The Haaland - Raiola & Lensar - Heyman comparison is too good.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
The elite players (Messi, CR, Neymar, Mbappe etc) need to speak up and refuse to play if they really want to make a difference, but that won't happen because they like money as much as the owners do.
For those involved, it makes a lot of good sense financially, but it ultimately hurts the sport as a whole.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
Agnelli stuff is just incredible. He called proposed CL reforms “beautiful” last month. He was chair of ECA, to represent interests of clubs across Europe. The UEFA President Ceferin is godfather to his daughter! And he seems to have betrayed them all. https://t.co/q67khLOZKq

I had actually lost interest at the start of corona season and now I will surely not watch any team what so ever, if it actually happens.

Yeah, I find this reasoning to be stupid as hell lol. It's not like the current system is for the people. Fucking hell
As a fan of an actual small club this ESL doesn't chance a thing at all. Not like we don't get plundered by big clubs anyway.

I do agree but the result will be an NBA/NHL/NFL type of league, much more of a monopoly of a handful of clubs who will continuously share the wealth year over year. Even though these are the richest clubs as it is, it removes much of the magic of the sport.
But I don’t think it’s an American influence. Only the greed of a handful of men with ludicrous financial backing. 3.5 billion euros to each founding team? Apart from Manchester United, Real and Barca, the remaining teams aren’t even worth that much. The other reason this happened is covid-19 losses giving these clubs far too much financial incentive to jump ship. It really sucks
I hope it doesn’t materialize. I like the current set up. If these geniuses want to do anything they should work on the international breaks and proper refereeing in matches, maybe finally figure out VAR

There are still enough positive examples of meritocracy in Football right now. Let's not discount and behave like sport died ages ago even if only the top teams make it to CL finals.
Agreed the new CL was built by UEFA to keep the competition alive and bring in more money for those who participate but atleast small clubs had a huge chance to play against players like Messi and Ronaldo. Even the shabby Nations League allowed Wales, Scotland, Hungary and hell North Macedonia to finally play in the Euros with the big boys.
This ESL just throws everything and basically creates a new sport. These 12 teams are basically safe guarding themselves even if it means they destroy the sport.
Obviously there is some form of overreaction and a lot of hypocrisy from us here but it is justified because we are the only voice of reason for this sport in the money filled toxic footballing world (that again we perpetuate), this is the last chance for fans to be fans and not customers.
This is a massive moment for everyone to rethink about 3 basic questions in isolation here:
1) What is a sport to you?
2) What is Football to you?
3) What is your club to you?

Re: The European Super League Megathread
The NBA specifically has a salary cap and the money isn't spread about a handful of clubs.
Like the sport and other American sports have their own issues but this isn't it.

What is the difference, 30 clubs instead of 20? It's a similar closed ring of clubs that formed leagues separately to compete with existing leagues.
IIRC the super bowl was the match between the NFL and the AFL in its inception.
Basically the same as having the CL winner play against the ESL winner. The new meaning of the supercup I guess.

Sure there is, certain teams have much more appeal and buying power. Also, the NBA has a "soft" salary cap, where teams can exceed it, so long as they pay a luxury tax. The Golden State Warriors have a luxury tax bill of $147 million (https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/warriors/warriors-luxury-tax-bill-far-outpaces-every-team-nba-season). And the league is plainly and openly anti-competitive with super teams forming every couple seasons and players taking pay cuts to stay under the cap. But what I really meant about the NBA, other North America leagues, is there is a set number of teams that don't change due to performance, unlike soccer which is what makes it beautiful. If you watch the NBA and your team is shit (which we both can relate to), you just wait until next season and hope you pull a good draft pick or free agent.
If your team misses the CL or is relegated, that is a whole new level of suffering that will be removed by a European Super League that will stagnate the sport and provide so much money to these clubs that even if they stay in the domestic leagues, it will ruin them further because they'll have even more funds to work with.
Also, we look forward to these mega match ups with the teams involved because they are not a weekly occurrence. Once they become a weekly occurrence, it will very much North Americanize the game.
I hope it fails
