Germany World Cup 2011 (notable superstars: Angerer, Garefrekes, Grings)
(Heck, we were defending World Champions and serial European Champions, too! And it was the World Cup at home!)

You missed that France 02 had also Zidane playing when they lost the crucial game in the groups.
Most embarrassing is holding champion to get eliminated in groups.
1. France 02
2. Spain 14
3. Italy 10

I would say France 2008 euros. I supported them that tournament and expected more.
Also anything 2004 and before, I don't know much about so probably I can't give the most concrete answer.
Also, Spain 14 one wasn't that disappointing because many people suspected their troubles and some even predicted they wouldn;t make it passed the group stage.

i agree on this
holding champion should at least lose in the knockout stage, not to be called embarrassing

Zidane wasn't fit in the final group game in 02

Funnily in 2006 France tied two games with Zidane in groups and won the crucial game without him. One of the overrated players in recent memory.

Funny that France struggled to qualify for the 06 WC without him. He had saved their ass in the final game and then went on to dominate that competition

Golden Ball-performance's Zidane 06 is easily the least impressive:Valkyrja wrote:Harmonica wrote:Funnily in 2006 France tied two games with Zidane in groups and won the crucial game without him. One of the overrated players in recent memory.

- He coasted group phase, France tied twice with him and won crucially without him.
- Excluding the penalties he didn't create, scored only one goal from open play when the game was almost done an dusted.
- For a playmaker didn't create as much, only registered 12 chances created which is a lot less than other playmakers Cruyff 74 (36), Pele 70 (28), Maradona 86 (27), Messi 14 (23). Again watching the games confirm what statistics already pointed.
- The red card incident just about is the cherry on a hype crusted and half hollow cake.

i'd say he fixed all that by performing better in the next round.....i'd consider it worse if he destroyed the togos, switzerlands and north koreas of this world, only to get handled by spain or brazil

Re: which one was the most embarrassing elimination for the big team at the early stage?
france in 02 was the most embarrasing, maybe spain in 2014 as second. people who say italy 10, are basing it on hindsight and the fact they were defending champions. but if you were watching the world cup at the time, nobody was scared of italy, that team that was selected couldn't cut their way out of a wet paper bag with scissors in their hands. and cannavaro going to that tournament? he was already quite garbage at madrid like 2 years before
france had the best player in the world at the time, on the back of his volley in the ucl final, granted he didn't play the first two games due to injury and was unfit for the third. but they had the top scorer in the epl that season, henry; top scorer in serie a that season, trezeguet, and top scorer in ligue un cisse, on the bench. as well as stellar midfielders and defense. there was no excuse for not getting out of the first round...oh like spain they too had come off the back of world and euro success.
i'm still not sure about spain on this though, but i'll put em second. all that hold the ball for 89 minutes had gone too far, and they had no david villa....costa was only just getting used to them

Re: which one was the most embarrassing elimination for the big team at the early stage?
Tbh I didn't expect anything from Spain 14 either, you could see from Barcelona's perspective that possession system edge had already disappeared that they enjoyed in 10-12. But France 02 not scoring a goal with those players is something else.

Germany won the WC 2003 and 2007, and all (!) the Euros between 1995 and 2013, so it was considered almost a given that we would win the 2011 World Cup which was held in Germany, too. It was a major shock that Germany were defeated by Japan in the quarter finals, I can tell you!

Argentina 2002 was the most shocking for me , probably it was the best team on paper with great players in their prime .
I 'd say never Italy, after that calls was expected
