Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
I was thinking about what else to expect this summer. We've got Kolasinac, so that area is checked off. It appears we aren't going to see a new senior GK come in and we'll instead make a little cash from selling off Szczesny and Ospina. Let's hope Martinez as deputy is a good idea! The club are clearly looking at midfielders (Goretzka, Fornals, Kovacic, Lemina, etc rumors), and strikers (Laca, Mbappe). No murmurs about any new central defenders or tricky playmakers.
Then there are reports about Lemar, and AS just said Carrasco could be a target if Alexis goes. (I actually predicted press would make noise about Carrasco-to-Arsenal a few months ago!) I feel like these are "if" targets -- that is, IF Alexis gets sold.
I hope that Alexis stays, even if it means running down his contract, and that we can get good players in midfield and up top. That'd be three signings, which is what Wenger indicated was his "maximum" transfer activity.
But does anyone else find it strange that we're not really linked to any RBs? With Debuchy and Jenkinson on their way out, and Ox still considered a long-term central midfield player, we'll need someone to deputize for Bellerin. I'm surprised we're not hearing mumbles about "Wenger admires Kardsdorp" or "Arsenal looking to poach Ligue 2 right-back."

There were (probably groundless) murmurs about a January move for this guy in 2016. But it seems like Madrid are moving for him now?
BTW, I was looking over the GL thread on 'Next Big Things' from the spring of '16 and it's funny how it took until summertime for anyone, just one person (it was sportsczy) to mention Mbappe. Imagine going into that thread in March 2016 and predicting that a potential world record transfer fee could come in 2017 for a teenager who hadn't even been mentioned.

Apparently (this is from The Telegraph) Arsenal's business is being held up by the Alexis/Ozil contracts.

tbf the players are on holidays, the transfer window isn't officially open yet and it runs for more than another 2 months.
I always wonder about fans panicking about the perceived status of their clubs' summer business so early
Makes no sense, especially since we don't know at all about the details and stages of negotiations

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Some interesting stuff about the Mbappe links from Le Parisien, it's an article which gives us some info about all the interested clubs and their chances to sign him-- including Arsenal: http://www.leparisien.fr/sports/football/psg/mercato-dans-la-tete-du-prodige-mbappe-21-06-2017-7072554.php
I'll post the Arsenal bits:
- Kylian Mbappé's family: "Wenger is a great manager. If Kylian signs to Arsenal tomorrow, it will be for him."
- Kylian Mbappé's family: "He [Wenger] knows how to shape young players. Especially former strikers of the French team, Henry and Anelka."
- Mbappe wants to join Barca or Madrid by age 22. The choice is now stay at Monaco until then or go to an intermediate club (like us).
- Jorge Mendes is handling things on Monaco's side.
- Europa League not an issue (according to Mbappe's family) if he decides to join Arsenal.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Are we prepared to deal with yap yap of transfer BS every window, after paying some 100m quid for a teenager, who sees us anyway as a stepping stone?
What if he picks up a long term injury and then contributes zilch, before we eventually move him on for pennies? Is our financial model good enough to absorb such contingencies?
And will the rewards of having him justify taking the above risks? I.e. will he help us win a bucketload of trophies, and also manage to churn us a profit when he moves on?
-------------
What we need is not one star (young) player. What we need is a competent manager, who doesn't repeat the same systemic issues on the pitch and in training without learning a single lesson in years.
You can binge on Gunner Galacticos, but you can't win shit with 11 individuals in a dysfunctional setup.

Usually I'd agree but this is Arsenal we're talking about. Chances are these Ozil/Alexis negotiations are going to continue on into August and we'll be days away from our first league game without the majority of business being done.
The window not being officially open means so little when you see the amount of business that's completed early by clubs.
And there's a lot that has to be done this summer with player sales and contract negotiations, so the lack of any real news, even though it's still early, is concerning.
This summer is already reminding me a lot of the 2011 summer when we lost Nasri and Fabregas, and that summer was a horror show that took the next two summer windows to recover from.

Competent clubs put plans in place and factor in contingencies.
Your confidence in them making comprehensive strategies and their ability to execute such plans diminishes when you see the same shit repeating annually.
There is nothing to gain by panicking, true. But there is also nothing to gain from picnicking.
Not knowing details of what's going on behind the scenes, though necessary for the club, adds to the uncertainty of the emotionally invested fanbase. It is easier to deal with that uncertainty if there is a level of trust in the competence of the staff. When you have a bunch of idiots taking poor care of the shit, who have showed their incompetence over the years, fans are going to be edgy and jump at the smallest proclamation of the sky falling down.
It is but logical.

Yes we can afford the risk because as of right now we are a Europa League club and we have to take what is (possibly) given to us. We should be considered lucky that a player of Mbappe's calibre is even considering us let alone question whether it's worth the risk.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Didn't know about this
http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/arsenal-transfer-news-summer-sell-out-tie-alexis-sanchez-mesut-ozil-new-contract-a7803741.html
TL;DR version
New rules come into effect next season whereby teams can't raise their wage bill by more than £7m per year.
If they do they have to make up the excess some other way i.e. tv money, tickets, commercial deals or player sales.
Alexis and Ozil new deals would push us over the £7m threshold, so we'd need to sell. A lot.

Alexis, Ozil, Cech, Xhaka and Bellerin are the only players I would be legitimately upset if they left. There are some which would annoy me if they left but nothing like these guys.
