FourFourTwo are Anglo-centric and I hardly ever care about what they say, but it should not deter from the fact that Varane and Modrić are the biggest frauds of this year's awards.

Both are in the nominations because France and Croatia did well in WC as well as Real Madrid in CL. Which is contrary to individual awards. Even if for the argument's sake we assume that that team glory is relevant, how instrumental were these two players in their teams' success?

To start with Varane, he had a pretty poor year compared to the previous years at Madrid. I can argue that he played a more clinical role in 2016 and 2017 where in in 2018 he made more mistakes than ever and his play wasn't very tidy nor focused. He is undoubtedly France's best CB at the moment but playing CB in a defensive minded team isn't particularly difficult nor it means that his team mates were inferior to him. Why not Mbappé, Pavard or Kante? And is that Van Dijk's fault that Netherlands weren't in the WC?

Regarding Modrić, he did have a good CL, although you can't argue that Ronaldo was not the unprecedented main star in the build up to the final. At WC he wasn't even Croatia's most instrumental player. Rakitić and even Rebić were more involved than Luka, not to mention Modrić missed a penalty that could have lead to Croatia's early exit against Denmark. Don't get me wrong, I am in no way, shape or form saying Rebić is a more talented footballer than Modrić, but he was more instrumental in Croatia's road to the final.
