Re: The Movie House - Part 9
This looks decent. Helmed by a quality Dutch director apparently. His filmography on IMDb looks quite impressive.

Glory wrote:^I agree. And I believe they will give best supporting male to Mahershala Ali just to put Moonlight's name up there. Or may be Adapted Screenplay but considering its rather puny when compared to the big 6 awards, my money's on Ali winning.
Any notable snubs as far as nomination's concerned?
I thought Joel Edgerton was locked for a run in the best actors category this oscars for Loving going by the trailer and hearing the premise of that film. Surprised he aint even in the noms. At least Negga got one. So fair enuff.
And Chris Pine. Thought he was dope in Hell or Highwater. Honorable mentions at least.
BTW anyone watched Lion yet? Is Dev Patel that good to land a supporting nom. Or are they merely filling the quota?
And yea James McAvoy deserved a nom too right, for Split?
Pretty sure both Dev Patel and Viola Davis are frauds in their categories once again. They're basically both leads from what I have read.
Split isn't eligible until next year, and he won't get nominated then.

Viola Davis is gonna win it. Heard Naomi Harris was brilliant in Moonlight. But considering Davis's an academy favorite, can see her winning it.
Anyway considering I havent watched any of these films in question, not in a position to pass verdicts.

Viola is winning it no doubt. She's still a lead in the play and it seems everyone agrees it's also the case in the movie. The same as Alicia Vikander winning best supporting last year for a leading role. Hate that shit.

Better so because if they had her in best actress leading role and took her as winner over my girl because of their agenda shit, there would have been trouble.
My heart yearns to watch La La Land and Manchester By the Sea, only two films that can still take top spot in my best of year list I feel.

Still haven't seen La La Land but I doubt a musical will top Arrival for me. Manchester By the Sea, though, might do it.

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
I would feel that way if I was indifferent to musicals, but I really have a strong disdain for musicals for whatever reason. Just never been my cup of tea. I remember nearly dying of boredom in the theater during Les Mis.
Like I can already tell this movie probably has amazing cinematography, directing, design, color, even score. But if the story sucks or they don't have good character development and they are just breaking into song at weird ass moments for no reason I know I won't like it.

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
LLL is not your avg musical.
- PUTTING THE REST OF THE POST BEHIND THE SPOILER WALL JUST IN CASE U DONT WANT TO KNOW. so pls note: its not a spoiler per se, instead just a continuation:
- Its more of a movie with songs in between. The rest of the movie pans out just like a normal one with spoken dialogues.
The difference between LLL and other famous musicals such as Les Miserables and Sweeney Todd is that in the latter ones instead of dialogues, the characters sing songs to convey stuff. I hate those kind.
If LLL was that kind of a 'musical', I would have hated it however good the other aspects of the movie was. Thank God it wasnt.

Thank you Glory. That's a helpful post.
I'm definitely going to see it. I just hope I'm not disappointed after the hype.
I love Damien Chazelle and Whiplash is one of my favorite movies of all time.

That is a musical though. Grease is the typical musical for me. Also Singin' In The Rain is like that.
A movie with songs would be more like Inside Llewyn Davis, Sing Street and the rest of John Carney's films.

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
Hmm. In that case, have you watched any Indian especially Bollywood movies? Or at least even heard about them? In them, you have these dance numbers, in between the movie out of nowhere where the hero and the heroine dance to a choreographed jig in tune to a background song. The rest of the movie proceeds normally with spoken dialogues after that 'song' gets completed. LLL's music is more or less like that I would say.
Again, remember Slumdog Millionaire's ending? Dev Patel and that chick dance at the railway station after they reunite. So, may be you know we can call LLL as much a musical as is Slumdog. If you didnt have any problem watching SM inspite of the songs in between I BELIEVE, AGAIN ONUS IS ON I, you wouldnt have any issue with them 'musical' tag attached to LLL.

Well, I don't care about if it's a musical or a music movie. I love musicals. Can't wait for La La Land.
La La Land is an homage to the classic musicals of Hollywood though. The things I've heard from the soundtrack already has made me so excited.
Les Miserables etc are Broadway musicals and are whole different beast.

Depends on the particular musical really. Don't find Sweeney Todd compelling. I love Hamilton more than anything in this life. It's so good. There's not a lot of Broadway I've heard though. Not the same listening to it as opposed to seeing it.
I prefer the La La Land, Singin' The Rain, Sound of Music musicals.
Give Hamilton a listen if you've not. Think it'll be a movie in a couple years

Jackie
Natalie Portman me. Natalie Portman me all day long yea. What a performance. The film itself is the best biopic that has come out in a while largely probably because it doesn't feel like a biopic, more like a mix of a documentary and fictionalised story. There's such a controlled poise to it. And the score, oh the haunting score. Give Mica Levi the Oscar for it.

I like Eric Bana but his accent in Black Hawk Down was the worst thing I've ever heard.

Manchester by the Sea finally.
8.8/10
Casey Affleck guys. Just Wowww. That subtlety and controlled rage he brought to that role. Haunting. Not even once we get a feeling he was overplaying his part. Mature, grounded in reality and sincere performance from the man.
The whole movie was just brilliant. Very real and very close to life.
Actually I wanted to talk a lot about this movie, about things I noticed, but nah may be later. Let it sink in first. Its a very meticulously made movie, thats for all to see. Kudos to the director. Anyone seen other films of this guy, Kenneth Lonergan?
And finally Michelle Williams. WhyTf is she not doing more films guys. Every time she comes in front of a camera, even if its just a minor scene, she just oozes class. Girl is easily better than most of those overrated fakeazz chicks we are forced to sit through these days.

EDIT: Actually I checked IMDb after I posted this and found out she;s doing enough movies. Just that they are all stuff I have never heard of lol. May be I need to check them out. I like her a lot. Especially since that performance in Blue Valentine.

There's Margaret directed by Lonergan which is supposedly good. Was thinking of watching it soon before I hopefully go see Manchester By the Sea soon as well.
EDIT: just checked his filmography. He wrote and directed You Can Count on Me, a pretty little good indie film I enjoyed quite much. Apparently he also co-wrote Scorsese's Gangs of New York.
