The European Super League Megathread
http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/world-super-league-clubs-europe-8795828
It's speculated that when EPL TV deal ends, we could see top epl clubs, European clubs, MLS teams, Chinese and even Arab clubs form a world championship in club football of sorts in what is essentially an expanded champions league format.
Discuss.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
Not down for a world super league.
This is just expanding the Club World Cup at the expense of the CL and the Libertadores, which are great.
Whats the point of sacrificing proper CL games for this?
I'd rather watch Schalke-Sevilla or Porto-Ajax than LA Galaxy vs Guangzhu any day.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
In that article it says Juventus, Bayern and Madrid are the driving forces behind creating this format in including Asian and American teams.
Seems I misread it. They want an expanded CL of sorts rather than having both comps together. If this were to happen, will the CL cease to exist then?

Yes, thats what the article says. But the article actually doesn't cite anything. Its just the mirror saying that "its understood..."
Most talk before was about a European super league, that I find more believable.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
Five English clubs are among 11 so-called “founding members” in a proposal for a European Super League to start in 2021, according to documents released by Der Spiegel on Friday.
The German magazine – as part of the latest Football Leaks revelations – claims Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City are among the clubs who have been in negotiations about a new competition to replace the Champions League in three years’ time.
A draft of a “binding term sheet” sent on 22 October 2018 by the firm Key Capital Partners to Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Pérez, appears to show the English clubs would be joined by Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Milan as founding members with a further five clubs – Atlético Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Marseille, Internazionale and Roma – appearing as “initial guests”.
According to Der Spiegel, the 11 founding teams could not be relegated and would be part of the league for the first 20 years. The date by which the 16 clubs are to sign the “binding term sheet” is listed as November 2018.
When contacted by journalists working on the leaks, Real Madrid and Key Capital Partners declined to comment on the document.
Bayern, when asked for a comment, said the club was aware of “neither the existence nor the content” of the draft of the “binding term sheet.” Furthermore, he added, Bayern “as a matter of policy, does not comment on confidential discussions”.
The 11 founding clubs, according to the document, would register a company in Spain to market, organise and execute the European Super League under its full control. The competition would have a group stage and a knockout round. There is also a suggestion that a second league under the European Super League could be created.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
I imagine teams that are prone to being relegated and replaced by others.
But then the entire idea seems shit and i'd be surprised if it goes through.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
This sounds like either a logistical fetish for the numbers people or a nightmare, especially considering travel around larger countries like US, Canada, China, Russia, etc.
I won't lie though, I like the idea of seeing MLS teams compete in competitive games against top talent. This is the best way to get better as a league.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
I’m not really opposed to it. It sounds very similar to the concept of Nations Cup, in which the very best play against each other, all through the tournament. And the reality is in CL play, it is almost always these 16 clubs that are left once they get to quarter finals, so the only change is easy games are removed from group play. And as Nick suggested, they get to keep the money that they generate.
The original concept was for these 16 teams play a league and abandon their countries putting the lower levels at risk! But this renewed effort will be in place of CL (and perhaps eventually EL as well) which not only works well in also keeps UEFA and FIFA out of picture to a certain degree.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
Hope it materializes and not because of my own teams precarious situation. Tired of seeing the Young Boys, and Serbian farmhands playing in the CL. They're just there to make up the numbers and would lose to the top 10 in most major leagues.
Need to be more selective. Let those minor European champs have the Europa League.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
GFFN Also reporting that clubs and specially Milan CEO Gazidis is pushing this on because they want to hold UEFA to ransom so that they can make some changes to the CL rules to benefit bigger leagues. Specifically increasing CL spots.
I do like that tbh. No idea why a league such as PL shouldn't get 6-7 CL spots.

Re: The European Super League Megathread
Italy, Spain, England, Germany, France
should all get 6 spots tbh guaranteed
its disgraceful that there is more quality in the second tier of english football than some of the teams that make it into CL

Re: The European Super League Megathread
Seriously though, speaking just for the PL, if we have 6 spots wouldn't that kinda kill the excitement?
I mean the same 6 teams will 100% finish top 6 year in year out.
