Also gotta love a post complaining about feminism in film that ends up with complimenting a woman on her ass, seems almost satirical.

For me, Set it Off is still the ultimate female-led heist film.

Queen Latifah was amazing in that. The first movie she did that I really believed her acting hype. Pretty underrated crime drama in general.

Think I'll watch it again sometime this weekend.

1) I'm not complaining about the all female cast--like I said, that's not the problem I have with it. I'm not sure how you got that out of my post. It's more to do with Hollywood being lazy and setting up these women to fail rather than giving them a blank slate to work with and letting these talented actresses do their thing. We've seen what Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock are capable of, why reboot them? Give them their own movie.

2) My point about feminism again, was not because I am against the idea of a movie with an all female cast. I think it's great. I think we need more diversity in all aspects of film (racial and gender). My point is that to the world it LOOKS like such a feminism money grab. And a lot of people will respond to it as such. Like some executive said "hey guys, women are 50% of the population, and feminism is as hot button a topic right now as anything. People want more female lead roles. What's that wildly successful movie with an all male cast? Ocean's eleven? Alright, just make them females and we're good to go."

And please, anything with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett in it doesn't need Oceans in its name for people to want to see it.

Again, if you read my post, I'm kinda surprised you thought I was complaining about feminism. I'm mostly complaining about Hollywood laziness and how I think it's setting up these women for less than what they deserve/can achieve.

Hollywood isn't lazy. People don't pay to watch original movies not made by Nolan. Care Blanchett doesn't pull in a crowd and neither does Bullock anymore.
I don't think even prime Bullock could draw in enough people to make this kind of ensemble movie a success.

Just look at The Nice Guys. No one went out to see it at all. Superhero movies and tv shows are the thing people pay to watch. Not original movies.

10 cloverfield Lane is by any means an original film. It is completely original. It had a name tagged on to get distribution basically. That's how movies can break even in these times.

Carol (Cate Blanchett + Rooney Mara), Blue Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) both grossed very well against their budget. Gravity (Sandra Bullock)...insanely out grossed its budget.

These are all movies from the last three years, lead by Blanchett or Bullock. All of them are very good.

Make a good movie with Bullock and Blanchett and people will go see it.

None of those Blanchett movies earned enough to warrant her bringing in the crowd. An ensemble movie that involves a heist will probably have to earn around a 300-400 million to break even. Also would think Truth would've earned more than 2m$ if Blanchett was that big of a star.

It's not lazy, it's a safe choice. Original movies don't make their budget back like they used to. Also you mention Carol and Blue Jasmine, academy award nominated movies one of which led by Woody Allen. I really wouldn't call Blanchett a draw at all. Her being the best actress of all time is another case, but it doesn't draw in a crowd much like DDL doesn't draw in a crowd.

They can't rely on making an academy award level movie when they have to use 150m$+ in budget and marketing when the tendency is that you lose money on original movies that aren't horror.

Then the gambles on Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect weren't worth it? Original movies with ensemble casts that did well enough to warrant sequels, all within the last couple years as well. Meanwhile, sticking the tag of Ghostbusters on this most recent film did...well very little to help. To me, a big part of it was how incredibly shot down the entire thing was before it even released.

Call it safe, what I just want is for these studios to not create crap and then put it out there with a big name and call it a day. To me, it's lazy.

I hope it does well (I'm 100% in love with Blanchett), and I hope we can see more female leads. More than anything, I hope it's a good movie.

What I hope is that people aren't using the name alone as an excuse to create average movies. That's why I wish for an original movie, and I think there are merits to it being original. I do think it can succeed without being attached to Oceans. If you believe differently that's fair, I'll admit you know far more about film than I do.

Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids were both low budgets movies. I can't see how you can make a heist film with huge leads for anything less than 100m$.

Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect would struggle to break even with the that budget. It's really cherry picking. I really don't see the problem at all with making a female Ocean's sequel.

Agree with what exactly? McAgger did you pay to watch The Nice Guys recently?

When was the last time any of you watched an original movie in the cinema?

You guys are really disagreeing with my point that original blockbusters are failing? I would love to get some actual facts here. CB used an example of Cate Blachett being able to carry a blockbuster film by starring in a movie that made 39m$.

There's being made more original movies now than there's ever been. But no one watches them. I work at an independent cinema and we barely get a huge crowd for any movies. Original movies have a hard time making money because of the cost of movies now.

Franchises need properties because it's easier to market when there's an existing fanbases who will freely promote the movie. Marketing for movies are at least 30m$. Not a lot of original movies can afford that and they suffer.

I'd love for there to be more chances. Hell my three favorite movies this year are original. But they didn't make a lot of money.

Damien Walters has amazing stunts. He was great in Kick-Ass and Kingsman. Movie will look great. Story is the only question. I'd think the acting ought to be on point with that cast.

Story will certainly be the question mark. I don't have high hopes for that, but the talent on offer should absolutely carry this movie to success though.

This could very likely be the first critically successful adaption of a video game. Got a real shot at that if the story holds up.

Post by Vlad the Impaler Mon Aug 15, 2016 12:16 am

Dear friends,

I kindly ask you to help me find a few good movies to watch that I didn't see so far. Tomorrow I'll be going on a trip into the mountains near my native town and after 8 hours of hiking and other stuff, I will probably want to watch a movie with the friend with whom I'll go.

If you choose to help me, I suggest we do things in an efficient way. I'll give you the link with a list of movies that I've seen so far and if you have an idea, you can check the list first to see if that movie is there. If it isn't there, you can write it here.

Why am I seeking your help?

Simply because it's very late here in Romania and I can only afford to stay a few minutes more in order to put my internet connection at work for the rest of the night and download those movies. Also, I trust you guys a lot. I'll be back after I finish my tea.

Hopefully, I will get some suggestions in good time!

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I just realized that I didn't add EuroTrip into my list. I've seen it when I was in High-School.

I am pretty sure that The Sixth Sense is in the list.

I look forward for watching Deadpool, the only problem is that there is a big chance that my friend watched it. Same thing with the 5th element.

Escape from Alcatraz and IP Man seem to be the only options which I could consider.

Can you recommend me some movies which resemble the style adopted by these: Wild, Seven Years in Tibet, I'm Not There? Biographies maybe?

Yeah, 541 movies in my list. I think that's enough to make me a movie addict considering that I am only 21 years old, right? If I start counting from 1 to 541, when I reach 30, I realize how many movies I've seen so far. Rolling Eyes

If you look at the number, you'd probably be surprised to hear that I didn't see many of the mainstream box office movies from the last 2 years.

I've watched 1868 movies from what I can gather. If you want to make lists I'd recommend using Letterboxd instead of IMDb. Much easier to use for that purpose.
