Copa América 2016 USA - Final - Chile vs Argentina

I feel hella bad for Messi.

Losing on penalties hurts more than losing by 3 or 4 goals because you feel you're so close, yet so far. And whoever misses their penalty isn't going to sleep well at night.

This feels like Bad Boy Pistons against Jordan before he was able to conquer them.

To be fair Messi has just come up against a superior side in south America in chile. No shame in that.

Nobody thinks any less of Zico for not doing anything of with Brazil in the 80's. Other sides were just better. This Chile is just better.

Argentina is one of the most passionate NT's in the game. I feel sorry for them as an NT. Its not about Messi. Its Argentina coming so close yet so far. This sport is not about individuals. But football unfortunately has become such a fanboy thing that people feel the need to make this more about Messi than them as a nation.

Hasn't Argentina won more Copa Americas than any other nation?

Ask Argentinians if they are more bothered about Argentina winning it or Messi winning it. When's the last time Argentina won something of some importance btw? Im asking seriously because i don't know.

Curious to hear Alex's thoughts.

Personally think Messi had an outstanding tournament and an outstanding game and was MOTM up until the shoot out. I don't think he's weak mentally tbh, he's come clutch many times before. He's just a bad penalty taker. I dont think that should define his performance but he must take some of the blame.

Regardless I think it's stupid to put too much emphasis on this tournament. With or without it he is one of the best players in history and IMO the best ever.

Olympics is a glorified U-23 tournament. It doesn't have the same level of competitivity as Copa. Besides quoting population figures to suggest a country isnt doing well doesn't make sense to me. It just doesn't work that way. Its like you expect them to win in every tournament they participate in which is virtually impossible.

Their most recent cup victory was in 2007 meanwhile Argentina haven't won anything relevant in 23 yrs. This generation is better than Brazil and they should have been winning something.

This generation is better than Brazil is a true statement, and has been proven by Argentina making the finals the past two years while Brazil have got their collective asses kicked by worse sides. The fact of the matter is the Brazil that won 9 years ago is nowhere near the same team that plays today.

The Argentina that won in the olympics is, for the most part, the guys who start for them now. The only remaining factor is neither one of them are winning copas or cups. Unless you count the confederation cup as serious.
