposefully avoided talking about it for two days to avoid any rushed over the top view or opinion. So now that after the head is clear I can safely say that this is the best gaming experience I have had surpassing heavyweights like RDR2, UC4 and GoW4. Not even exaggerating. I will cherish this game for long time.

Can't believe in 5 months I have beat RDR2, UC4, GoW4 and Yakuza 0. Very impressive considering the hours I work. Witcher 3 is next. Will start it on Saturday

Seriously though, I was not at all convinced by this game initially and was about to just dump it had it not for you and Mole.

Re: Yakuza series
Some games are just like that; they have a slow and maybe even unappealing start, and then they transition over to something incredible. I had a similar experience with Nier: Automata. I can't really recommend that game to anyone because you have to put several hours into a fairly unexceptional and repetitive experience, only to get to the part where the game becomes thoroughly immersive and interesting. The majority of people simply don't have the patience for that, and they shouldn't be expected to. Nier is probably the most expressive and impressionable game I've played in recent time, I absolutely loved it by the time I got to "the proper ending", but it almost burnt me out on playing games in general.

Re: Yakuza series
Japanese games are just like that, in general. They love taking their time to set the scene and give you a feel for the environment and atmosphere before stepping on the accelerator.
It has its drawbacks, though. Yakuza 0 turned into something amazing and made the slow start worth it, but I pretty much dropped Yakuza 3 before it got going because its opening hours are tedious as hell.

Re: Yakuza series
How far have you gotten in Like a Dragon so far, Firenze? And what do you think about the game? I'm on chapter 10, I think. Been quite busy at work lately, so I haven't had much time to play the game. Also, I've spent far too much time doing side activities, as usual.

Re: Yakuza series
Finished it maybe a week ago, clocked in at 35ish hours, I only did 25 or so side stories, found most of them meh compared to say, Yakuza 6
wasn't a huge fan of the combat system (negatively affected what the series is all about, epic boss battles IMO) or Ijincho as the main setting but the characters (party especially) and the last third of the game were very strong IMO. I enjoyed the story a lot. Ichiban is a great MC.
