He was undoubtedly one of the top most reliable freekick takers in the world, up until 2011. Since then, I don't think I've witnessed a less reliable freekick taker.

It makes sense that his free kick scoring rate would take a dip after his doctor told him to stop doing the knuckle shots that he'd been doing for years, but his atrocious statistics since then only tells me that he never possessed the ability to adapt to a different shooting style.

Not just his doctors. A lot of his coaches throughout the years have been telling him to change his freekick style as he will have a lot of problems later on.

I read about it, several years ago. The knuckle shot technique required him to shoot the ball with great force, while twisting his ankle in a certain way, just before the ball left his foot. The technique and force put behind the shot, caused the ball to swerve in the air and become unpredictable for goalkeepers. Apparently, it strained his ankle over time and it could potentially cause permanent ligament damage if he had kept doing it.
