I have said this for many years now. DD is a crap manager. His tactics didnt take france to the final.

Portugal showed great team spirit. True definition of a gritty performance. Pepe was a monster but entire back 4 played well. Thought Carvalho did really well too.

This was a bit like greece in 2004 but with added flair.

I regret that Eusebio couldn't watch this.
I remind him after Portugual - Greece. He was devastated at the stadium after that incredible loss , the massive disappointment for Portoguese football.

a good shot from eder, sometimes you just say *bleep* it and blast it. portugal played a disciplined game. still could have gone either way, don't think deschamps messed up. agreed with real gunner, it was a bit similar to greece in 04 in terms of the play on the pitch (and obviously the home team losing in the finals)

lol when you win, nobody cares about the journey. the journey only becomes a bone of contention when people want to rewrite history, or change the story to either overrate their favorite player or underrate a player they don't like

Well, its not their fault they didnt get to face a legit team until the final is it ?
Their display in the group stages were pathetic, thats there. But ever since they got out of it, they started showing fantastic grit and character to grind out results. Sometimes you just that sort of thingy to be champions.

Looking back at it now , the signs of a good team were there from the beginning .
A smart and adaptive coach , a rock solid defense , a well ballanced and compact midfield that was at ease in both possession and behind the ball ...

People were more preoccupied with bashing them for their first round performances (as if teams didn't go on to win tournaments after 3 draws in the first round) and with this " winning in 90 minutes " nonsense instead of picking up on this team's qualities .

I don't think criticizing them for finishing third in "the group of life" as someone put it is particularly harsh. They were awful in the group stage and if the format hadn't been changed they wouldn't even have made it out. After that they still weren't good but they managed to at least scrape the results out against poor opposition. Tonight finally they were fantastic and the better team.

Actual bottom line.

Portugal grew into the tournament. Every games you could see the improvement. They gelled throughout the tournament and showed something some teams missed, desire and will.

I think the way they naturalized Croatia , marked Rakitic and Modric out of the game , and reduced them to 0 shots on targets wasn't given its proper due .
Despite the Germany win , i still wasn't sure about the Pogba-Matuidi double pivot and wasn't surprised when Portugal handled it with relative ease .

He showed so much grace in defeat, and even though he must be really disappointed his country didn't win, he took the time to come down here and congratulate Portugal without trying to come up with excuses as to why they lost and he didn't try to belittle Portugal's achievement.

You may have lost tonight but you sure as hell have the character of a winner.

Portugal are just a hard team to beat. They beat you down with their rock solid defense. Really impressed with Gurreiro, Pepe and Rui Patricio this tournament.

Defense wins championships. Portugal are another proof of that.

Deschamps is an idiot for sure. Using Pogba as a holder and letting Matuidi run with the ball :facepalm:

I've never seen such ineptness before. Needed a goal and directness to break a compact defence, brings on Gignac.

I must say I had the same feeling I had with Portugal as I did with Greece in 04, Chelsea in 12 and Madrid this season. It just felt like destiny. Another great squad ruined by inept tactical decisions.

That's when his horrible team selection comes to bite him in the ass .

Why take both Giroud and Gignac ? how about a Gameiro or Lacazette to bring something different than whan Giroud offers ? why pick two inexperienced kids like Martial and Coman and leave Ben Arfa in the form of his life at home ?

If only Benzema and Lacazette were called up, and ofcourse Ben Arfa at the right wing instead of Sissoko. And why was Kante dropped out of the team?
