Re: Windows 10
Windows 10
It came through after lots of tinkering here and there, I had 3 options it came down to.
1) Find a way to activate my windows 8 after this whole time
2) Find a product key somewhere to finish the windows 10 installation.
3) If 1 & 2 don't work, then download the ting on a USB and boot my PC from the start wit da ting.
Being the absolute legend that I am, I worked out BOTH 1 and 2 within a minute, so there yeah I FINALLY activated my windows 8, but a minute later I was upgrading to windows 10 because I found a key somewhere online. Thank you for all those beautiful people over the internet who share

Re: Windows 10
Upgraded to it a couple of days ago. Wasn't impressed at all. For one thing, the damn audio didn't allow any sound from the speakers, only way to hear anything was through headphones. Came to find out this was a common bug that many users encountered on Windows 10.
I've gone back to Windows 7.

Only problem I have is everything keeps freezing every so often and the only way to fix it is restarting.

Re: Windows 10
Yeah that really shouldn't happen software-wise, if your PC really freezes so you can't do shit but restart, I'd be 99% certain you've got a hardware issue.
Though I do have a bite more blue screens than I had with Win7, but, same as with Win7, this usually just means killing a few applications in the task manager and that's it.
The only crash I've had yet coincided with my 5 year old SSD dying.

Re: Windows 10
Yeh it only started happening once I installed Win 10, but then again at the same time I also installed a new hard drive.
Basically from time to time when it's idle and I return to move the cursor, it doesn't move, everything's froze and I have to restart.

Same with me. It gets stuck at 76% each time and I nearly ruined my laptop with repeated attempts at reinstalling. *sigh*

Re: Windows 10
I solved my problem and just ordered a new laptop with windows 10 already on it
but really the screen on my current laptop has cracked at the hinge and is falling off and that's why I ordred the new laptop, windows 10 is just a added bonus
6th Gen i7 processor
16 GB DDR3 ram
1TB HDD +128 SSD
Nvidia GTX 960M 4GB GDDR5
15.6" 4K screen
Windows 10
good way to spend $1800

Re: Windows 10
Can mention the specific processor? Because
16GB DDR4
1TB HDD +128 SSD
GeForce GTX 970M
15.6" 1080p IPS G-SYNC Display (+$120 for 4k)
adds up to $1599 for me... with a 970M instead of a 960M and the difference between the two isn't small at that.
Heck I can configure a 980M based laptop for $1,844...
Somewhere you're getting shafted....

Oh that clears things up a bit; I wanted to know who the F was daring to charge US$1800 for a 960M based laptop. That's almost Apple levels of overpricing.

ya lol i pretty much just use my laptop for internet browsing and watching movies so extreme performance isn't necessary but I wanted something that was future proof for a few years.

6 months down the line and it looks like my SSHD has failed me. Everything froze, restarted and got a message saying 'reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device'. Checked the bios and it can't detect the drive. Tried it in another machine and it wasn't detected either. Also tried another drive in the affected machine and the bios picked it up. Hopefully I can retrieve the data from it using a HD enclosure. Otherwise going try the freezer method, where you let it sit in a freezer for a while and the drive apparently works for a short amount of time once it's out.

Re: Windows 10
Update from me:
I was one of the early adopters - at least, I thought I would be before my laptop crashed 4 times through the upgrade process.
I was super pissed off and rolled back to 8.1 and ditched any inclination to upgrade it.
Last week, I got a university license for 10 Edu and decided that Microsoft might actually have gotten their heads out of their arses and sorted things out in the last 8 months or so.
BIG MISTAKE. Ended up crashing my laptop completely again, and currently my laptop is on its way to the Dell service center in the Netherlands or something. Yay!
Easter holidays are the last chance saloon. If it still doesn't work, I am planning to stick with 8.1 for a few more months and then switch to a Macbook or something next summer.
That would roughly coincide with me buying my first iPhone too, since I am increasingly pissed off with the bloatware on my Android phone and tablet. Expect my Nexus 10 and One M8 to breathe their last sometime next summer.
Comments/thoughts?

Did you ever find out what caused the crashes in the event viewer? Have you tried a clean Win 10 install?

Re: Windows 10
Not very tech savvy - used to be when I was still in college.
The guys over at the service center will only do a factory reset - so I will get it back with Win 8, which was on the laptop when I purchased it in late 2013. I still have to figure out how to get Win 10 to work on it, once I get it back.
I currently have the installation files on a USB, with a product key from my university. The univ tech support only said I should run setup.exe from the USB and that should take care of everything.
Will doing this on a factory reset-ed PC be equivalent to a clean install? How does that work?
Thanks for the tips!

Re: Windows 10
University "Tech support" told you to run setup.exe smh
Clean install means installing unto an unformatted hard drive. Do you know how to burn an ISO to DVD ? Do you happen to know the make and model of your laptop? (does it have a DVD/BR drive? - otherwise you might need to make a bootable USB - slightly more involved process)

Re: Windows 10
Well it's not that bad actually. The guys at tech support might well be knowledgable, but I was refering to the installation instructions on the IT/Software webpage of the university. I am enrolled at a univ in Switzerland and only there 3-4 days a semester, so I can't really wait on the Techies there to sort me out.
I have an Inspiron 7537. It doesn't have a DVD/BR drive, so I have to do it through a USB.
The installation files I got from the univ downloads page was an ISO. So I unpacked (right term?) it into a USB, and ran the setup.exe from that. That's what the installation instructions from the university said.

Re: Windows 10
Seem to be having lag spikes on Win 10 every so often. Disk usage goes up to 100% for 2 mins and everything freezes. The process that shoots up is usually system and compressed memory.

Didn't happen on Win 7 on the same HDD, but yeh, I've got a feeling there's something up with the drive.
I've cancelled stuff like superfetch etc in the registry, changed power solutions etc etc.

Re: Windows 10
It's not just you.. I wrote earlier about how I upgraded to Windows 10 twice and it was super laggy the first time so I went back to 8.1, and the second upgrade it crashed my laptop...
Well I gave it another shot last month (don't ask me why).. It was running great and then a few days ago I was just watching a random video on a website and my laptop froze and wouldn't start up on restart.. I thought I would lose everything again but found a way to just delete everything other than my personal files and start Win 10 fresh..
I wanted to just go back to factory settings (Win 8.0) and then go back up to 8.1 and stay there, but the restore file wasn't there anymore so I'm stuck with 10 for now
I don't know what the *bleep* is going on and why it happens when I upgrade to Windows 10.. My laptop is only 2 years old and the specs are great so it's not that
P.S. I know others who had similar issues with it

Re: Windows 10
*bleep* windows 10 updates.
Tried to ruin my PC twice before but succeeded this time. The last updated corrupted my entire windows. Can't even load it anymore. Tried restoring and going back to previous build but no luck
Currently on Ubuntu.
Only option is to save the files from here and then reinstall windows.
Disgusting
