RedOranje wrote:They're certainly doing a great job of building up hype and interest for Jurassic World and so far it looks as though it will be a well crafted and successful film. HOWEVER, I have to say that the recent trailers have left me a bit wary, if only for my own personal taste with regards to the film. While Jurassic World will, I think, absolutely succeed as financially and critically, I suspect it may fail in carrying on/reviving the spirit of the first movie as I was rather hoping for. Part of the lasting success and impact of Jurassic Park is the depiction of the dinosaurs as a part and force of nature. The Tyrannosaurs isn't a typical scheming villain; it's a primal, visceral force of nature. Instinct drives it in its implacable course, creating an antagonistic force that is pure and, for that, more lasting and impressive. The Velociraptors were all the more frightening because of their uniqueness and the surprising nature of their actions. They were, at least somewhat, believable as a primordial and natural existence and threat. Even their intelligence, such as it is, takes the more primal form of that of pack hunters with only twinges of something akin to humanity's.

I fear that in their continued effort to raise the stakes, the creators of Jurassic World have lost this particular aspect of the original film and that JW will be somewhat the lesser for it (if only in my experience). In attempting to make the dinosaurs more threatening and perhaps engaging, I fear they've overcomplicated things and missed a key part of the original film's atmosphere. Perhaps by trying to give the dinosaurs (particularly the Indominus Rex and Raptors) MORE character they've actually achieved the opposite by inadvertently removing the most compelling part of their presence. As such, while I'm quite confident that Jurassic World will be a better movie than The Lost World or JPIII, I don't think it will ultimately be any more successful in capturing that unique, lasting spirit of the original film.

tl;dr
Jurassic World will probably be a very successful, quite well made movie. However, it may not (for me personally, at least) succeed in being the true heir to Jurassic Park due to the way they handle the main predator/antagonist dinosaurs.

Well I don't think it is possible to reignite the same sort of feeling that people got from JP1 now since it's been such a long time. Agreed that the move will do well at every level because of the actors(mainly Chris Pratt) and purely because it's Jurassic Park. But it's very hard, not just for this franchise but any, to capture the same sort of uniqueness as the original film provided.

Don't let them fool you into thinking The Babadook is any good  FFS I was reasonably looking forward to get a good scare when I looked at that RT percentage and the hype it's been getting since its release.

This is what a fellow Letterboxd'er had to say about it rofl :
Rarely has a horror film had such rave reviews as The Babadook. I had expected to shit my pants during this evenings viewing, but as a bloke that scares easily and isn't a fan of the genre, I found this hugely disappointing. The premise, the set-up, the annoying little twat of a kid all prepared us for something that would genuinely bring the chills, but this just never got going.
William Friedkin, the director of The Exorcist stated last Summer that he thought The Babadook was the most terrifying film he'd ever seen, and coming from the man who delivered that seventies classic, the expectation levels for this were enormous. Well I'm sorry Bill, but little Regan spider-walking and her nightmarish encounter with true evil made The Babadook look about as scary as an episode of the Teletubbies. Jennifer Kent's lo-fi approach did help create a creepy, sinister atmosphere, but it was slow-paced and pedestrian before failing to deliver the predicted frights. The kid got right on my tits early on and at one point I even considered killing him myself. I kept waiting for something to happen, something to make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, but aside from one or two moments I was almost bored. Again I'm not the target audience here as horror films psychological or not aren't my thing, but my wife is and she thought it was a real letdown.
http://letterboxd.com/ddarko42/film/the-babadook/

He obviously exaggerated with some points, but seriously what a effing let down! They sold me a horror, and then I get an underlying psychological drama that is covered with past horror film rip-offs. Even the psychological drive aspect isn't a new technique in the horror genre. Maybe you should go in and watch it from a psychological drama's point of view as you'll easily see what its all about, but still even then I don't think it will be that good. Don't hide underlying tones and messages under cheap rip-offs, just make a drama film with underlying tones and messages then.

It is a horror film by all means. And I loved every single bit of it. Greatest horror film in years.

This again with diminishing other people's taste. Not exactly a charming go-to move in film discussion.

well shiiiiiiiiiiiiit Laughing

And to make matters worse...
At a time when the box office is dominated by popcorn pics, the failure of “Child 44″ is a perfect example of the challenges facing movies geared toward adult audiences.

The moody thriller about the search for a serial killer in Soviet Russia earned a paltry $600,000 domestically in its opening weekend and a meager $2.1 million internationally. That does not bode well for a film that cost nearly $50 million to produce.

A movie that offers up plenty of Russian accents, pre-Perestroika official corruption and a high preteen body count is a difficult sell in any circumstances, but in this case, nothing seemed to break “Child 44’s” way.

“When you’re spending $50 million on an adult drama, you have to be sure you have the right pieces in place to pull it off,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “In this day and age, if it’s not produced by Steven Spielberg or directed by Angelina Jolie, it’s not going to make it. It’s just going to look like the kind of thing you see in Redbox that never made it to theaters.”

You can't really "piss golden yellow on Sharknado" when that movie is 100% what it intends to be and nothing more.

Jaws is a better movie than Sharknado. Whilst Sharknado was a successful movie at the box-office, it is hardly ambitious in what it set out to achieve in terms of film-making.

The people behind Sharknado set out to make a movie with a premise so ridiculous that it's funny. This isn't strictly satire, it's "camp". The difference between Sharknado and Jaws is that Sharknado has only that "camp" card to play - if that's not enough to hold your attention, give it a miss. Conversely, Spielberg clearly aimed and succeeded in making a much more complete movie out of similar subject matter with Jaws.

Its wikipedia page tags it as a satire, heard other people tag it as that as well.

Satire is a comedic form of critique used to improve society, indicuals etc. I fail to see how Sharknado does that.
A great example of a satire is the work of Sacha Baron Cohen, where he shows something that's wrong with the world in a comedic and ridiculous way in order to improve it.
