Re: UK 2015 Elections
That shity "mockumentary" might as well have had UKIP supporters wear white robes with pointy hats throwing rocks at black people, that's the message C4 wanted to get across. Total inane dribble that was a smear campaign dressed up as faux fact.
How this sort of crap could be broadcast three months before a general election is beyond me

Should do one for the Green Party, where the government funds trips for people to go away to join ISIS, while they plant trees everywhere

Or the Tories, where three kids in the entire country can afford to go away to Eton, while everyone else is forced to burn their life savings to stay warm in the winter

Re: UK 2015 Elections
Let's be fair here, UKIP has an inordinate number of very xenophobic and yes, racist members for its size and does very very little to actively distance itself from the rhetoric often used by those with such beliefs. Further, it eagerly allies itself with parties from other countries that share similar beliefs openly. There is absolutely a reason the party has the reputation it does.

Re: UK 2015 Elections
The biggest problem these right-wing parties in Europe seem to have is that they've gotten bigger, gained more seats in elections, too quickly. Although they enjoy much higher ratings now than some years back, they don't have enough skilled and credible politicians among their ranks.
Finland's version of UKIP is the True Finns party (I'm not sure if that the official translation). In the 2007 parliamentary elections they got 5 seats in our 200 seat parliament. In 2011 they got 39 seats.
That's just too sharp a rise, it seems, to have decent quality politicians in the party to fill those seats. So, you get all sorts of idiots elected from that party, who are pretty much capable of just chanting "tougher line on immigration, tougher line on immigration!" and every once in a while they say something racist or otherwise cringe-worthy stuff that gives the party a bad image.
That's the problem. And that makes voting them so difficult, too. Even if you feel they're right to call for tougher immigration policy and EU criticism, they lack such politicians who you would trust to be smart enough to lead the country. Yet there clearly is demand for their ideology.

Re: UK 2015 Elections
Well I can't speak for other parties across the world, but UKIP's manifesto includes more than just imposing a restriction on immigration and THAT'S the problem, that's ALL people focus on

Re: UK 2015 Elections
I believe the rise in right-wing groups across the globe is mostly due to the failure of left-wing, centralist parties to address key local & global issues. By addressing I don't even mean concrete actions. Most of the things they say are quite repetitive. Their failure to offer a vision in a changing political, social, economical, security landscape is being utilized by right-wing parties. The biggest problem these right-wing parties in Europe seem to have is that they've gotten bigger, gained more seats in elections, too quickly. Although they enjoy much higher ratings now than some years back, they don't have enough skilled and credible politicians among their ranks.
Since they (right-wing) are merely capitalizing on a vacuum; there's little interest (or even necessity) to strengthen their ranks with competent personnel.
This is my personal observation.

On topic: What is the shadow cabinet and what is its function in the UK government? (And why does it sound like an evil organization from a shonen manga?)

Re: UK 2015 Elections
It was announced today that UK's net migration had risen to 298 000 in the previous year. When the Tories came to power in 2010, Cameron had promised to cut it below 100 000
Migration is such a big issue nowadays that that surely means a defeat in the up coming elections for Cameron and the Conservative Party.

And that's still giving the anti-immigration crowd too much credit, in reality, they're usually much more incoherent than that.

Re: UK 2015 Elections
tbf you don't need mad literacy skills to claim benefits.
Although, it is/will be a problem in the UK. We're a small Island with problems already and there's just a ridiculous amount of people smuggling themselves in to our country via France to take advantage of our benefit system. Obviously from their point of view it's understandable but we nor any other country can be taking on so many people because their own country/government failed them miserably. Slowly but surely it just screws us up completely.
The only way to stop mass migration is to sort out the source countries so people don't have to flee from them (which won't happen obviously). The current powers failed miserably with their anti-immigration target and because it's almost the only thing people even discuss about politics half of the time nowadays I can see idiotic parties like UKIP doing very well, because people ignore their shitty policies and focus on TUKERJERBS herp derrr

Well this was fairly recent
Anyway, I'm not gonna condescend towards people who want to work but don't have the opportunity, particularly given the amount of people that don't want to work, when given the opportunity.

And people who don't want to work, when are given opportunity, are NOT always the immigrants.

Re: UK 2015 Elections
On the topic of immigration, I recently watched that hour speech made by former English Defence league leader "Tommy Robinson", to an audiance of Oxford university toffs. Having never taken much notice of the EDL I was surprised to say the least to find that this man appeared to be some sort of liberal cosmopolitan. He was like a version of Christopher Hitchens that came from a working class background and stopped schooling at GCSE level. Anyway, it was actually worth watching I thought if you have the time.

Re: UK 2015 Elections
There's a difference between anti-immigration and anti-illegal immigration, think we need to clear that point up. England has basically become the red carpet for anyone and everyone to just waltz in, legally or nae, and set up shop to claim money and contribute nothing. And if you try to remove them, they quote the Human Rights Act, verbatim. And we have one man to thank for that

Re: UK 2015 Elections
How is that even possible? To open a shop (or any kind of business for that matter) you need some permit etc. and that in turn requires some documents. Illegal immigrants don't have such documents and as a result will not be able to open business.Lex wrote:There's a difference between anti-immigration and anti-illegal immigration, think we need to clear that point up. Even in that scenario they're still contributing, they're providing jobs in that shop, they are purchasing things in their neighborhoods thus supporting the local economies, they pay taxes if they earn over a certain amount, they help the population growth, etc.
