Portuguese and Spanish FAs meet to discuss creation of Iberian Cup

Love the idea, but they need to get rid of the King's Cup if this is the case. 3 local competitions is simply too much.

Probably a cup, I can't imagine Portugal or La Liga would be willing to lose CL spots as part of a combined league.

Cup would be quite interesting.
Porto, Benfica, Madrid, barca, Atleti, Sporting can all have great matches against each other.
but in the article it says it's a league

Re: Portuguese and Spanish FAs meet to discuss creation of Iberian Cup
It will probably end up being a third tier competition like the League cup in France and England .

Just merge both leagues. Barca, Real, Atletico, Valencia, Sevilla, Villarreal, Athletic Bilbao, Porto, Benfica. BAH gawd, best league of all times. Like La Liga but with another 2 great teams.

You forgot sporting you pos .

The league should get 7 CL spots then , otherwise it wont be worth it for the portuguese teams and whoever they might end up replacing in the spanish top 4

Quite sure the likes of Sevilla, Villarreal, Bilbao and Valencia will benefit more from the 7 CL spots than 95% of the portugese sides

Every team in La Liga should enter the Champions League tbh. It's a league full of champions. (:

I remind when MVB promoted to join Eredivise and Belgian league
Anyway it 'd be a cup used from big teams to put the 3rd team , so it's useless thing.

Re: Portuguese and Spanish FAs meet to discuss creation of Iberian Cup
Just make CDR and Supercup one legged, and there's 5 matches for the competition, which should be enough.BarrileteCosmico wrote:http://readlaliga.com/2015/11/18/portugal-spain-discuss-creation-iberian-league/

I'd be cool if they scrapped the respective league cups and combined them, so both leagues played in their respective league, Europe and this combined cup
Then instead of having the league cup and league winner face off at the start of the season, you could have the combined league cup winner and the two league winners face off in a three way comp over multiple games
(probably best as a pre-season thing)

Re: Portuguese and Spanish FAs meet to discuss creation of Iberian Cup
it will be crap..why? teams will play their best players in the ucl and the league, and that's something sponsors will take note of thus preventing major investments. if this was in the di stefano era it would make a bit of sense, considering the historical teams and players involved. but now that we're all complaining about fifa viruses, i personally i'm complaining about crap cups like the super cups and world club cups, players are wary about their health and fitness, this doesn't make any sense.
only way this goes, is if big teams refrain from participating and it becomes sort of an iberian cup winners cup type of competition. and even then, the lack of sponsors and interests will see it die out. it will be a waste of funds and resources

They should abolish their respective Cups and go with a unified one. Also, UEFA should award both the Champion and Runner-up a place in the EL group stage since both the Spanish and Portuguese Cup winners get that.

I see they are already planning ahead for catalan independence. Great idea, I fully support it (though I would prefer Barça moving to another league).

Re: Portuguese and Spanish FAs meet to discuss creation of Iberian Cup
abolishing the cup does little to help smaller sides within a football's association. if one abolishes the cup and goes for an iberian competition, it hurts the second division teams within both countries that will probably not qualify for the iberian games and now have lost out on playing in the domestic cup competitions. granted the segunda teams hardly ever do well in the cup these days, but it affords them some exposure, little money and win, lose or draw, they're always excited to play against the big teams away from home
with the iberian tournament, you'll also have to asses the calendar. they're not getting saturdays and sundays cos of league games. tuesday and wednesday is ucl, and europa on thursdays. factor in domestic cup games, and you'll be either be running players to the ground with fatigue and inuries cos they still have to train OR the competition will turn into a farce with everyone playing their castilla or junior sides and thus not attracting strong enough sponsors
not to mention, the travel involved. yes, they're neighboring countries, and seville to lisbon is closer than say seville to barcelona. but add the travel with domestic games, european games, and cup games, burning extra miles for some tournament that isn't even uefa sanctioned is a waste of time

Re: Portuguese and Spanish FAs meet to discuss creation of Iberian Cup
by the way, even if by some miracle it becomes a huge deal with the stars of big teams dying to play in it, (which it won't) after looking at the difficulties in spain over the years agreeing to reasonable tv deals, and the fact that portuguese clubs also have their quarrels with the bigger sides over tv finances, what makes anyone think agreeing to distributions will be a glorious picnic for the countries involved?

Re: Portuguese and Spanish FAs meet to discuss creation of Iberian Cup
Sounds like too good of an idea to work out.
Even though I would love the two leagues to abolish it's cups and to form one unified one (or even just merge la Liga and Primeira Liga). It ain't gonna happen, unless say, Catalonia gains independence and brakes away to join Ligue 1. Only then could I see La Liga try to merge with Primeira Liga as a way to make the league more attractive after losing a powerhouse in FC Barcelona. But as mentioned, I just don't see Barca trying to brake away even if Catalonia does gain it's independence; they would likely just stay in La Liga the same way Monaco has stayed in Ligue 1.
